EXACTLY! Seiko is far too big and successful to need to listen to their fanbase. Seiko's market share of casual department store non-collector buyers is so huge that even if every true fan and collector suddenly stopped buying, they would barely notice. We as collectors and fans make up such an incredibly small fraction of their worldwide sales it doesn't make sense for them to even bother to listen to us.

The problem with Seiko is, if at that price they give you sapphire crystal, a lumed bezel, a milled clasp and 200m of water resistance, the watch is going to get a little too close to what they have on top high-end, and it will be even more difficult to justify a premium price for these watches...

I said this years ago. As soon as Seiko adds saphire, solid end links, nice bracelet etc, the price goes through the roof, and the watch isn't even "made in Japan". At those prices I rather get a "Swiss Made" watch.

The problem with Seiko is that all the negative things you pointed out are absolutely true, but despite that their watches are still so much better looking than most of the microbrands and Citizen watches that are beating them on the spec sheets. Seiko Just know how to make great looking watches, that despite all their issues still makes me want to own them. As a long time Seiko fan I wish they could get their shit together.

Honestly, the specs are fine. 100M WR is plenty. Hardlex vs Sapphire? Whatever. Pressed clasp? It’s not going to fall off of your wrist as evidenced by vintage and neo-vintage Rolex. Caller vs Flyer GMT? Meh. It shows a 2nd timezone. If you want one that’s aligned, go to an AD to try one on.
The bottom line is if you like the design and fit. It’s priced low enough that you could buy it for that reason alone.
Personally, I don’t need a GMT that looks like a dive watch. What are you checking another timezone at 200 meters? Let’s see some new designs that reflect the actual use case of a GMT.

Agreed Chris. I own the Mikan orange, “Made in Japan” printed at 6, no issues luckily, and really comfortable bracelet case combo for my wrist, haven’t found another orange reference in that price range that comes close, got an 001 from same dealer, “Mvmt Japan” printed on dial, and had QC issues, returned it and tried again from same dealer asking for the made in Japan version, and got it with no issues. The QC issues are disappointing and even for a Seiko fan, is a big detractor having to wonder I your watch is going to be a good one or not. The lume on these are really good, so good it makes you notice that a lumed bezel would have made up a bit for the pressed clasp and lack of crystal. My Mikan is amazingly accurate. Thank you for all your great content, your genuine love of watches is infectious, I have purchased a few watches from you on whatnot.

People continue to misunderstand in the watch community that a microbrand can never compete with a big name quality watchmaker. Microbrands sell their products typically for less money or with seemingly “improved” features yet they don’t have the volume purchasing that establish brands have. Although it may be the same movement inside the watch many parameters have been cut in quality and performance and durability to accommodate. It’s simple arithmetic and there is no exclusion.

That is the problem isn't it. Other brands taking Seiko movements and making better watches at a cheaper price. I guess at the moment, that isn't a problem for Seiko. Seiko's QC issues are SO frustrating. While I don't think they need 200m WR, I'd love to see a "King" version with sapphire and 200m WR. I don't think we'll see that due to market segmentation with the Seiko 5 line though. One thing I think some of those other competitors at the price are lacking is the X-factor. That classic design and the really cool bezel on these just look SO good. Brands like the Jack Mason with their Strat-o-timer GMT uses the 9075 mentioned and have looks and the specs, but they are literally double the retail price. I concur that they are not worth $475. Heck, I paid $434 for my King Turtle on a Father's Day sale and that's about right for that watch. It's a great watch, but not at the MSRP. The Traska Venturer also has the 9075 for a closer $695 with amazing specs, but that's still a large leap in price, especially since they're easy to get new for ~$350. While an excellent design in its own right, I don't think that watch has quite the X-factor of the Seiko. Both alternates mentioned are excellent in the

The reason microbrands can give you the same movement and upgrades elsewhere at the same price is because they aren’t putting the same money into research and development, distribution or marketing. Just buy the movement Seiko developed and sell their watch direct to consumers on their website. These also don’t cost $500 anymore as you acknowledge later in the video. Too many people jump all over hyped watches when they come out, pay MSRP or over for it, then complain they didn’t get their money’s worth. I got mine new for $325 just by being patient, a price point where the downsides are justifiable. Can’t justify the QC issues, just lucky not to have had them.

You wear a spec or a watch on your wrist? I don't like microbrands, because most of them only hommage-ing (faking..) other watches. Seiko's price including an AD where you can see the watch on your wrist ad a warranty, if you have a problem with your watch, just go to your AD and he/she can repair your watch under warranty for free. It costs many for you when you buying anything. And the last thing: reselling. If you would like (or have) to resell a watch, you easily can sell a Seiko and give back the biggest part of the price. And there are many Seiko for a good price in mint condition with warranty from second hand. Choose them, and the price/watch ratio will be even better.

No wonder homage watches are so popular. They’ll fit that movement into a watch that has a sapphire crystal, screw down crown (signed). Milled clasp, click bi directional bezel and probably 200 metres of water resistance for half the price. That said Seiko do design fantastic looking watches and this is certainly a looker. It’s just they cut corners with the fundamentals and QC issues. Imagine if they made the watch with the above.

I have quite a few Seiko, and I have some micro brands and they each have their virtues. The micros can sometimes outcompete comparable Seikos on specs, but then again who knows if the brand will even be around in 5 years. Seiko has a long history and is not going anywhere. But even if it did, people will still recognize Seiko 20 years from now. And finally, they are modable (more so than almost any other brand) so there is that.
While the Seiko is no spec monster for the price, its designs are attractive and highly recognizable. Sure you can get a knockoff for a little less, maybe, but then you are walking around wearing a Chinese made knockoff. Where is the pride of ownership in that?
As for the SSK, I like it. I might be a customer when they start getting discounted just as I was with the SRPE, which I got for about 50% off retail. At around $150 I think that is a fantastic every day watch that looks way more expensive than the price I paid for it.
I fully anticipate the SSK will drop in price over time. Willing to bet new ones will be selling for $300 and used ones will be selling for around $200 by next year. And when that happens, I might be a customer. Or maybe I will wait for Seiko to introduce a Prospex version of this watch, though again, that will probably debut for much more money, and again, it will take a couple of years for the prices to come down.

5:16 the problem isn't the movement; the movement's great. The problem's much more the rest of your point. It's that Seiko used poorer materials and asked $500 for the watch. Had they just used sapphire over hardlex, there'd be many fewer complaints (that, and their many alignment issues are really inexcusable). I own seikos that cost around the same and less than this that have sapphire crystals. Either way, the watch does look great, and I still believe they made this more as a showcase (and selling piece) for their gmt movement than anything else.
