    Most people think Agent Orange was only used in Vietnam, but the US Military kept using it into the 1980's in places like Guam.

      I like it that people watch True Lies now and think the 'trick' was that Jamie Lee Curtis had a smoking body under the housewife attire. When we went to see it at the time, we saw it at the beginning being the thing that they made smoking hot Jamie Lee Curtis up like a dowdy housewife.

    "Trading Places", "Gran Torino", "Blazing Saddles", "42" and many more great films have racist language in them, and it's extremely important that they remain. It's vital that we continue to see and hear what bigoted and racist people say and do, so that we never forget why we chastise them. Those characters show us how NOT to live and how NOT to treat others.

    Context: That is Murphys first real movie. It is hard to imagine because everybody knows him now..but back then those guys were essentially comics and this kickstarted their career. Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy on the other hand(the Dukes) were insanely popular movie stars decades before that and had hundreds of movies under their belt. Ameche even won an Oscar after this movie for an other performance he gave. So it is quite funny to see movies in the context of the age they were produced in. I find it real fun to look up the interesting stories that come with those.

    Trading Places was Murphy’s 2nd movie. The first being the movie 48 Hours which was a bit of a surprise hit. At the time 48 hours was probably the more popular among the younger crowd but Trading Places has definitely held up better and is definitely more popular by a good margin. I agree with Biss that it’s not really a Christmas movie even though Aykroyd does dress as 🎅🏻 in the movie.

    Valentine and Louis were so called "selling short" the orange juice options, which means you bet that the price will fall. If you sell at 142 and then buy back at 29 (whatever currency), you get to pocket the difference - in this case 113 dollars or whatever. :)

    • @Zamiroh
      @Zamiroh День тому +5

      That's not exactly correct, though partially is. They were selling futures contracts of fcoj at 142. Those contracts would be exercised at a future date (in April), which is when they would be required to provide the goods. To fill all those orders, they bought contracts at much lower prices.

      The boys gave the Dukes a fake report that said the orange crop was going to be bad. Less oranges to go around would drive up the price, so the Dukes tried to buy as much as they can. Others saw what they were doing and jumped on board. The boys then “sold” options to those buying at the high prices (200 at 142). When the actual crop report was released indicating there was going to be a normal supply of OJ, everyone panicked that they had bought at too high a price, and thus sold everything until the market reached the normal price. The Dukes had bought high and sold low. With options, the consequences are multiplied.

    • @emurphy42
      @emurphy42 День тому

      @@BDogg2023Yeah, if you buy first then the worst case is you lose what you already paid, but if you short-sell then you risk the price going way higher and being forced to buy at that price to cover your obligation. (Except Winthorpe and Valentine correctly expected the price to go way lower, due to the real crop report.)
      Where the Dukes got screwed is that they not only invested the money they had, but also borrowed a bunch more money and invested that too (trading on margin). It had to be paid back at the end (margin call), but they expected to make a profit way bigger than what they borrowed.

    Great reaction Biss like always love this movie! And there are some fun-facts about this movie. The cop in booking that finds the PCP on Louis was Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer and voice for Yoda and many other Muppets and characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Grover and Cookie Monster. He plays a similar role in Blues Brothers. And the the pawn broker is played by the one-and-only rock and rol hall of fame Bo Diddley.
    There are other Cameos too like, Richard Hunt as Wilson as a stock market trader, Al Franken as a Baggage Handler in the train, a young Giancarlo Esposito as a cellmate when Eddie character is in jail, and Jamie Lee Curtis younger sister Kelly Curtisas a cameo too as Penelope's friend Muffy on the scene in the country club. Keep up the good work. And merry X-mas for you and all of your familiy and friends.

    Denholm Elliott (Coleman the butler) is one of the unsung gems of this film. His acting is so under-stated (except when Coleman is pretending to be a drunk Irish priest). Just before he locks Winthorpe out of his own apartment, he has a look of regret on his face that says, "My old boss was kind of a stuck-up snob, but he doesn't deserve this crap that my real bosses the Duke brothers are doing to him. I hate myself for the part I am playing in this sick game of theirs" all that in the briefest instant- just a look down before he closes the door. 19:23
    And he has my single favorite line in the whole film: "Eggnog?" Fifty years of class repression boiled into a single word. 34:54

    Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd trick two millionaires.
    Top actors (Murphy, Aykroyd, Curtis, Ameche, Bellamy, Elliott, Belushi ...) in an extremely funny comedy with plenty of social criticism by John Landis.
    In 1984, the film was nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Music, Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Best Adaptation Score” category.
    Denholm Elliott won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and Jamie Lee Curtis for Best Supporting Actress, Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod were nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
    In the comedy/musical category, the film and Eddie Murphy (category: Best Leading Actor) were nominated for a Golden Globe.

    I NEVER comment on a person's appearance, and as a man, I prefer to focus on more substantial, less superficial aspects of a woman to compliment, but I am pausing just 49 seconds in to tell you how extraordinarily pretty you look. You have always been an exceptional beauty, but today you took my breath away and I wanted you to know. Now back to the video

    And his 'Suit Case' at the start of the movie, is a briefcase. Silly Goose!

    A must see Christmas movie is Rare Exports. A Finnish movie. Very Finnish. The Finnish name for Santa is Joulupukki. Meaning The Yuletide Goat. With horns, like the devil. He has very little to do with the friendly Santa other countries have. The Joulopukki knows who has been good, but more importantly, he knows who has been bad... The sack isn't for bringing presents. It is for carrying bad kids away.
