Great Lakes Trek Kashmir Itinerary (September 2022): Trek Difficulty & Things to Carry

- One of the most gorgeous treks in India that everyone should do once is the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. The entire trek is 7-8 days long and you gain an elevation of approximately 1,500m in this time.

⛰️ Short Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Sonamarg (2, 730 M) and briefing
Day 2: Sonamarg (2, 730 M) to Nichnai (3, 500 M) trek which takes approximately 8-9 hours
Day 3: Nichnai (3, 505 M) to Vishansar Lake (3, 658 M) via Nichnai Pass (4,150 M) which will take around 8 hours
Day 4: Vishansar Lake (3, 58 M) to Gadsar Lake (3, 810 M) via Gadsar Pass (4, 206 M). This is the longest day and easily takes around 10 hours.
Day 5: Gadsar Lake (3, 810 M) to Satsar Lake (3, 658 M). Shortest day with the trek being only 6-7 hours long.
Day 6: Satsar Lake (3, 658 M) to Gangabal Lake (3, 505 M) takes around 8 hours with a steep ascent in the beginning.
Day 7: Gangabal Lake (3, 505 M) to Naranag (2, 271 M) takes around 5-6 hours with mostly a descent.
What Happens in the Video?
On day 1, we all assembled at Shitkadi campsite and got to know our fellow trek mates and the trek leaders. We learned what to do and what not to do on the trek, a few packing and trekking tips, and more.
Unfortunately, we couldn't start the trek on day 1 due to some technical issue so we went to Thajiwas Glacier instead.
Our Kashmir Great Lakes Trek finally started on 5th September and we reached Nichnai Campsite by 5 PM.
What to Expect on Day 1 of KGL Trek?
The trek is 10 km long on this day and includes the most ascent. It takes around 4-5 hours to reach Table Top (last Maggi Point) which is also close to the midpoint of today's route. The trek to the Table Top is quite steep and turned muddy due to the rain.
From Table Top, it's another 4 hours to the campsite and we stop after an hour for the lunch beside a stream. This part is mostly descents and gradual ascents.
Most people reached the campsite between 4.30 - 5.30 PM after leaving Shitkadi around 7-8 AM.
Few Dos and Don'ts for the Trek
1. If you aren't used to physical activity, avoid carrying a heavy backpack and opt for offloading.
2. Pack minimum and keep your backpack below 6-7 kg.
3. Pack rain gear both for yourself and your backpack as it can rain suddenly.
4. Wear good trekking shoes.
5. Pack thermals and a warm jacket if you tend to feel cold.
6. Pack snacks and a daypack to keep your essentials if you have offloaded your luggage.

Jisko pehle koi experience nhi hai trekking ka wo is trek ko kar sakta hai kya? Koi breathing issues wagera ho sakta hai ?aur fitness k lie kya prepare karke jana chahiye?
Kar sakte hain, breathing ka issue nahi hota but thoda fitness pe dhyaan dena hoga. Roz walk karo ke aapksa speed itna ho ke 4 km 45 mein walk/run karke complete kar sakte ho

I joined one of their tour to KGL back in 2019. The best thing about that trip was the guide Vyashakh himself. I loved the energy of that guy.
Apke maine kashmir series ke sabhi blog dekhe .... Bahut pasand aaye mujhe or aap bahut sweet nd cute ho....haste huye to or bhi piyari lgti ho..... Mein mid August me kashmir ka solo trip plan kar raha hun agar aap mere sath ye trip join karna chahogi to mujhe bahut khushi hogi..... Keep smiling god bless you

Hi, how is the crowd in September? And what was the date you covered?
There were many batches but you usually get quiet spot around the lakes and on the trek so not an issue. I did from 3-10 September

Hi... Is it possible to give cost details of trekking great lek kasmir for 2 or solo trek... As well best time to go... In which month we can watch star all night long? Etc 🙂

It will be slightly difficult to do it solo as you need permits and everything to do the trek so I would recommend you contact a local trek operator to do this trek. 😅

As for stars, that depends on the weather. You might get a clear sky or you might not, there is no guarantee 😅
Did you prepare physical before going on a trek ? If so pls share the schedule
No, I didn’t but I tend to travel a lot. It would be good to walk/run for 1 hour every day for atleast 1-2 months before the trek
