The Seiko SSK GMT Proves That A CALLER GMT Can Better Than A "TRUE" GMT (Defining All The GMT Terms)

2022 was a huge year for GMT watches with the release of the Tudor Black Bay Pro, the Seiko SSK GMT, and the 4R34 movement inside of the Seiko. So as a diehard fan of GMT watches and of the Seiko SKX I knew I had to get the SSK001 GMT. The main “issue” that people have with more affordable GMT movements from the likes of ETA, Sellita, and now Seiko, is that they “aren’t real GMTs” like their more expensive counterparts from the like of Rolex, Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko, and more.
So in this video I’m going to define the different terms that surround the “real vs not real” GMT debate, and then I’ll go over my experiences with the SSK GMT now that I’ve owned it for over 6 months. Finally, I’ll see for myself if it is possible to actually travel with this supposed “not real” GMT movement. Spoiler alert: it is entirely possible. (And actually I prefer it in general)

I don’t get all the fuss about “true GMT” vs “caller GMT” - personally I would prefer a caller GMT. I rarely travel to different time zones, but I do have business contacts in other time zones, so that would be significantly more useful for me. 🤷♂️
Nice to hear that there are others who think the same as me! The two gmt movements are exactly that. Just two different kinds of gmt movements!
My citizen Nighthawk gets the job done
Its the usage. Clearly the caller/office GMT would work on your because you rarely travel. But if you are a in a profession requires you to travel to a lot in places with different timezone it is much easier to use the True GMT because you can just adjust the hour hand only while leaving the GMT hand to your permanent residence timezone. No, snubbery just practical uses there. 🤷♂
I recently ordered the SSK003 GMT from my local jeweler about a week ago . I’m anxiously and patiently waiting for it to arrive. I’m super excited to have this watch on my wrist soon 👍🏻

For years I lusted after a flyer GMT and considered my caller GMT annoying/inferior for travel (until it broke). When I got my BB Pro I loved it for everyday wear and travel, but found it less convenient when I was at home and trying to track family abroad. So then I got an SSK, which is a lot of fun and great for tracking others abroad. Both have advantages, for sure! And more GMTs is always more betterer 😂
Hope you enjoyed your first post virus flight. We will be on our first flight since February 2020 , this time going to Antalya in Southern Turkey. My normal go to travel watch is a cheap Casio Royale World Timer which is without doubt THE best travel watch you can get. But I do have an "office" GMT and you're right, there is truly no practical difference between the two types.
Thanks for the video! I didn't realize changing the date on a Traveler GMT was that much of a chore. I own the Seiko GMT and had no problems using the GMT hand as the local time when I traveled out of the country. It's a great watch! Enough with the Traveler GMT Snobbery. :)
Real life tests are worth the most ! I always worry about my watches when going through the X-ray scanner. Ive had them get magnetized quite often during the safety check, so a GMT would always need high magnetic resistance imo.
Yeah for sure, it was fun actually using a gmt watch for its intended purpose! Yeah security machines always worry me but thankfully i havent had any issues with any of my watches so hopefully that can continue on!
Wow. You're very unlucky. I have travelled countless times for business and have never had a watch get magnetized in the x-ray scanner. The scanners have an extremely weak gauss value, and do not affect modern automatic watches. However if you were wearing something like a vintage watch that has no anti magnetic properties you could have a problem for sure. I did have a 1958 Avia Swiss handwound that I had to demagnetize after a trip, it went absolutely crazy, you could see the minute hand moving around, was running 3 minutes fast every hour! LOL. Millions of mechanical watches travel through airport scanners every day with no ill effects. Try to travel only with your newer watches!

I recently took a trip and brought my Christopher Ward C65 Trident GMT, and it was not an issue at all changing times. Change the main hand to current local, change GMT hand to home time, done.

As a pilot I’ve always had a caller gmt with an inner 24hr chapter ring. That way I can set the gmt hand to “UTC/GMT” then just rotate the bezel to the zone I’ve landed in. Much easier than pulling the crown out etc etc.
Agree. Traveling with a caller GMT is not hard. I’m not sure why people claim to have a hard time with it.
lol I'm not sure either, at the end of the day, most people travel with time only watches and still make it through their trip alive, so any sort of gmt function is just a bonus!

Awesome BOR bracelet! One feature that's quite nice is that there's a 24 hour chapter ring. Don't know why so few GMTs have them. With this watch I might not even bother setting the local time since I could just rotate the bezel while the chapter ring shows home time.
Great Review. Just got my Seiko SKX GMT and I couldn’t be happier. The watch looks amazing and fits super well even on my short wrist. The only thing I want to ask you: Why do you wear your watch that loosely?

My experience is that both the traveler's and the caller's GMT are a bit too limited to be convenient when traveling, and they can't deal with odd time zones either (e.g. India, Adelaide, Newfoundland). I'm using a Casio Oceanus these days, I'll may sell my 'true' GMT because I don't wear it much.

Another great video TWI. I can't quite get my head round people saying that you need a 'true' GMT or any other type of GMT for that matter. We travelled to different time zones before a GMT was popular. We could just wear a dual time G-Shock (some of the connected ones allow you to switch between the zones via the app). Anyway I digress. If there is one thing that can bug me about most GMTs as you mention is that they only cover full hour increments (I've often had calls in places that are N+- 0.5 hours). If you have the rotating bezel that is a friction set then you have any option you like and that's a plus for the Seiko. The Tudor BB GMT does have a 48 click bezel so is adjustable in steps of 0.5 hour. Something that the BB Pro does not. Many thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much as always! Yeah looking down on anything in the watch world is bizarre to me especially in the case of GMTs since they each have their own purpose! And like you said, we've been crossing time zones before the "true gmt" was created and millions of people do just fine without it lol! I almost forgot that the sliding bezel of the SSK can be used for additional timezone increments! For me its just nice for timing lol! If only the BB Pro would have been perfect if it had at least some sort of a rotatable bezel!
@@thewatchidiot I have to agree, the BB Pro would have been a better tool GMT if the bezel rotated. For me though I love the smooth outer bezel , the sunburst brushing, 39mm, T-Fit clasp and it's just so comfortable. It just works for me. If I 'need' the extra 0.5 hour I just wear the BB GMT but it's just no where near as comfortable as the BB Pro not that the GMT is uncomfortable though.
For short term travel, e,g, Hong Kong Japan Taiwan trip, SSk003 is take a simple job on them. The long distance trip like, Hong Kong to Augstroa , Then, Temsee. Go back the Hong Kong. A True GMT working fine. GMT hand point to the home time GMT +8, no change, Than at each please just adjust the hour hand match to local time is done.
So easy.

So things actually changed from my watch roll video (as expected lol!) but it was the Pelagos, SSK GMT, SPB313 Slim turtle, and Apple Watch Ultra but before i was leaving i couldnt not take my new captain willard ice diver, and then i really felt like taking my San Martin 62MAS as well so definitely more than i needed considering the pelagos would have been enough! and thanks for the support, glad you enjoyed the video!

I travel with a Baltic SB01. 12hr bezels are the shit.
The obsession with ‘true’ GMTs is simply because they were ‘unaffordable’ for so long. Just a bit of old fashioned snobbery really. Once they are common place in $500 watches (it’s coming) the silly arguments will end - and ironically most people will realise the caller GMT suits their needs sooooo much better in reality (as TWI stated). Jumping hour hands are pretty much only advantageous if you are travelling across multiple time zones on a regular basis (so pilots / crazy business travellers / and billionaires with houses in 4 continents).
It’s a useful complication the GmT in a global world - way more so than a mechanical chronograph for example.
I would just take a cheap quartz watch to show home time and wear another watch to show local time.
Just do the 'Buzz Aldrin' double on a nato 😂
Changing the date on „true GMT” is a deal breaker. Whoever tries to justify this mechanic as expensive and superior must have hit his head hard as a child.
I think it's great value for the price. But mine has been back to Seiko twice with a frozen bezel. Bought it to travel and my first 2 trips it was at Seiko under warranty and I didn't have it. Super frustrating and Seiko's customer service sucks, totally impossible to get a response from them.
I think traveller's GMT is more convenient for super Travellers...

I cant imagine if you're flying that you wouldnt have enough time to set your watch. After the plane lands it's gonna take a minimum of five minutes to get off the plane (that's being unrealistically conservative). You could easily switch your local time and gmt time on your watch in those few minutes
Where the Seiko falls short is that the bezel isn't fully lumed. In this day and age.......
Yeah a fully lumed bezel would have been so good, it really should be the standard throughout!
Steeldive, one of the better “clone”…uhhh…”homage” makers has the Type 1992, based on the same Seiko movement with a nicely lumed bezel.

The caller GMT works better for my use, hence to me it is the “real” GMT
I prefer the GMT flyer for my travels. Much easier to change the time, no doubt. That's why I love my Explorer II
Yeah, adding or subtracting single or small double digit numbers is so challenging that it's really important to have a GMT😅..
Some people have a hard time doing simple addition and subtraction. They would rather buy into this new GMT scam that is currently circulating on the watch reviews,
say tarnish one more time!

Definitely prefer a flyer GMT. It is a far more elegant solution than a caller gmt when hopping multiple time zones in a day. 24hr hand always set to zulu time, hour hand set to local, and then you can check the time anywhere else in the world with a rotating bezel by applying the +-zulu conversion.
It's called true GMT because it's full form is treaval GMT.
The term "True GMT" is ridiculous, its a marketing term which implies other GMTs are "fake". A flyer or travel GMT is more accurate. "True" feels like an attempt by marketers to put down other movements for no reason. Very declasse and underhanded. I actually prefer caller GMTs, easier to change the date and the movement would have less complexity, meaning its thinner.
