One of their little known songs, "Temptations 'Bout to Get Me", has got to be one of their most soulful grooves. The vocals of Felix & Eddie, plus the arrangement will blow ya away!

Gotta just luv that soulful voice of Felix's. And he still got it! In an interview, they said that Otis Redding had to peek in while they were recording to check out if the Rascals were really a white group. Luv it! Rascal fan forever.

The Olympics had the first well known version of this song, that came out in 1965......The Rascals did a good version though.

I don't think it was that well known. It didn't get any higher than #86 on the charts at a time when almost all the airplay was given to the top 40. I was seventeen at the time and very much into music, and I hadn't heard the song before the Young Rascals did it.
The only thing I knew the Olympics for was "Western Movies" which was their only top ten hit. The only other record they had that hit the top 40 (although #40 was as high as it got) was "The Bounce" and I don't think a lot of people would remember that either.
Of course they were from L.A. so some of their songs in the lower half of the top 100 may have got more airplay in that area than in the rest of the country.

Harri, you took your last break at one of the best parts of the song. There was a half-second of silence before they came back blasting "Good Lovin'". Normally you back up a few seconds after your pauses, but you didn't here and that pause was lost. Nevertheless, another good reaction.

America's first true blue eyed soul band. You're one of the very few on UA-cam who react to this band. These guys deserve to recognized for what they were. Although this was a cover version, we in the black neighborhood respected these guys and they in turn respected the music and the musicians they loved. Thanks for this reaction. Hopefully you'll find their songs "Lonely Too Long", "Come On Up", "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore", and "A Girl Like You". All hits, all great songs.

as known in 1966 - the young rascals - their first hit that put them on the american musical map. i was 13 and of course ran down to our local record shop and bought the 45 rpm single. felix cavaliere had a pretty unique voice. still with us at 77 years old and was part of ringo starr's all star band. and you are correct - this song was originally done by the olympics that didn't go anywhere. felix heard it on the radio - they did a remake cover and that was that

    • @barryanderson3910
      @barryanderson3910 2 роки тому +2

@@barryanderson3910 it was really good too but of course the rascals version has my vote - probably because it was the first one i heard. there were quite a few 60's hits that were remakes. i didn't know carole king wrote 'pleasant valley ' sunday till 10 years after the monkees did it. although she and gerry goffin wrote so many hits for 60's groups i was not surprised.

In their cover version of Good Lovin’ the Rascals changed one chord that changed to whole harmonic flavor of the song.
To my ears the changed chord seems a better fit in the chord progression.
In the Olympics version I believe that it is a young Billy Preston on keyboards.

Agreed. This is one of the rockin’est songs of all time. But the one thing you missed when you paused the song after the organ solo by Felix Cavaliere is the iconic 2.5 second dead silent pause, followed by the Rascals jumping back in right on beat and at full volume and tempo with instruments and vocals. It’s the best dead air in music.

THIS was the hit version - the guys who did it originally are relagated to a footnote! They also hit with "Groovin'", "I've Been Lonely Too Long" and "A Beautiful Morning." Another Blue Eyed Soul that rocked around this time was "Gimme Some Lovin'" by The Spencer Davis Group (which featured Steve Winwood). Both were in heavy rotation and big hits on soul stations!

"People Got To Be Free" and "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" also are Young Rascal monster hits of the 60s. You can still see Felix sing them. Have some Good Lovin'. Also, the San Francisco Band named "It's a Beautiful Day," plays a different song called "Good Lovin'." Check out their song "White Bird." Speaking of San Francisco Bands, "Quicksilver Messenger Service" has a song called "Fresh Air," you'll love. Add "What About Me?" by them. "Gold and Silver," too. Dino Valenti, who wrote the first two, also wrote the 60's anthem, "Get Together," sung by The Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young on vocals. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Santana, Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), and Sopwith Camel are more San Francisco Bands. Their anthem was "Are You Going to San Francisco,?" Rock on!

To all of us Northern New Jersey'ers in '67 surely remember the UHF station out of Newark with Zacherleys Disco-teen television show, you all know the live band of the day HAD to play this one if they were to have any chance of winning.

The grateful dead covered this since the late 60's. Poorly.
Not really LaBamba but more Buddy Holly.

When you mentioned "La Bamba," I had to laugh because I used sing in a band that did this song and when we got to the part in the solo that you were talking about sounding like "La Bamba," we would sing (in 3 part harmony) "La la Bamba," 3 times, which would take us to the break at the end of the solo, then everybody in the audience would shout "Good lovin'!" Great minds think alike? BTW, this song was recorded first by a doo wop group called the Olympics a year earlier.

Don't know if you're a fan of Los Lobos, but when they play La Bamba live they'll often veer into Good Lovin...I'm a huge Rascals fans and even after the hits had some terrific songs like Glory Glory a little Gospel which Felix handles, some jazzy stuff Sky Trane & Love Letter, Hold On, Carry Me Back and then Tamptation's Bout To Get Me with Eddie and Felix trading lines

Pulling into our local A&W Root Beer Drive-In, in a 58 Chevy, my girlfriend riding shotgun, with this song kicking on the AM. The nostalgia is grabbin' me!

This was a HUGE Number One in 1966 for The Young Rascals! It's gone on to reach iconic status. If you had to explain all the things that were fun about the 60's, this song would do the trick. One of my first actual memories was hearing this song on the radio. I always smile when I hear this one!
