Gen 1 requires IR lights to work. Not super effective in tactical situations, especially if you suspect the enemy has their own NVG’s. BUT, install a few IR lights facing out around your house, and not only will you be able to see decently with your Gen 1’s from your windows in a dark house, but you get the added benefit of blinding people looking towards your house with their Gen 1’s. Super cheap, super easy, fairly effective for home defense.
Imagine being this paranoid. Burglarly is a crime of opportunity, someone needing a couple hundred to get by isnt going to be kitted out. If the military is on its way with a purpose, night vision might catch the tail of the hellfire missile

I just got lucky and got a gen for £80 with a big ass illuminator for walking the dog and messing around ital be brilliant. Airsoft I’m gonna be a giant bloody spotlight but where I am it’s like £1000 for a decent gen2+ and atleast 4gs for gen 3 so imma be happy with that 😂
I have gen1. Still better than nothing, good at dusk. But sure i would love to have gen3 :D too poor to have one. At least i have strong illuminator. I must look like giant lighthouse to other NVs. :D Awesome for night walks in woods. Once helped us with searching for one old lady with alzheimer that was lost. She just walked away from her house.

Gen-2 is MUCH closer to Gen-3. The jump from Gen-1 to Gen-2 back in the Early 70s was HUGE. Gen-2 does however fall short compared to Gen-3 in other ways, Such as EAGC, Auto Gate Technology's & and the use of a Gallium Arsenide Photocathode.

gen2+ is well worth it. I can barely tell the difference between a new gen2+ and gen3. Unless you buy like a super expensive gen3. definitely dont get gen1 tho

Not all gen 1 need IR illuminators. I have a Stargate M from Newcom Optik and it works rather well without an illuminator. My gen 2+ pvs14 is still significantly better.
You could use an IR torch and an oculus quest 2 Obviously you are going to be visible to anyone else using image intensifier tech. And you have latency, but it's cheap and you can play games on it!

Older versions, like we had in the late 80s early 90s was bad about this. Theyd try to adjust, but the tech just wasn't there yet. If it got too bright, like arty flares, personnel flares, or if someone in an AC130 or ground mounted laser and it caught you right before the NODs could adjust the filter, and they ate batteries like candy at halloween. The depth perception was really bad too. We would all have stories of running into trees, getting hit in the face with branches, and the mounts were horrible. Nothing helmet mounted back then. Youd put em on your head with this harness that was about useless, especially if you were doing a bounding overwatch or combat rush against a position. The helmet then went over the harness. Im glad someone decided to fund projects to further the tech.

That really depends if you want green or white phosphor. You should not spend more than $2000 on a green unit and for white can be anywhere from 2800 for a really good deal on some Elbit tube’s or $4000 plus for L3 unfilmed tubes.

yeah, anybody that thinks ufo's aren't real, evidently doesn't understand english... may not be alien, but there are objects...in the sky... that are not identified... saw some weird stuff swimming late at night when i was in like 8th grade. me and this girl were out in the pool a couple times and saw one that just did not move like anything else i've ever seen, or would think possible. but it did look like lights of a more normal aircraft. but didn't hear anything, and it definitely wasn't a plane because of the way it changed direction. and another that was a very big triangle of red lights... no green or white. just red markers, one in front, and more along it's leading edges. looked like maybe a big flying wing. there was an active airbase close by at the time, so maybe something to do with the stealth blackhawks, think they were built around that time. would've been awesome if i could've seen something other than just lights in the sky. only things like that i've ever really seen, and both were within like a week or so. middle tennessee in the late 90's.@@alamo_night_vision

If you're not into tactical/army stuff (where not being detected is paramount), the NVG10 is an excellent digital NV camera.
The new nvg30 is even better than the nvg10, but also quite a bit more expensive. I love mine.
