Hey Mike, next time try some low pressure air down the dipstick tube, or vacuum on the turbo feed line or on one of the crankcase oil galleries, oil switch port etc while cranking, the air should help to re-prime the pump or at least drawing a vacuum on the oil line/gallery will help get things going in the right direction👍🇦🇺
just rebuilt one of my 300tdi using plenty of tips from you, I couldn't get oil circulating by tuning engine over by hand , end up overfilling with oil. got the pump working then took the extra oil out
When I lost prime on my oil pump after working on the engine, I poured oil down the oil cooler line that come from the pump, and back filled it. It worked like a charm
I fitted a Turner engine years back and had the same oil issue. Tried everything but no go. Rang turner's and he told me they do that sometimes, he side light here up and should put the light out after 3 or 4 seconds, it did, I was sweating though 😮
I have a Turner rebuilt 300 that has been stood for six and a half years (all the ports and pipes blanked and under a lot of covers). I think that will suffer the same problem, unless they pack the pump with grease like you do. This is the benefit of the 200 and earlier 4cyl engines and their skew gear driven pump - it’s immersed and primes easily.
My dad, a mechanic for years would always flat tow the new car/motor ( spark plugs removed ) in 4 th gear and see the oil light go out before actually starting the motor. I do the same. Just make sure you’ve wired the oil light up properly and your fine!
Mike, haven't had an oil leak on my 300Tdi engine since I got rid of those mechanical vacuum and fuel pumps and converted to electric, mah front diff housing is going rusty...
Mike. Leak is a four letter word - avoid ! Going to fit a new engine oil catch can and a secondary water/fuel separator ? 'Muriel from Malawi' strike eight sir. V.
@@peterjohnson2245 when I rebuilt my 3.5 Range Rover classic engine, I just took out the distributor drive gear and made an adaptor for my drill that rotated the oil pump to flow the oil and build pressure before starting the engine, that worked well.
Bloody hell Mike, you just kept me awake while I was just finishing my last glass of red wine in the very early hours, BUGGER
lol!
SAME HERE TO MATE!
@@BritannicaRestorations very frustrating
bugger...

Ingenious. Well done Mike. 😊👍🏻
Thank you! Cheers!

That would work!
excellent videos Mike , helps half baked mecanics like myself end up with a reasonable repair that works, thanks@@BritannicaRestorations
At least it sounds like it's got some compression!
That's a good thing right? lol!

That will work - I wonder why there was no sort of check valve on the oil pick up?
@@BritannicaRestorations I'd have to say I've never seen a motor with a "foot valve" fitted to the oil pickup pipe, seen a few submerged oil pumps.

Yes - I would not expect they would build the pump with oil

I like to crank them over on the stand or test bench prior to fitting - just in case = I wonder why they didn't fit a check valve in the pick up pipe?
Smoke test, I thought Mike was electing a new Pope.
its white smoke not red smoke lol
Have you tried the PTFE tape they use on gas pipe, it's in a yellow container. It's a bit thicker... Great vlog!
Thanks for the tip!

You didn't touch the timing belt?
I think my neighbor primed his v8's with an electric drill on the distributor shaft.
The drill trick went out with the 3.9 V8's
What's the economics on this? Time/parts vs buying a recon?
There isn't...
Does a 200TDi have the same issue if left sat with no oil for 12months or so? Made me want to get mine turning over now.
No, as the oil pump is in the lowest part of the sump as it shoudl be
@@BritannicaRestorations thats good news, i did remember for v8s packing the pump with vaseline it never occurred to me with this. Well its good news,
