Seseme Street was way ahead of its time when it came to tolerating, accepting and respecting different people with all different kinds of dissibilities. Short films like this proved it.
What I like about this little film is the fact that this boy is interacting with other kids, and not letting his disability stop him from doing the things that he enjoys doing. That was the really cool thing about "Old-School" Sesame Street. Thanks for bringing back these good memories.
Yep, that's what I like a lot too. He's enjoying all sorts of activities with his peers. A very healthy and important thing for all to do and all the more so for those with greater challenges.
A beautiful day. He gets out in his chair and plays with his friends, one of them walks him home afterwards and he's in the door safely. Disabilities don't have to keep anyone from enjoying life.
I remember watching this segment as a child in the 80's, thinking it was kinda cool what the kid could do, and that the song was kinda sweet. I now have a son who uses a wheelchair, so now this video REALLY hits home. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks for posting. I hadn’t seen this in years and quite frankly had forgotten about it, but watching this and the words just came right back and flooded my brain with happy memories. Thanks again.
The last time I saw this, I was like 4 or 5 and had no understanding of why people needed wheelchairs. I wanted to be in a wheelchair just so I could do all of the cool things this kid did. Now, at 31 years old, I obviously have a greater understanding of why some people need wheelchairs, a great respect for the courage and strength these people demonstrate, and a respect for Sesame Street in honoring diversity and adversity. This brought back memories!
I wasn't aware of the existence of the more recent one until I checked disc two (which I hadn't checked out in two years of owning the set since it was way past my era) of 40 years of Sunny Days two days ago. This one is much better because there's something about that animated TJ kid that pisses me off plus this is more realistic. It also kinda reminds me of the theme from Welcome Back Kotter.
I remember being jealous of the boy here because he could balance on two wheels and I couldn't do that in my wheelchair. Its an awesome awesome video; far superior to the newer animated version
I just now realized that this song is a happy one about all the things you can still do despite being in a wheelchair. When I used to see this clip on SS growind up it would make me sooo sad seeing that the little boy couldnt walk. Apparently, I never realized it was supposed to be a happy song. Still makes me a little sad. Ahh, memories.
It did indeed get in the next Old School boxset and I'm glad because that was my particular era, that volume. But does this song remind anybody else of the Welcome Back, Kotter theme or is it just me?
I've thought about that too. I wouldn't be surprised if she did at one point. It was around that time that remakes were becoming a regular thing on Sesame Street.
Really neat video, Little guy doesn't let his handicap stop him from living life to the fullest. Inspiring. The tune is awesome, couldn't help smiling watching this.
In the beginning and end of this skit, the boy on the wheelchair was wearing a hat and a jacket (I wonder why on a hot day) but, in the middle of the skit he wasn't wearing either one. I wonder where he put his hat and jacket since they were not sitting on the wheelchair and his friend wasn't carrying either one of them, especially since the boy and his friend kept walking and they couldn't of left them sitting on the ground somewhere and then picked them up at the end of the day.
Although it wasn't until after I stopped watching Sesame Street, I happened to know there used to be a wheelchair bound girl named Tarah on the show. Does anyone know if she ever sang this song? It sure would have been appropriate.
i think this is one of the videos that teaches people can be handicaped and still get around on their own and makes it easier for everybody to understand. A good leasson, it is similar to another old film of two boys flying a kite only this one has to do with handicaped and able bodied people.
When I saw this skit when I was very young, I thought the boy and his wheelchair were flying up in the sky at 1:37 since it looked like at 1:37 that the kite was pulling him and his wheelchair up in the sky.
Can anybody tell me what became of these two boys. I remember watching this and thinking that the normal boy is so awesome that he threats his friend like an equal. Hope they are having wonderful lives.
Good news. I just found out today that a third volume of Old School Sesame Street will be released in November. It will cover seasons 11-15, and if they do it the same way they did the two previous ones, then this will indeed be on it, because it was part of the season 14 premiere.
Another clip from my childhood! It was on one episode I had on a recorded VHS and I'm certain one other before that, I just can't remember which it was. I may have to Google the old episodes in order to find out.
a poem by me this is a song of a boy and his wheelchair for some birds have feathers, and some people have hair so sit back, relax and enjoy the show and i'm coming back and please don't go!
It seems that a lot of people are finding fault with the way that "Sesame Street" is these days. I agree that is was much better once upon a time! Who knows, maybe it will improve again some day!
I agree with cutesypoo...so many of us take things for granted, and the animated Action Jackson version....really doesn't do justice. I wish kids today could see this.
Since elevators are also used to make buildings with two floors wheelchair accessible, how come no Sesame Street material that portrayed elevators has ever mentioned that elevators are also used for wheelchair access purpose?
video was made in the 70's pre-ADA when buildings with more than one floor did not have to have elevators. ADA was passed in 1990, well after this video was made. Actually, when this video was made only k-12 schools and federal buildings 'had' to let him in.....and that was it
Ernie, & Cookie M. Oscar The Grouch, The Count, & Grover, & Big Bird! Plus Granny Bird/Bob! Susan/Gordon/Maria/Luis! Plus Mr. Hooper/ Snuffy L. Upagas & his Sis Alice L. Betty Lou Prairie D/Herry M.
Maybe wheelchairs weren't built for durability or customized during this era because they were viewed as temporary solutions, and it was normal for people who might need them in order to venture out into the world to be institutionalized instead.
@Amithrius I agree. I do hope that Sesame Street will eventually revert itself to the meaningful type that it was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, teaching kids humane things. It would be nice if it would have sketches on autism or even child or sexual abuse.
Individuals in wheelchairs shouldn't have to isolate themselves from everyday life. It's not being in wheelchairs that defines them but rather what they become by allowing it to dictate their lives.
I loved the sesame street thing of TJ when I was 9 I will tell you something about how I liked it I was watching Sesame Street on my tablet and I looked at the tj moment of when they were counting to 40s by 10s I loved Danny’s look he’s been in that one thing I wish I would see home more than once I wonder who voiced it and I had a happy dream of when tj and his friends were playing in the snow and I loved 🥰 it that wasn’t the first thing I watched the first thing I watched was the i imagine moment
I'm not going to say the computer-animated remake is bad--it's cute and all---but it was just unnecessary. There was no reason to do it. But if they HAD to remake it, which I could sort of understand because the kids' clothing is very 70s, then just find some other wheelchair-bound kid and shoot new footage. There was no reason to animate it, and there ESPECIALLY was no need to rescore it. The new music isn't as memorable or heartfelt as this.
Also, does anyone know where this is? I'm sure it isn't New York. Whenever a Sesame Street segment comes from somewhere other than NYC, it's sort of a novelty.
Hey, how did you know this is 1982? I'm curious because with few exceptions, it's very difficult to determine what year anything in Sesame Street's enormous backlog originated, beyond generalities like "late '70s."
You KNOW President "People with disabilities are nothing but a big joke & exist solely for my entertainment & for me to make fun of/mimic/mock" is going to have this banned from all forms of social media in no time at all!!!!!
Seseme Street was way ahead of its time when it came to tolerating, accepting and respecting different people with all different kinds of dissibilities. Short films like this proved it.
Nothing on television is more wonderful and beautifully educational than the OLD Sesame Street. The lack of it makes me want to cry.
What I like about this little film is the fact that this boy is interacting with other kids, and not letting his disability stop him from doing the things that he enjoys doing. That was the really cool thing about "Old-School" Sesame Street. Thanks for bringing back these good memories.

my first experience of empathy was watching this..love this song
This songs makes me cry for some reason...I love this so much
This brings back so much childhood memories i can cry :( i love you up-loader ...
Having a classic sesame street marathon, brings back innocent childhood memories when you had no troubles or worries.
A beautiful day. He gets out in his chair and plays with his friends, one of them walks him home afterwards and he's in the door safely. Disabilities don't have to keep anyone from enjoying life.

i finally found it. this is one of those vids that really stuck with me. Our children today are missing this education.
Same here!
I was searching for this song FOREVER. Thanks so much for posting...it brings back so many fond memories.
I remember this! Makes me cry at how old i've gotten.
Same here, I’m 41 now! Time sure flies by
Me too, I'm 43 now and have not seen this since I was so little
This is such an amazing song. It manages to be hopeful, joyful, and melancholy at the same time. Peace.
Thank you for sharing this. I used a wheelchair when I was little, but now I can walk everywhere.
Thanks for posting. I hadn’t seen this in years and quite frankly had forgotten about it, but watching this and the words just came right back and flooded my brain with happy memories. Thanks again.

This sounds like Randy Newman who sang "You've Got A Friend In Me"
What a beautiful song! The message that being handicapped doesn't necessarily mean helplessness is clearly stated. Such a feel good song too.
God bless u for uploading this.

Oh yes! I forgot this gem! Lovely song!
Old school Sesame Street is the ONLY Sesame Street
Absolutely right 👍🏿
The live we on 2004
It is sung by the amazing David Archibald.
I love this it helped me to learn more about ppl with disabilities
This is better than the Trackson Jackson version! I LOVE IT!!!!!
pbscraze Well.... I think BOTH are a-okay 👌
WAY better!!!

There are a few song that take me back to a child in memory..
I remember seeing this at age 3 and asking my mother to get me a wheelchair.
It did indeed get in the next Old School boxset and I'm glad because that was my particular era, that volume. But does this song remind anybody else of the Welcome Back, Kotter theme or is it just me?
ChrisC11291980 I swear even before I read your comment I was thinking the very same thing!!!! Lol!
So it's not just me.
It might be the same singer as welcome back kotter theme song
Lesley Woods Could be but the melody is similar too.
I'm so grateful that I was part of such caring generation and such an innocent point in time in television .
I've been looking for this clip! Thank you for posting! :)
I have been looking for this for a long time! I remember watching this when I was about 2-3 years old! thanks so much for posting this
The old Sesame Street is the absolute best!! Before Elmo ruined everything 😒😒
I've thought about that too. I wouldn't be surprised if she did at one point. It was around that time that remakes were becoming a regular thing on Sesame Street.

Wheelchair bound people are special.
Bernie Sanders Mittens meme is why I’m here! Lol

It sounds VERY similar to him! Doesn’t it?

Definitely ahead of its time with promotion of acceptance and compassion
IMO, this is more catchy than the crappy 35th anniversary version

But I Think That Original Version of Me & My Chair Should Have The 1978 Big Bird Edition!
It seems that a lot of people are finding fault with the way that "Sesame Street" is these days. I agree that is was much better once upon a time! Who knows, maybe it will improve again some day!
My friend Michael Polot who passed away is a wheelchair, everytime I watch this it reminds me of him
I LOVE WHEELCHAIRS! :-D
I love this song!
We all feel so lonesome without the old sesame Street.
I agree with cutesypoo...so many of us take things for granted, and the animated Action Jackson version....really doesn't do justice. I wish kids today could see this.
i showed this vid to a friend in a wheelchair and she got upset!....But i like it and appreciate it for what its worth though!
The boy on the wheelchair is sooo cute!

The one i remember is the one sung by Traction Jackson
This is Randy Newman singing in here. The song is called "Me and my chair"
I didn't know that was Randy Newman singing this. His voice is very recognizable.
Actually, the actual singer is David Archibald, whom also co-composed the song with Luis Santeiro.
@jett woodward I really don't know.
Ernie, & Cookie M. Oscar The Grouch, The Count, & Grover, & Big Bird! Plus Granny Bird/Bob! Susan/Gordon/Maria/Luis! Plus Mr. Hooper/ Snuffy L. Upagas & his Sis Alice L. Betty Lou Prairie D/Herry M.
Ah yes, such a classic!
Wow! It's sounds like Randy Newman singin'.
Maybe wheelchairs weren't built for durability or customized during this era because they were viewed as temporary solutions, and it was normal for people who might need them in order to venture out into the world to be institutionalized instead.
0:35 Beatles' Abbey Road cover reference
This is alot better than the new version!
@Amithrius

I remember this…it reminds me of my friend teddy neigh who is in a wheelchair
Hi, all. Thanks for the nice comments. I remember this day like it was yesterday.
@JGCooney
It first aired November 22, 1982.
Individuals in wheelchairs shouldn't have to isolate themselves from everyday life. It's not being in wheelchairs that defines them but rather what they become by allowing it to dictate their lives.
The next set will be from 1979-1984. This sketch is from 1982, so its eligible. I'm also hoping to see the Mr. Hooper death episode in the set.
He’s got a spiffy hat too!
So That Means Snuffy L. Upagas! & His Sis Alice L. U.!
This is Randy Newman
Is this John Sebastian singing?
Who's the guy singing this?
David Archibald
@@Lbree1077 (Just asking) you have proof?
@@DakariKingMykan yes I do
I always thought it was John Sebastian!
I think the gentleman sang elbows and knees
+Roger Daisley Is that Randy Newman singing?

Really, wow, I thought it was Randy Newman. Either way this song is awesome!
Who's Singing That Song?
I'm 43 d sTill like to watch
I think this is Randy Newman on vocals
Awesome video! I remember watching this when I was a kid. Thanks to jonnytbirdzback for posting it.

@DakariKingMykan it sounds like John Sebastian
Who sings this song?
It sounds like Randy Neumann
Ramachadras his name is David Archibald I just found out.
What year it camed out on sesame street!

It was joe the one sing me and my chair
Yeah. Who needs Traction Jackson when you have Joe Raposo?
The man singing this song sounds just like John Sebastian who sang the theme to "Welcome Back, Kotter" doesn't it?
