I liked the Francois Louis Spectruoso the most out of all of these, especially in the higher notes. I also liked the JodyJazz Jet even though I don't like it as much on Alto or Tenor. I liked the smooth more mellow sound of the Selmer S80 which I think would be better for classical than the Vandoren Optimum which sounded too muted and mellow but I like the Optimum mouthpieces more on Alto though. I found the Aizen was a bit too warm for me and personally didn't like the tone you got, but I liked the smoothness of it. I also found for me, the Drake was a bit too bright and projecting. When you mentioned metal mouthpieces, could you do a metal mouthpiece comparison for alto?
Yeah - Everyone is looking for the Metal MPC reviews - Wow - as if I could keep up with it all ! Personally, unless I'm playing an outdoors or '80s rock gig, I leave my metal Berg Larson in the case. I love these richer Ebonite tones !! Thank you and all me Sax UK pals 'across the pond' for this intelligent post !
My thoughts exactly, Jim. Aizen is smooth as silk, excellent control. Otto Link, right in the middle of the spectrum, which is a safe bet. Vandoren Optimum sounded splendid.
Great video !! I like play yanagisawa bari sax with selmer S80. For me it's really good to play different style of music... what is the model pf your bari sax, please ? Thank you ❤
Yep. And you could totally get a classical tone out of it if you had to. The fact of the matter is, which is not something a UA-cam vid trying to sell mouthpieces would say, the versatility of a great mouthpiece is in the player.
I almost agree but I’m biased as I have all 3 except my V16 sounds like somebody has shoved 3 pairs of socks down the bell (a total waste of money). Still nothing beats my Runyon Quantum delrin. The Aizen was rather embarrassing,
A lot of these sounded muffled to me surprisingly. Itd be nice to have a comparison vs the Yamaha 5c stock "Old reliable". Its between the Drake and Otto for me
Interesting. My experiences with the Meyer and OL Tone Edge are exactly the other way around as your sound in this video. Thanks for the extensive comparison! The Vandoren V16 would be interesting to try as well.
I am currently playing a Francois Louis Spectruoso but a little bigger than the 120 opening here. I love the piece. I have so much control with it. I think mine is in the neighborhood of a 144 tip opening. Not sure I would find another piece with as much comfort and control as mine. However, if you have one, please let me know.
I would have ranked the V16 among the better sounding pieces. I really thought the Aizen was an odd choice as a favorite, because the intonation went a bit wonky on it. But I understand that feel and response influence a player's choices as well, so perhaps that was a factor. I agreed with Jim's assessment of the Selmer, which surprised me, and the Drake, which I really liked. The Optimum failed the test for me.
Mark DiSanto I’ve got both the B7 and the B9 in addition to most of the others Jim tested in this video. Both vandorens are great but I greatly prefer the B9 which is my favourite bari mouthpiece at the moment. Give the B9 a try, it’s great!
I play a Theo Wanne Durga 4 Hard Rubber 7* on my Baritonsax and find the reeds H 2 too soft. What can you recommend me ? Any speciel brand? Sincerely yours Ole Birger.
if you're living in Brazil, just contact Nelson at Borb Oliver Mouthpieces near Sao Paulo. vendas-bo@borboliver.com.br I bought a New York 6 from him and it's very nice, good quality, plays easy and good intonation on a Keilwerth. Mind you, not suitable on a Conn 12 M bari ..that instrument needs a extra large 'double' chamber. Borb's mpc is a medium chamber, Meyer like as you will have guessed.
Based solely on what I hear in this video: The Aizen LS seems to play way out of tune in the higher notes, to my ears. The Vandoren Optimum sounds very muted indeed. Francois Louis Spectruoso sounds great (like the winner) to me. (both in volume and tone over the whole register) But I will stick with my meyer I think.
How do you find the otto link tone edge ? Just bought one myself for my alto and I find that the quality of the finished product is worst than my selmer S80 ? Also read some things about new Links' inconsistency
@@jacobdeaven7477 Yup ! Struggle a lot to put the reed on it but my teacher did it today and plays fine What do you play now ? And did you ever own a vintage Link ? Heard they were more consistent back then !
If you like the Link, the Yanagisawa is very much like a Link, but with much better quality control. That said, my own modern Tone Edge Link is perfect. People tend to discount the Yanagisawas, but they are very good mouthpieces. Any of these need a little time to find which reed works best and might take a slightly different approach, too. For example, the V16 works great with a Vandoren Blue Box reed and can go bright or dark.
To me you pretty much sounded the same on all of them. A little brighter on the JJ Jet. I have found that you don't need to spend $350-$700 on a mouthpiece to sound good. I think that the mouthpiece makers' hype is often just that. A way to part a fool and his money.
Up to a point I agree. It's much more to do with the feel and ease of intonation when you blow through the mouthpiece/horn imo. But there are differences in sound; I dont think the mic picked them up very well.

thanks ! So useful , as I have this cranked up way LOUD trying to differentiate betwixt the tones ! :)

I thought the Spectruoso to be the most equal timbre, intonation up and down the horn.
Great topic! I am soon to add a baritone to my saxes. I appreciated the opportunity to hear a wide range of mouthpieces. Thanks!
My thoughts exactly, Jim. Aizen is smooth as silk, excellent control. Otto Link, right in the middle of the spectrum, which is a safe bet. Vandoren Optimum sounded splendid.
Are you going to do a metal showdown?
I liked the Francois Louis.

Drake Crossover mouth piece was 💕💕💕💕💕

Really enjoyed the Drake, Jody JET, and V16. Thank you!

Your guys should definitely do a metal mouthpiece showdown! it would help me a lot!
also... where's Scott been?
The thumbnail make you look shirtless , was like is he playing leo p style ! 🤣
He is rather Cute !
Clickbait 😉

They're becoming smarter 😦
Excellent demonstration of the mouthpieces
Great format! I loved this comparison video. I think I enjoyed the Drake, Link. And Aizen the most.
A lot of these sounded muffled to me surprisingly. Itd be nice to have a comparison vs the Yamaha 5c stock "Old reliable". Its between the Drake and Otto for me
A lot of that probably comes from that Jim doesn’t play bari sax as a main horn.
Interesting. My experiences with the Meyer and OL Tone Edge are exactly the other way around as your sound in this video. Thanks for the extensive comparison! The Vandoren V16 would be interesting to try as well.
Thank you very much for the precious showdown! What about the mentioned video on metal mouthpieces for baritone sax? :D
The JJ HR and the Francois along with the Drake sounded the best!

Where did you buy the Francois MP? Thanks in advance.
@@MARKLINMAN1 Virtuosity Musical Instruments. Right now the tip opening I have is on order. They are about $400.00.
Really looking forward to the Bari metal showdown!
Would y'all ever consider adding the Berg Larson or RPC to the comparison list?
WHY IS THERE A PICTURE OF KENNY G
Magnus Kaspersen why wouldn’t there be loool
He is the chosen one
you mean you don't practice while staring at a picture of our Lord and Saviour?
@@Danox94 well yes :( , but no one was supposed to know that!
I really liked the Optimum! Can you tell me what the tip opening is? Also is that a high baffel or low bafflel?
Another great video, I await the metal version of the video now.

Why is there no Altos in the background. Only tenors and sopranos?
hmmm - best guess = Only room enough there for one E-flat 'Boss' in that little space ? :)
Vandoren B7, any comments, I liked this one.
Mark DiSanto I’ve got both the B7 and the B9 in addition to most of the others Jim tested in this video. Both vandorens are great but I greatly prefer the B9 which is my favourite bari mouthpiece at the moment. Give the B9 a try, it’s great!
I play a 10M Fan Infusion. It's a monster that lets you get everything in one piece.
Drake Crossover is da way to go
So is the Drake a Crossover I or II?
Please, what model Francois Louis Spectruoso mouthpiece did you use? What chamber and tip opening?
How's the Metal mouthpiece test coming along?
I play a Theo Wanne Durga 4 Hard Rubber 7* on my Baritonsax and find the reeds H 2 too soft. What can you recommend me ? Any speciel brand? Sincerely yours Ole Birger.
Francois Louis Spectruoso wins, followed by Vandoren V16 and Otto Link Ebonite
What model is his Bari sax
How comfortable is the balam back Strap on bari?
Are rubber or metal mouthpeices better?
Can you please do a metal baritone mouthpiece showdown?
What kind of neck strap/harness are you using?
It looks like a Balam back strap
I love FL mouthpiece and use it’s ML ver.
But I like drake’s sound as much as.
Dime tan fácil es tocar el barítono que el alto pregunto, gracias.

I bought a tone edge when I first got my bari and I was super disappointed in the quality. I played it just until I got something more playable.

Pierre Colombo I’m playing a vintage sense soloist, Arnold Montgomery Luna, and Theo Wanne Durga on baritone.
My first jazz mouthpiece. Facing wasnt even and the rails weren't straight. Spilled a lotta money for a metal berg 110/2 and havent looked back
The Jody jazz HR sounded sexy
the one dislike is from a trumpet
Still waiting for the metal showdown

What opening is the S 80?

Looks like a C* opening

Could you send me one cuz the one I’m playing on right now is horrible !!!
Plz. Help
You could spend thousands of dollars choosing a mouthpiece. Just pick one a blow!!! Just get to a pro one asap after starting play.
Why Always playing phrygian mode?
He's just playing the same thing every time so it's easier to compare the differences in the mouthpieces, as opposed to differences in what he played.
The Drake wins.
Good intention , terrible presentation
Drake crossover 😩😩
