- In our coverage of Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell and her missing children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, people who have known them say they have extreme religious beliefs and are members of a doomsday "cult."
But the nature of the reported cult is hard to define, especially since the Daybells have not spoken to the media. We have tried.
What we do know is Chad and Lori are or have been members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and they are also affiliated with several informal groups whose teachings go contrary to what one would hear in a typical Latter-day Saint congregation.
We reached out to several people in east Idaho who were or are part of these semi-secretive groups. Several have agreed to go on the record with their names, and others have agreed on the condition of anonymity, as they are still active Latter-day Saints or fear retaliation from other members of these groups.
There doesn't appear to be any sort of formal organization or clear doctrine among these nonconventional groups of Latter-day Saints. In fact, many of the people interviewed by EastIdahoNews.com reported vastly different experiences.
"I think 'cult' is such a weird word because it doesn't accurately describe what's happening," a woman we'll call Jessica said. "An 'extremist group' is a better term."
It started when Jessica and her husband moved to eastern Idaho in 2015. A man in their new congregation -- called a ward -- approached her and said he was "spiritually prompted" to offer her a job.
She accepted the job and worked at the business, which was out of the man's home.
She found her new boss had beliefs that were different than what's typically taught in the church. For example, Latter-day Saints believe God gives people spiritual gifts to help them serve others. The man who hired her took this belief to an extreme.
He claimed to have power to see spirits and cast out evil spirits from people. He would counsel with people in his home who were supposedly struggling with evil spirits inside of them, and he would claim to cast the spirits out. She said he wasn't fulfilling a church role or acting in any official capacity.
"His friends knew about his spiritual gifts, and they would tell their friends, so it was all word of mouth," she said. "People came to him to be healed."
He even appeared to heal Jessica of her celiac, blood sugar and thyroid issues. As a result, she stopped taking all her medications and supplements and ate gluten products again.
Her boss's gifts seemed to extend into the digital realm too. Once when the business was having computer problems, he invoked his spiritual power to repair a broken computer server. Other times, if there was a bad internet connection, he might blame it on some sort of spiritual interference.
"I knew it was different, but at the time, I wasn't going to judge what works for somebody," Jessica said. "In my mind, I was working there because God wanted me too, and I wasn't going to question God."

Chad Daybell isn't the first person to ever use Religion as part of his Con Game.
Yes. Take Joe Smith. Please.
Yep. Look at David Miscavige and Scientology and no one knows where his wife went to.
Obviously ... Jonestown???
Watch TV. Half the programming consists of evangelists conning their flock into believing that eternal salvation is achieved by giving their money to the preacher. Did someone say CON???
True. But there’s always new people to be conned.
I'd like to acknowledge this host. It's very rare to see an interview where the host actively listens and asks well thought out questions.
Violet Joy to bad people like you don’t 😆
He's a writer for a small, local newspaper in Idaho and has covered this story. Saw him on the Dateline about Chad and Laurie Daybell.
Violet Joy he should get an emmy
Yep, active listening is the key to every good interview AND sale!

Beverly, there are good pastors out there who care and who follow the tenets of the church - not religion - and who honor God. Your comment, while I completely understand where you’re coming from, is not fair in it’s totality. Just like saying all cops are evil and murderers. They’re not all that way. A few bad apples, ie. murderers, don’t ruin the whole bunch thank God.
I was brought up in a strict Catholic home, going to church every Sunday and any Holy Days. When I finished college and moved out of my parent's home I still went to church but when I was in my late twenties I stopped going. I became very disenchanted with the Catholic church due to their handling of the child sex abuse cases but I didn't lose my faith in God. I am against organized religion but not against faith in God. To my surprise, my very devout Catholic parents completely understood how I felt and agreed that I didn't need to go somewhere specific to pray.

How many levels of “wrong” is it when your former employer sets you up with a “free” therapist and then sits in on the sessions.
Scientologists
I practically vomited in my mouth. No way - no how - is anyone sitting in on my therapy sessions.
@@klee5204 Another example of cult brain washing...If anyone seeks counseling it is best served using a therapist that has never met you or any area in your past who will help you by giving you advice not solving your problems for you.

nobody MADE Lori believe anything. Lori wanted to believe it. she wanted to believe certain things to justify her bad behavior for ulterior motives probably... Like in the book of Judas.. Judas claims he was the most valiant of the apostles because he was given the most difficult task of betraying Christ(Jesus did say one of the apostles in the room would betray him, Judas took that as an assignment?... why?).. Judas I don't think believed his own argument as much as he just wanted to believe it. the motive for Judas was probably money.

I must commend this reporter once again-I’ve commented before on his interviewing skills-for his pinpoint focus throughout all the interviews he’s been conducting on the Vallow-Daybell case. I’m a former reporter and believe me, people can be squirrelly, which makes investigative journalism a challenge. It’s obvious he’s done a lot of background research and is confident with his knowledge of this cult and its tenets. He knows how to keep his interviewees comfortable and on track. I love this guy. He’s smart and sensitive-a superstar in the making. And ... he’s rockin’ those socks!
Nate is excellent at concealing his own opinions on his quest for the truth. National level reporters, in my opinion, would be much more watchable if they adopted Nate's techniques.
Yes! Nate is amazing! He should win an award for investigative journalism.
@@margaretgabriel7776, maybe soon he will go national! He's got the talent!
So true! If you read the comments on all of his youtube interviews everyone has the same reaction - great work, keen intelligence, but also incredibly compassionate; that's what is so often lacking with many journalists working for high-profile media channels.
This reporter is so good. He let's the people tell there story. Very professional !
I feel so sorry for Tammy, Chads ex wife who “misteriously” died in her sleep... it’s all so obvious! I’m praying for the autopsy to bring results to lock Chad up
I believe he killed her. Aren't they going to exhume her body for an autopsy? Has that been done yet?
@@Hamigal Yes, she's been exhumed and autopsied. AFAIK, results are still pending or the investigation has them but hasn't made them public, I'm not sure which.
@@inkandflame Thank you. So much bad going on hard to keep up with it all. I'm trying thou.
@7BlackSwans Silversmithing Pleasure meeting you. Crazy story. Hope all is well in your life.

Spiritual gift ? More like nacarisst personality disorder. Remember Jim Jones?
Proper medical term " BPD. Borderline personality disorder" she defines the terminology. Such a greedy evil woman.
Spiritual illnesses (enemies of Spiritual Life) are not gifts, and spirituality does not require intermediaries, much less to guide people to filicide and homicide. Each person can talk and listen to God in their conscience, cults are just ignorant and vulnerable people who fail to dig deep when following criminals who call themselves 'visionaries' and 'prophets'.
@@darknessfadestolight4312 narcissistic personality disorder and borderline personality disorder are two different things they can coincide but they are different diagnosis
Oh yeah! I remember Jim Jones alright!
That was my first thought when this nightmare began.
All I hear is 'their spiritual gifts' but all I see are their delusions.
@ Norla Vine...... Me too!!
👏 👏
It's a delusion to believe in spiritual gifts at all. Jesus never said one word about that. He is the only way to the Father and needs no intermediary. #JesusWordsOnly
One of my siblings is in a kind of prepper cult. I have walked in on her while she was obviously lost in a daydream and when I asked if she was ok, she dreamily looked at me and said some very strange things. She was obsessed with finding a certain style of suitcase that can be brought to their meeting place on the day. My point is, she literally lives for the day when this world will end and her new life will begin in the new system of things, as she calls it. I understand just how far down the rabbit hole some people can go when they are caught up in a group mentality of being special and chosen. I cannot even be around her now for all her death mongering. Their thoughts are not the same as other people. Its total brainwashing.
I’m so sorry for you and your daughter
This sounds like a bot generated comment tbh
@@heartlights I am a bot! 🤣🤣🤣
@The Vagabond Sage in the Woods how long has your sibling been prepping? I wonder do they finally snap out of it eventually? Sorry to hear that btw, it must be hard for you. Take care
@@disappear_here82 thank you. She has been into it for years. She is so far down the rabbit hole, I doubt she could be snapped back. Without him, I would not watch this new channel. I have never liked to watch the news, but he has such a calm spirit, I enjoy watching this news channel.
Agreed. Everyone really likes Nate. I’ve seen numerous comments about how good a reporter he is. As you say, he is also a person of truth, respect and kindness and an example to us as to how we should interact with each other.
Wait, why didn’t she take her kids with her? I don’t know how I feel here. If I had to run away from a “cult” my kids are coming too.
@Bobbie Mead that's the FLDS, not the mainstream LDS Church. The mainstream church DOESN'T practice polygamy. She's talking about the mainstream LDS church AND the Daybell cult, which is a break off of the mainstream LDS church. Polygamy has nothing to do with this story.
Exactly!!!!
I was a little unsure about what she was talking about there. I think she means she's no longer a Mormon, but her kids are; not that they're in that cult.
She didn't talk specifics about her family, which is totally understandable.
@Bobbie Mead Warren Jeffs group broke off many many years ago.
This daybell group is more of a bad thread running through the main church, taking advantage of church members.
Sadly, sometimes you just have to ssve yourself. It's scary, it's sad, but sometimes you just have to.

Julia weber Sounds to me loony right wing GOP crazy church people.
Layer upon church layer of control of women. Make them think that they are crazy, easy, then step in and save them.
Tammy was probably poisoned
She was killed the same way JJ was... first she was sedated (date drug) then a large kitchen trash bag was placed around her sleeping head and secured with duct tape. She died of asphyxia; the timing had to be just right, so that a hurried autopsy would fail to find the asphyxia... depending on the sedative used there may not have even been a trace in her dead body. Alex was probably killed the same way.
The clue is the way they found JJ. He wasn't supposed to be found. So, they didn't remove the 'weapon' bag from his head; rather, they just wrapped the body (and the murder weapon) in the second black plastic trash bag. With Alex and Tammy, they had to make the murders look like natural causes;
It is unconscionable that the coroner would rush the autopsies for burial; the coroner may be complicit too-- who knows.
I am 97% sure that these murders were committed with kitchen trash bags and some form of "date" drug as a sedative.
@@markh.harris9271 ... Good theory. We shall see.
@@markh.harris9271 Tammy didn't get an autopsy at all.
@Valarie Parker The family reported pink foam on her mouth. When the body runs out of oxygen it burns sugar; which causes the lungs to bleed. If they had done an autopsy, probably would have found fluid (water) in the paracardium, and blood in the lungs. Asphyxiation. Also, Chad is an acute pathological liar.
Or put on a jighly sedative and pit a bag over her headed yo not be avail to breath while sedated. That their cure for death.
This sounds eerily similar to the cult of Scientology. Although they don't go for the "God" stuff etc, they also believe in "healing in the spiritual realm", "getting rid of spirits" and other weirdo stuff on their upper secretive levels (which cost parishioners upwards of $750,000 to achieve). I was born into the cult and leaving it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life. I lost every single friend I had - including family members - they utterly "shun" you if you leave and in fact will come after you in a terrible way if you dare speak out. "Total disconnection" is the only way you can make it out - including running the risk of losing your children - forever (thank heavens my own children all left with me). I feel for this poor woman - I know what she went through - and I am so glad she escaped. Good for her!
Im proud of you for being strong enough to leave the cult. I hope you are happy and doing well
the definitive quality of a cult is what they do when you leave them...or try to....
@@Lauren-vd4qe - 100% correct. I went through absolute hell when I made the decision to leave. I was branded as a virtual "psychopath" and all my lifelong friends and family members were forced to "disconnect" from me. To this day, I have not seen or spoken to my sister since October 2013. They also tried to force my mom to disconnect from me - she refused - the stress of what they put her through and threatened her with resulted in her dying from pure emotional trauma in 2014. I will NEVER forgive them for that.
This story is like the movie Frailty come to life. It also makes Scientologists look sane and peaceful in comparison.
@JaneyAnimal rescuer P247 - Thank you. I see you know a bit about the loony-bin of it all. The worst part of it all is that it cleverly gets one to "self-brainwash". That is VERY hard to undo. 6 years later, I STILL sometimes find myself thinking like one - and have to consciously "unthink" stuff.
Religious Circle? More like dupes in a murderous con game that Vallow and Daybell were running.
“I feel an enormous amount of shame for staying in a dysfunctional relationship...” No, you left! “... for staying in an unhealthy marriage...” You were brave enough to leave!
I hope you see the other side of this coin. You are incredibly BRAVE!!!!! You left some really hard to leave situations. It’s more comfortable to stay than leave. It’s safer to stay than leave. You are brave! Put that shame away! Never look back!

And Jehovah's Witnesses!!
Jesus has said...there are no 'religions'. Religions are 'man made'. There is only the 'word of God'. God's word is 'love'. Not fear and hate. Jesus has said he was a teacher of the 'word of God'. Not a particular religion. I believe just because Jesus was marked a Jew by 'man' doesn’t make him necessarily a Jew. Following any 'man made' prophecies is going against the 'word of God'. Putting any 'man' on a higher realm even close to God is wrong. Man, for some reason, needs a 'place to belong'. So, man has created all these different religions and big ass churches in order to belong somewhere. Some of these 'men' have personally benefited by speaking out and gathering groups to follow their word. Not necessarily the 'word of God'. These 'men' are often charismatic and are able to get others to follow. There are these type of 'men' in every religion. Through history there have been some 'men' who have risen to such a high status in their group the followers loose site of God. An example is Joseph Smith. The Pope. Jesse Jackson. Jim Jones. L.J. Hubbard. The list is endless. They exist in every organized religion on earth. Some have done good, but most have not. No one has to belong to a 'religion' to believe in God. Following any word other than Gods true word is wrong. Take all the 'rules', which are all 'man made' in the various religions is not following the 'word of God'. Not eating meat on Friday is an example of a 'man made' word. There are millions of these man made rules in the various religions. They are not the 'word of God'. People who follow any word other than the 'word of God' are truly 'sheeple'. These men who get others to follow their word are doing so for other reasons than to spread the word of God. Greed and power. The followers are people who have lost their way and are looking for something or someone to tell them what to do. It is baffling why anyone would follow another man and give that man all their money so that man can become rich and tell you what you can think and do. But it continues to happen. As far back as written history goes, there have been 'men' like this. Is it possible God will come again one day and give earth's people another good thrashing? Definitely. Is it going to be July 2020 as the leaders of this cult in question have claimed? I guess if July comes and goes the answer will be no. 🤦🏻♀️ from what I have read and believe things will get much worse than what is happening now for God to return. Are things on earth getting ugly? Yes, most definitely. I think God is testing us and if we can’t turn things around then he will have no choice but to re-start things again. All he asks of us is to 'love'. Stop fearing and hating. Stop destroying fellow man. Stop destroying earth. Follow the Ten Commandments. Stop false prophesying. Stop following anyone but God.

1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you will know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3and every spirit that does NOT confess Jesus is not from God. Nah, most cults are in big cities like NYC and LA, then spiders outward if they grow at all. There are nuts from all walks of life.
It's the LDS.
@@Docrocks437 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not fit the definition of cult. Look it up for yourself, please. Most of the members across the world (more than 17 million) are converts (just like the Jews who were converts to the Church of Jesus Christ in the Holy Bible (which we LOVE). The early Jewish converts in the Holy Bible who followed the Gospel of Jesus Christ were called Saints. It's very easy to look these things up. Some groups of ppl SAY they're members, but they are NOT. Respectfully, you judge without all the information about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Lori Elizabeth Wade it does indeed follow the definition of a cult. I think most LDS people are very good, some of the best! But the a lot of the beliefs, organization, and doctrines do fit under a cult definition.
-a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing-
@@TheBALLER999999 I will tell you as a convert in 1980 at the age of 19, I became a member. I, like most people, have my spiritual ups and downs. So, I've been an active and non-active member. I can say to you this, we do NOT worship the Prophet nor Joseph Smith Jr. We love and worship our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Just as the Churches located in family homes, etc in the Bible (we use the KJV), those early Saints (all converts) respected the representatives of Jesus Christ, His Apostles. I love the writings of the Apostle Paul. He spoke with authority to say, "if you don't learn the Gospel from me, it is not truth. (paraphrased, of course.) I think he was speaking to the Saints in Corinth. Please feel free to look up what Paul spoke of when a few men of that Church tried to add Gospel doctrines of their own. He was VERY clear in his letter to them NOT to accept ANY other teachings but from HIM. Paul knew of his authority to represent our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Church belongs to Him, and He guides us thru our Apostles thru the Holy Spirit. Hope this helps. God bless you, especially in these difficult times.

Julia Weber... please get away from that. It could have dire consequences, not to mention serious psychological abuse.
These people and their crazy making have absolutely nothing to do with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints just as the interviewer mentioned. They have free agency as any other human being to be "crazy" if they wish to.
Okay I heard this interview and feel like this cult really did pray on vulnerable people. I wonder if Chad ever took life insurance out on any members? It's sad to think people can be so manipulated. Great job on the interviews
Probably. Loris family and xhusband charles.and brotherinlaw melanies x, worked supposedly for the insurance companies.
Watch "Hidden True Crime" with Sharie Dowdle. She will tell you how Chad cheated her out of money for the books that he published and used her near death experience and embellished it into a book.
Chad is the master manipulater in all of this.

I hope they've been in the care of some kind of cult, rather than the calamity we have already imagined.
It kind of makes Lori's smirk seem less heinous, if her kids are just being fostered by some members of their community...while she and the dude partied in Hawaii. ;(

This is a brainwashing thing. Chad & Lori & Alex & the whole shebang of the lds church the uni-bully.
What a smart lady to step away, and now when she says the ideas out loud, she can laugh at the absurdity of it all !
Sadly, I think her laugh is a bit self-deprecating (in a way) still. The interviewer did an excellent job here and when she laughed, he comfortingly told her she didn't have to laugh. They'd obviously had in-depth discussions before this interview - I'm guessing she may have had a say in editing as well, or at least authorizing exactly what bits they could use.
She's struck by the absurdity of how she got sucked into it and nervous laughter came up at moments like this.
I agree she is incredibly brave to speak so openly and honestly about her own experiences when she's obviously still healing - as one would from any abusive relationship.
I also think this will be incredibly valuable for investigators. She may have spoken with them too. It seems likely.

I didn't think he was rude. She was laughing at something she thought was going to sound ridiculous, i.e. she thought _she_ was going to sound ridiculous, and he told her not to laugh at herself.
They'd clearly spoken extensively before she was on camera.
I’m glad she stepped away from this “religion”, however, two things: 1. She doesn’t mention she has found a true Christian following in order to fully come to know the Lord and His saving grace. 2. She fully intends to be present and celebrate with her children as they continue to proceed through this false religion, rather than lead them to come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. I pray she
, personally, comes to this understanding and that she also shares the love of Jesus Christ with her children.
This journalist is just wonderful. It’s been a while since I came a cross such a good interview!

I'm glad she finally came back to reality and how she is speaking about it. I like how she knows she was brainwashed and is laughing about it now.
@THE TRUTH I don't think she is stupid. She sounds very articulate, coherent and intelligent. I have thyroid issues and I know if I was to be taken off my medication, I could be very susceptible to manipulation.
She's a poster boy example of high level suggestability, which makes perfect candidates for hypnosis.

I'm a member in the boondocks of GA. I visited there twice. I never saw tent cities either.
I’m also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I live in Utah and I’d never heard of tent cities either. It has nothing to do with the Church. It’s not a Utah or Idaho thing. It’s a prepper cult thing. Notice these preppers are also often into Energy Healing too.
Dear lady, there is nothing to be ashamed of. We all make mistakes in life because we're all imperfect, nothing wrong with that. As a practicing Mormon I've seen the extent that some people go when they are exposed to this type of material.
Same, I’ve seen it to.
Religion brings out the crazy in many people.
@ I think it's an accurate statement.
Yes, and why would you want your children to remain in an environment that had been so abusive to you?
Lori's beliefs are not a religion, nor do they represent any christian group or practice. They claimed to be religious to get followers, in order to have them give false alibis when the bodies startted falling and polica asking qurstions (insurance money was their religion, no doubt here, anything else was a façade) but only Lori's siblings and Chad were stupid enough to think their ideas had anything spiritual. Any practice that goes against the 10 commandments is false and brings ruin because it lacks spirituality, case in point.
You cannot blame religion. If a person chooses to be a bad person, it's on them alone. They may choose to hide behind Religion, but in the end it is only them incarcerated or in the grave and only that person's spirit that makes it to Hell.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka LDS or Mormon) I can tell you that much of what Chad Daybell & Lori Vallow did and promoted was sick perversions or not even in relation to what LDS members believe. It breaks my heart that people were drawn into following him. After listening to this interview I believe this woman was inadvertently involved in 2 cults. The Daybell group being one and the energy healing being the other. I know of people who have been lured into both of these groups, which do not necessarily overlap beliefs with one another, but both groups have big followings and many people who get involved in these groups that purportedly support the LDS beliefs eventually leave their religion for the extreme beliefs of these other groups/cults.
It’s sad that the church refuses to speak up and say they don’t support these extreme cults.
