Part 1 - • Cinematic Lighting Wit...
Copied from part 1 description:
So I wanted to do something a little more in depth than the standard 1 light setup video - there's a lot to think about when lighting and that doesn't change when you're only using 1 light! Hopefully this video helps with the process of thinking about why you would put a light in a certain place, what it's supposed to be representing, and how you can use natural light and other tools to back up your single light.
Camera:
Panasonic LUMIX S5
Canon 600D (BTS)
Samsung Note 8 (BTS)
Lenses:
Lumix G Vario 12 - 60mm f/3.5 - 5.6
Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AI
Sigma 85mm f/1.4
Is using 1 light a hindrance or can it help you to learn more about light?

Can you make a review video for the cinematic pictures and the colors for this movie👇
" The Lady Of heaven" 2M views at trailer
Thank u Norman Reedus, for this tutorial.
Hahaha you're welcome
I learned so much from this and part 1, wow! Seriously the best channel out there on cinematography, love how the set ups are so creative even with minimal gear. Gonna try some of these out! :) 🙌🏼 great video as always Rob!!
Thanks so much Riza! Super happy to know you're learning from my videos, definitely try some of them out! :)
this is like asmr but for lightning. thank you for blessing us with your content
Haha thank you so much! I appreciate it! :)
I love how you look like a badass but sound like a scholar, and how the VO over a silent model separates you into these two different characters. It’s quite fascinating haha! Definitely a defining characteristic of your content. I imagine it would be a bit confusing for people if you decided to suddenly do a monologue to camera in a future video lol.
Of course, this is me assuming that you do in fact film yourself, but it could also be an actor because to be honest the audience hasn’t been given a clue either way, ha!
Haha I love this, and you're right, it would totally ruin the mystery! ;) I'm glad you're finding an extra layer to my videos, that's pretty bloody awesome!
@@RobEllisCinematographer I have also been wondering if the model is also the voice behind these videos lol
Your videos have always been helpful. Thank you for giving knowledge and insight with your valuable videos.
My pleasure! Happy to know they've been helpful! Thank you! :)
Thank you Brian Cox. Really amazing content! learning a lot from these series!
Thank you very much Rob, as always your videos are priceless. I'll be waiting for the special on modifiers, the beauty dish light is something I've never seen before, usually for this kind of lighting people use light dome with a grid. Now I'm a huge fan of yours.
Thanks so much Luigi! Absolutely, generally I don't see the beauty dish used outside of photography, which is strange because it's got a certain quality to it that can be extremely useful for video! I appreciate it! :)
Your videos are 20x better than courses I've spent upwards of $400 dollars for.
Wow thank you so much!
I simply can't thank you enough for putting so much effort in everything: editing, music, information. This 2 part video is so pleasing to watch and learn from.
Rob, it's not just your skill that I admire. What I also admire is the way you convey the subject at hand - you have a very extraordinary gift. Thank you so much for all you do, for all your effort!🙏Stay healthy! With best wishes, Frank
Thank you so much Frank! That means a lot, really. Sometimes I think I'm just rambling on about nothing haha, so to hear you say that eases that worry a bit! :) thanks so much for your kind words - and back at ya, stay healthy and well! :)
The map is not the territory & once again you are proving that your backyard is a universe of creative possibility. 🎥💪🏼👍🏻
Thank you so much! And absolutely! You can create worlds anywhere :)
Well now you become my Mentor :) thank you for this knowledge.
Loved it rob, Thank you so much for educating us. Tonnes of love from India
Glad you liked it Yathish, thank you so much!! Love from the UK! :)
Superb analysis and breakdown Rob. Mesmerising as always 👌👏
Thanks so much Eifion! :)
Dude your channel is so underrated! It's a gem! Love the way you present your information and the way you break everything down!
Ah yes welcome back to my favorite video series, fantastic job Rob!
Thanks so much, thanks for sticking with the channel! :D
As always, you do such a great job with these videos! As someone who wants to get better at lighting, I'm learning so much with each video you do, so thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! Glad to know you're learning from my videos, that's all I can ask for! :D
Man, this is great series of cinematic lighting with 1 light on budget. I've watched all of them on your channel. Thank you for making tips! Much appreciate it!
Thank you so much for watching them!! :)
It's really helpful. Thank you for giving knowledge and your great work!
Thanks for watching Dmitry! :)
Always TOP tier, informative and quality! Appreciate your work and knowledge man! Gave me so much confidence in lighting.
Thanks so much Isaiah, super happy to hear my work has given you more confidence in lighting! Actually gives me more confidence in my own lighting to hear that, what a nice loop to get stuck in! Haha! :)
I was waiting for this since i've finished watching part 1 for the 10th time hahah, and must say I've done the chalenging of guessing how those remaining scenes were made, got almost there hahaha.
As usual great content! Those lighting videos are great, every diferent technique, kind of make a mental arsenal of possibilities when I go to set. Once again Thank you very much for sharing!
Haha thanks Luis, good to know there's a lot of re-watchability value on that one! That's great and also a really good idea for a series, like a "guess how it was lit" sort of thing haha! Thanks so much, so happy to know my videos are helping you with your own work!! :)
I can't be a patreon, but I highly appreciate your work. Really big shoutout from South of France.
Absolutely Victor, simply commenting on the videos is also supporting me, so I am very thankful for that! Thank you! :)
Another Masterpiece Rob!
Thank you so much!!
These are excellent videos. I have been slacking on developing my lighting skills but this video series always refreshes my creativity and motivation!
Thank you so much Joshua, glad they've helped you out! :)
You are a master of your game .. thank you as usual for such amazing simple yet great content .. you should have a “master class” among the best people out there
Thank you so much, I really do appreciate it! :)
Thank you, Prof Rob. You are a legend.
Thank you so much man! Glad you're still watching my content! :)
Just got your color grading tutorial...I hope it'll be of great value to me. Your content is very informative.
Let me know if it is!! :) thank you so much Cosmas!
I go to your best work and saw several videos and liked it very much. Keep up the good work. That is really awesome to know!Thank you!Thank you
Thank you so much! Super happy you're enjoying my channel! :)
I must say as a Gaffer, I find these videos super interesting to watch, can I ask, how did you build your cookaloris? and have you got any tips on it?
Thanks so much! I'm glad you're finding them interesting and not horrendous, when you see things like that beauty of a job with the gel and reflector in the garden haha! ;) For the cucoloris, it was just a case of making a wooden frame, cutting some random shapes out of some thick black card, then stapling the black card to the frame :)
@@RobEllisCinematographer I can most definitely appreciate these videos, one of the things that drove me into gaffer work is the incredible outcomes you get with lighting using sometimes the craziest and odd-looking of rigs.
For the card, did you do both sides with black card or did you do one side black and the other white so you could use the cookaloris to give a slight bounce if needed?
@@zeewhitewolf Absolutely! And sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do - as long as you're not putting anyone in danger!
Both sides black, as that's just the type of card I happened to pick up. But one side black and the other white is a good idea for versatility!
@@RobEllisCinematographer Definitely, I have learned a lot more about light control from your videos and it really helped me understand ways to expand my understanding of using more surfaces for light manipulation, your videos using the cove lighting was incredible so I am always going to look forward to your next video, definitely, if it's about lighting!
I will defo have to have a go at making my own cookie, I will let you know how I get on when I make one mate, thank you for the content and advice too!
@@zeewhitewolf Super happy to hear you've learnt from my channel! :) and yes, let me know how you get on!!
I am always in awe of the beautiful images you create with your lighting that are equally complimented with your perfect explanations. I am very new to cinematography, but my background is in photography so this makes a lot of sense to me (the video). my channel is pretty new and it seems every time I have an idea for a video test or otherwise, here you are with fantastic advice and beautiful concepts. Hope you don't mind that I try to recreate a lot of what you teach. You are seriously one of my favorite UA-camrs.
Thank you so much! :) a lot of ideas and techniques around lighting carry over through photography and cinematography and image making in general - I'm glad it makes sense to you! And I'm glad you're finding my advice so helpful! Absolutely, recreate away, it's one of the best ways to learn concepts and get used to ideas! :) thanks so much for your kind words!
Hi Rob, great content! This is a detail, but I believe that distance doesn't determine the length of the shadow. I think it's the angle relative to the subject. So, for longer shadows the light must be lower (and closer to the ground in the yard example)
Great channel, love it! Informative and I learned a lot... thx
Thankyou Bro ❤️
Excelente vídeo Rob, me has ayudado muchísimo.
Hoy mismo pongo en práctica lo aprendido. Saludos desde Perú

Happy to know I've helped! :D thank you so much! :)
My man coming in with the good good content again 😏
Thanks man! :)
Great video as always (coming from a person who learned about your channel 5 hours ago and watched half of the content already). One caveat, though, is that in 5:30 I don't think the shadow length is affected by the distance, it's just an angle of the lamp relative to the angle of the sun, isn't it? It's true that sun rays may be treated as parallel due to distance, but if that affects the shadow length then you should be able to match the shadow length by placing the lamp slightly lower I guess. Anyway, keep up the great work, Rob! :)
Awesome video Rob!
Thanks so much! :)
Great content, as always!
Thanks Tomas, happy you enjoyed it!!
sorry I am late but watching now.

I want a short film by Rob Ellis! DO IT!
Haha at some point! ;)
Hi Rob, I'd like to ask you for a recommendation. If you were me starting out in cinematography and you had let's say £500 budget to spend just on lighting equipment, how would you recommend spending it? That would have to include stands and modifiers as well.
I’m in the same situation as you, I hope he’ll see this comment!
Buy a single point light with as much output you can afford. Godox are great value. A small pocket light like the F1 for fill or hair light. Then buy 3-4 light stands and a shower curtain. A large 5 in 1 reflector and you can do 90% of what you will ever need.
Johnny hit the nail on the head :)
I mistakenly wrote "f1", its the FalconEyes F7, great value RGB light. If there's budget left, I would add some high quality CTO/CTB gels, and some plastic mirrors.
@@RobEllisCinematographer late to the reply but thank you 😂
Thanks for the great budget tips in your tutorials
Was the last scene shot on a 35mm ?
great content as always! I wonder do you have an acting background?
Thank you! :) I do not! I'd imagine if I had to do anything but sit around looking moody I wouldn't be quite as adept haha!
Your videos are so inspiring. As someone who lives on a rainy place too, I’m curious on how do you deal with rain and lightning, from the technical perspective but also from the artistic.
Thanks so much Álex! :) That's a tough one, especially if you shoot on a budget a lot like me - generally it's just a case of trying to plan around bad weather. Happy to throw up plastic bags on lighting when it's lighter rain, but I don't think I'd trust that sort of thing in heavier rain!
@@RobEllisCinematographer I saw the plastic bag solution and I loved it, I’ll apply that to my not-weather-sealed lens😂, some electric tape and the plastic bag will do😅
@@alexsobrino haha you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes you know! ;) but like I said, I wouldn't take the risk in super heavy rain!!
I’m so curious what that lamp was and why it was blurred out! Lol
Haha because it's a half naked figure - one of my previous uploads (ua-cam.com/video/RJqgsGDkTl0/v-deo.html) got restricted monetization, and the only possible reason I could think of for why, was that it featured the lamp. I guess the algorithm saw boobs and said nah 😂 so just preventing it from happening again, ridiculous that I have to do that, I know!
@@RobEllisCinematographer I figured it was something like that. I could kind of tell. Yeah, that's whack. god forbid there is a sculpture of a half naked women in the background! Think of the children! lol.
seriously though, you've got some great content.
Hahaha yeah I know right! Thanks so much Ben, I appreciate it! :)
mmm looks sweet
Thanks Sam!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You could be a great actor for the Dark series of Netflix Germany
Haha thank you!!
are you filming in raw or log ? beautiful footage
This was in ProRes Raw yes!! :) thank you so much!
Thanks men. Awesome, as always. One question: what c-stand do you use for your lightning?? I recently bought a godox VL-150 and I am looking for a good stand, and neewer has a model for 110 euros, but other brands as avenger, for example, has the same products much expensive (as least in amazon) and they look very similar... should I spend more money on a good one or you are just paying the brand???
Thanks Diego! :) I'm using a Pixapro UK brand C-stand here, which is also a bit costly compared to cheaper brands - but I would absolutely recommend spending a little more on C-stands and going for something like Avenger, as a good C-stand will last you years and be far more reliable than a cheap one!
I'm torn between godox sl150 and forza 500, which one should I go for?
Why the SL150 and not the VL150? And do you need more power or is that not too much of an issue? There's a few different reasons why you would choose one over the other :)
'...So let's continue through and analyze our other clips" - "LIKE"
:D thank you Tristan!!
Hi Rob, not sure if you'll see this but what program do you use to make these kinds of graphics? 1:48 - I want to create similar ones for a promotional video I'll be shooting, thanks!
I make them on Photoshop! It's a little time consuming and I should probably find a program that makes it a little easier haha but it's nice to have control over the details :)
@@RobEllisCinematographer okay thanks :)
Does resolve accept ProRes RAW? or you had to transcode it?
I'm transcoding it through Assimilate Scratch Play Pro first. It's a pretty painless process but I wish Blackmagic/Apple/whoever would get it sorted and implement it into Resolve!
Dude, I'm sure you get this a lot. You know what I'm about to say.... So therefore I'm not even gonna say it. But you know. Lol. You know.
OK, Screw it.... You've got some serious Gary Oldman vibes going on.
I've only ever had 2 other people tell me this, so you've just confirmed this for them haha! :) I've had a lot comments on my channel about my likenesses to actors actually, and it's a really strange mix, I must be some kind of shape shifter :D
Why did you stop using BMCC 4K?
I use the BMCC 2.5k and the BMMCC 1080p - I've not stopped using them, but I've been using the S5 for my latest videos because it's great! Especially when paired with the Ninja V! Filming yourself can also be quite difficult and it's lovely being able to crop in without losing quality when I need to :)
@@RobEllisCinematographer oh, get it. All your footage looks stunning! Congratulations dude 👊
Thanks so much Miguel!! :)
I don't understand why your not getting free lighting to test out. You actually use lighting in real scenes and against natural lighting. It's a shame they only care about people who just talk in a studio and manual reader's like Mr undon who is a joke.
I do! :D Not a massive amount, but a lot of my videos feature lighting that has been sent to me - I just try to blend it in to the video and not make tooooo much of a point of it - I try to get that balance between showing the light and having actual educational content, rather than just tech specs! :)
@@RobEllisCinematographer good to hear, I would love to do youtube videos but I'm busy making films.
Thumbs up for a video on the beauty dish!
:D
What is the light bulb you are using? It looks just as good as the one from Aputure.
They are made by Avatar Controls - www.avatarcontrols.com/index.php?ac=article&at=list&tid=133 - although I'd imagine the Aputure have more functions and better colour rendition! :)
