  • In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 1977 Cadillac Sedan Deville. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

    These are some of the most reliable cars on the planet. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and my late father drove one of these. Hell of a car.

    They drive like a dream. I do appreciate (and have owned ) the pre-1977 behemoths, but these cars were a big leap forward...especially in handling and utilization of space.

    I have to say that this is one of the best color combinations I've ever seen on a Cadillac from this time period!
    I've always been a fan of the '77-79 DeVille, but especially the '77 since this tail-light style was only available for that year. I had an early 80s Coupe DeVille and always thought those rear lights were gonna get crunched! 'Wouldn't be as easy for them to get mangled with this setup! Makes a lot more sense for the lower half to be 'part' of the bumper, you know?

    That car has a couple of the same issues that my 79 had. The missing emblem over the trunk lock and the loose control panel on the driver's door. My brothers and I bought our Mom the 79 in 1989 and she passed in 91. I took the car and figured I'd drive it til something major went wrong. I had it til 2005 and drove it 175k miles!! Those cars ran and ran! Still ran great when I traded it in back in '05! Rear end was going out though! (for second time) Miss that car though! Kept the hood ornament!

      +George Washington I traded it in on a GMC pick-up. They gave me 400.00 for it. The engine had almost 300k on it and still ran smooth and quiet! Sort of wish I'd kept and restored it.

    • @Hearsesrock427
      @Hearsesrock427 7 років тому

      Yeah the rear ends on the box chevies (the RWD C/D bodies were just stretched box B bodies) were pretty bad. 3rd and 4th gen Fbody rear ends sucked ass too.... aftermarket can help with new axles, differentials, and final drives. But expect to pay for high quality parts. That's the main reason why I didn't take on one of these as my very first project car. They're very upgradable otherwise though. Remember this is just an enlongated box chevy so all the suspension and brake upgrades bolt right up!

    Very unusual colour , haven't seen many in that gold/green metallic before. Be funny if they colour keyed the interior aswell Lol. Crackin motors you just don't see any over here in Britain only collectors have em, and I agree with others this is an era of motoring that we'll most likely not see again with all that environmental stuff goin on, and those big V8s sound fab, just so quiet you'd never know it had a big engine, can't drive myself I'm partially-sighted but if I could I'd want one a these, even though older American cars weren't always the most sophisticated who cares they're different from anything else and that's what makes them great.

    Takes me back to Cadillac number two in my life -- a Sedan DeVille in a light pastel green with contrasting darker green top and interior and the same wheel covers that was even cleaner than this. No loud muffler installed, however. Traded in my first Caddy, a 77 Coupe DeVille in the same color combo for it in the Summer of 1990. No 8-track in either of my 77's, tho.

    My grandparents had a brand new, sky-blue, 1977 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. I was only 5-6yo & remember going w/them to see the "The Outlaw Josey Wales" at the local theater. It was a 9:30 showing & I feel asleep during the movie. After the show my grandmother carried me to the car. It was very dark & hard to see & when trying to enter that car, my grandparents noticed that it seemed "lower" then when the exited it. That is when they noticed the cinder blocks & all 4 tires gone/stolen. LOL.

    • @TurboDiesel-zf8ph
      @TurboDiesel-zf8ph 7 років тому +10

      James Batchelor the emperor is based on a late 80s Cadillac brougham

    • @Sedan57Chevy
      @Sedan57Chevy 7 років тому +6

      I'd argue that it's closer to the '77-'79 cars. The Deville/Fleetwood line was updated in 1980 with a 'taller' front end & grille, which persisted through the 80s as the Brougham (before ending in 1992). The car in the game's performance is definitely closer to a late 80s Brougham with its 140HP 5.0l Olds V8, but styling-wise the car's roofline (look at the rear pillar and the fixed section just before the pillar, which is slanted forward like the '77-'79, while the brougham had an upright glass pannel there), along with having the 'shorter' grille from this first 'iteration' of the '77-'92 generation of body-on-frame Cadillacs. Even the dashboard is clearly inspired by the late-70s models with large controls set into a fake-wood dash (also takes some inspiration from a late 70s/early 80s Pontiac). The only major difference would be the shape of the trunk lid.
      Still, very close either way: it's basically just the same car, minus a different engine and a few minor cosmetic changes. The car in game isn't an exact replica of either, but I've always felt that it was closer to these early model years of this generation, rather than the more recent Brougham models.

    If I were to take on any downsized GM RWD platform car as project it'd be a '78-'81 DeVille or '78-'79 Fleetwood. Don't l]ike the '77 style taillights, though I'm sure the '78+ style is easily swapped in on cars that fall outside the years I specified. The DeVille in this video definitely needs some maintenance but it's all there. Doors and rockers panels look solid too. Good candidate for a pro touring build!

    I noticed a rust patina on the undersides, the rest of the body looks nice. Saw N. Carolina plates on the Cadillac. I asked the North Carolina DMV if they salt the roads and they said yes. How problematic is the road salt amount in relation to rust on the N. Carolina cars compared to say, Wisconsin, etc? Do the panels rust out much in N. Carolina?

      If that's so, why were 425 and the 368 V8s and Turbo 400 transmissions so long-lasting and reliable? LAst year for a proper Cadillac big block in these cars was '81. From '82-'89 you were saddled with HT4100 junk. THOSE are lucky to crack 100,000 with propr care. Whereas the 368, 425, 429, 472, 500, etc. Big blocks were very reliable- not at all uncommon to see them pushing 300,000+ miles if taken care of. Course if you weren't careful the body and frames of these cars would rust right out, much like the Ford panther platform cars. All the trim on these cars does is add weight and trap water. If there's no weatherstripping glued/bolted behind it, pull that shit off! Unless you like seeing doors, rockers, and fenders rust out. Ditch the vinyl tops too, once those go bad they'll rust out the C pillars behind the trim and anywhere else water can collect!
      Of course there's more room for improvement on these cars. Like the box B bodies ('77-'90), the braking and handling isn't fantastic by today's standards. Even F41 package/handling package cars aren't the greatest if you want to go really really fast. Find some lightweight 16 inch wheels that are compatible with the bolt pattern, backspacing, offset, etc. And run sticky 255/50/R16 summer tires at all four corners. That's half the battle right there. With these 16 inch wheels you can run wider tires than the 14s and 15s these cars came with. You also will clear most aftermarket big brake kits! Since you're there, just go to town on the rest of the chassis/suspension.
      Why do I say this? After all, the Cadillacs and other bigger GM cars in the '77-'92 or so downsized generation have different frames! But they were all based initially on the plain old B body. They just stretched it, both overall length and wheelbase. It was the same story at FoMoCo with the panthers from '79-'02.... the same upgraded aftermarket shocks, springs, and big brake upgrades fit all '79-'02 panthers. (Now there are some differences as you move further down the production run- most notably in the rear end. In '92 you got wider rear track, a pretty good sized disc brake setup, and a new sway bar design. This setup will bolt up to the older cars- if you swap in the full rear end assembly- you'll probably need to run new lines, as well as move the parking brake cables and such around, but it will all physically bolt up. The rear end design changed again in '98- these are not backwards compatible into the older cars. Things are better at the front- the control arm design changed in '92, then again in '00 if I recall correctly. These are backwards compatible into the older cars- my '89 Grand Marquis is running '02 P71 front control arms with polyurethane bushings.)
      Anyway, so now we know you can easily upgrade the RWD C/D body cars from '77 to at least '92 with parts made for the '77-'90 box B body cars. Go all in, with massive 6 piston Wilwood disc brakes up front, 2 piston discs out back. Run new stainless steel brake lines, replace master cylinder and booster. Throw on some hotchkis control arms (front and rear!), hotchkis sway bars, and so on. Check the rest of the suspension wear items and look for improved replacement parts for stuff that needs to replaced. Replace rubber bushings with polyurethane wherever possible. Get a proper alignment to optimize your new setup. Replace rubber body mounts with polyurethane body mounts. Combined with the sticky 255/50/R16 tires I mentioned earlier, you should see a big difference in cornering, braking, and acceleration.
      Let's talk engine and transmission since we're here. I don't think the downsized B & C bodies got the 700R4 transmission until '82 or so.... so you've got a Turbo 400. Keep up on the fluid flushes, replace the wear item replacements (pan gasket, filter, etc.), and keep it cool with a nice stacked plate aftermarket transmission cooler and you should be fine. Course the Turbo 400 is a 3 speed unit, so you're not going to get great fuel economy at highway speeds. Price we pay for cheap but durable unit....
      Engine-wise, you've got either the 425 or the 368 from '77-'81. Obviously the Big Block Cadillac V8s aren't gonna have the same aftermarket support as an SBC or an SBF. They just haven't seen as much use, let alone been in service for as long as the SBC or SBF. There are dual plane intake plenums out there, as well as different cylinder heads. But I couldn't find long tube headers (not even shit quality made-in-china specials!) for the 425 or the 368, let alone a roller camshaft. Oh well, not like you can't get a custom ground camshaft or some custom headers made. Just expect to pay for it!
      There's plenty more you can do with these cars, whether it be more drastic weight reduction via removing AC and heat parts (that's easily 150 pounds right there, AC compressor, AC condenser, heater core, ducting, and various hoses for HVAC). Custom aluminum driveshaft, and a nice aftermarket rear end with an aggressive final drive (3.27 or lower) come to mind. But the above clump of text should give you a nice starting guide. While I'm partial to Ford panther platform cars from '79-'94, the GM RWD B/C/D bodies from '77-'92 or so are a close second. People think these old land yachts are slow, underbraked, unmaneuverable turds. Aftermarket for both aforementioned platforms begs to differ!

      @@jamesb8305 I beg to differ. I have a '77 CDV daily driver which just rolled over to 200,000.
      The only major expense was a transmission rebuild, which was well worth the $1500. It still runs like new, and can easily be repainted.

    Larger than Titanic, and much prettier! I love these things, they just float to kingdom come!
