This is wonderful to hear - as things are a bit more basic in part 1 compared to the other parts, I was hoping I could bring something a little different to the basic ideas in this section and explain them a little differently! It's difficult to find information on topics like this broken down into something I myself would have understood better when I was first learning, and even making this it gave me more of a clarity too, regardless of the fact I already knew the basics. Love this channel. It’s funny; even though I understand color temperature, it always confused me when one would raise the cameras color temperature to get a cooler look and vice versa. No longer am I confused. Thanks, man.

Quality video as always! I would ask for a video of how/when you use softer/diffused light vs harsh light, lighting angles to represent a feeling in a scene. I can see you providing a wonderful explanation there, as always. Warm regards!
Hey Rob, awesome breakdowns and tutorials. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge. Would be super useful if you could share your techiques how to nail manual focus on shots with movement. Like for example in the concert and wedding trying to have artist or subject on focus where there are lots of movement, and with gimbal as things get a lot more harder.

The only thing I can really say for that is practise - focus peaking helps out massively as a visual aid, but in terms of more run and gun one man band situations, it's really getting used to how your lens focuses and thinking about which way you should be turning that focus ring in relation to things getting further, or closer to the lens to get the focus correct. Once you've practised that enough it computes in your brain a little better, but there's no hard technical solution to shooting like this, it's just getting used to it and practise!

Rob i tried this at home works. Although how realistic does the light need to be? The light in your scene 1 the lamp considering placement would not light up your face that much especially to the opposite side.
Hey bro in my phone display original color pro and vivid mode I've chosen original color pro color temperature warm deus this best for watching movies?
After adjusting the camera's white balance during shooting, how do you calibrate the white balance during color correction later? Or does it not require calibration in the future?
So match the camera wb to the color temp of your lights. Then adjust white balance on camera for creative looks. Is this correct? But what about when it comes to things like slog and shooting raw so you can manipulate color later in post? What is the relationship between controlling color temperature, color grading, and shooting raw/slog?
Awesome series! A bit late comment though.. There is a difference in using a certain temperature and adjusting the whitebalans. I'm not exactly sure how it works but I presume daylight has more of the colorspectrum so the subject reflect all the colors it can, while with warm or cool light only a limited spectrum. Do you usually notice a difference in using just any light and adjusting the whitebalans vs using a more white daylight temperature, in how objects and people look?
Thank you so much! I'm not overly technical in this regard, but yes there probably would be minor differences, because of the different peaks in the spectrum of the particular light you're shooting under - when LED lights started being used for filmmaking they were mostly a bit rubbish because of their low CRI rating and colour spikes for example, but now they're much better. A true tungsten/halogen light used to look much much better on camera than an LED or even HMI (I think it still does, but it's a much closer comparison than before!) because of it's colour spectrum being the closest you can get to actual sunlight/daylight with a CRI of 100. So taking these factors into account it depends on what you're shooting with in the first place! If you're shooting in natural light, or you're shooting with a tungsten/halogen lamp/light, then pushing your white balance around is still going to be super accurate. But with LED lights I'd imagine there are certain spikes in different places when you change colour temperature which could also effect how the image appears between different camera white balances and different white balances on the lighting unit itself. But honestly, I don't think there are any massively noticeable differences with the better accuracy of LED units nowadays. That's my understanding anyway - someone correct me if I'm talking absolute rubbish haha!
@@RobEllisCinematographer I bought it!! It’s really good. I can’t wait for you to create more. I had a few questions on the last part of the video when you talked about mixed lighting. You didn’t mention much about the camera’s white balance with the mixed lighting.
I picked up a Pocket 6K for the internal ND's and BRAW... just shortly after, they announced the BMD Video Assist could get BRAW from the S5 🤣 but internal ND's were something I had personally needed for some time so it made sense for me to make the switch! I've shot a few run and gun jobs in the past month though and if I still had the S5 they would've been a breeze - so I'm probably gonna end up grabbing one again at some point!
@@Aviciiz they are super super helpful! In terms of image I couldn't really favour one over the other, there's definitely a different feeling to both cameras, which I imagine is the way the different sensors render an image (I'm not an expert on this stuff and full frame feels a bit different to work with on the S5) but both are equally as good in my opinion and you could easily match them. I don't think the general viewer would notice a difference! The S5 is excellent in low light also but the Pocket is still pretty good!
I am not sure you replying this message or not. But wanna ask something. Why would you bother to match your color temperature of your camera to the light source. I mean you used a lamp and tungsten 3200K and moved your camera white balance to 3200. Can't u just set ur camera white blalance to 5600K since the frist place and then use warm light like 3200K or whatever. Isn't it more simple? I just asking cuz I really have no idea. No intention to insult.

Are you back to blackmagic after your S5?
I picked up a Pocket 6K for the internal ND's and BRAW... just shortly after, they announced the BMD Video Assist could get BRAW from the S5 🤣 but internal ND's were something I had personally needed for some time so it made sense for me to make the switch! I've shot a few run and gun jobs in the past month though and if I still had the S5 they would've been a breeze - so I'm probably gonna end up grabbing one again at some point!

@@Aviciiz they are super super helpful! In terms of image I couldn't really favour one over the other, there's definitely a different feeling to both cameras, which I imagine is the way the different sensors render an image (I'm not an expert on this stuff and full frame feels a bit different to work with on the S5) but both are equally as good in my opinion and you could easily match them. I don't think the general viewer would notice a difference! The S5 is excellent in low light also but the Pocket is still pretty good!

But wanna ask something.
Why would you bother to match your color temperature of your camera to the light source. I mean you used a lamp and tungsten 3200K and moved your camera white balance to 3200.
Can't u just set ur camera white blalance to 5600K since the frist place and then use warm light like 3200K or whatever. Isn't it more simple?
