So I now have a new method to insert invisible zippers! I usually didn't have a problem with a pucker, but did with getting the top and any waist seam lined up. Cutting the top of the zipper off instead of the bottom will solve that. Great tutorial, clear and easy to understand. Once again, the old girl learned a new trick!
The zipper insertion was a new to me technique, but I find it so much easier to get everything lined up on the first try!
Whitney, you are SO INSPIRING!!! I always look forward to your next video-all of your creations are lovely. Thank you for sharing with us.
Oh my!! Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I'm not making this dress but following along all the same...but it was worth watching just to see this method of inserting an invisible zipper. Love it!
I’m so glad you liked it!
Great video. Your giving away all the state secrets of sewing.
😂
Whitney, I have been having a lot of problems with my sewing machine and with my internet and or computer lately. I have terrible intermittent computer use & have been struggling with my old gal for quite a while, now. I am so glad to see you today & I love the tutorial for your dress. They look so good on you. Take care and God Bless
I’m so sorry you’re struggling with your machine and computer! How frustrating! It is lovely to hear from you today, though!
I agree, I don't clip into the seams when I have pockets either, it is a weak point and it is a stress area as you put your hands in your pockets. Great sew-along, the dress came together easily, love the bodice is fully lined gives a much better finish.
Thank you!
Lovely! I always enjoy your sewing videos. Just wanted to say that I modify that invisible zip method by eliminating the first step of basting closed the zip seam. Other than that it is the same process -without the unpicking! If we iron flat the teeth and then simply sew the zip tape (correctly) to the zip seam edges, it will be stable and aligned enough for the final invisible zip foot sewing.
❤️
Hi Whitney, a small strip of stay tape could prevent your pocket area from stretching out . It’s true, the stretching fairy comes round and messes with your fabric while it’s hanging about!!!!!
Yes! I always forget about stay tape in the pocket area, but that is very true!
Wow! 13K subscribers! Congratulations ❤️
I just saw that! Thank you!!
Morning Whitney, I love this silhouette on you, both the V neck and scoop. I need them. Great sew along thank you so much. Have a great day. Val 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Love both dresses
Thank you!
Thanks for the sewalong. Both dresses look great on you!! The invisible zip insertion tips are invaluable. I too have a straight stitch Juki which I prefer to use despite needing the screwdriver every 2 mins. I have made the dress in Liberty Tana lawn which I had in my stash for some time and am really pleased with the results following your demos. I have to do both a fba + 2.5" and add 1.5" to lengthen the bodice as I am 5'8" and have never successfully made a fitted bodice dress before . Glad that you use pdf patterns as I live in UK so can download easily. Am looking forward to the active wear modules.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! It is a great fit and flare dress pattern!
Lovely dresses 🙂
Thank you!
Thank you! Like always, I learn something new in each of your videos. The red dress is stunning on you. The sunflower yellow dress looks like you’re ready for a sweet neighborhood lobster boil. Have fun! ~ L
Ooh! A lobster boil sounds fantastic!
The dresses turned out beautifully! That zipper technique has been around for ages, but I’m glad it’s being showcased now, it is really the best method for inserting an invisible zipper.
I had not seen it until recently, but did hear that it’s been around forever. It’s my new favorite method!
I have noticed that a few of the older methods are making a comeback, they never really left, my generation still uses them, but it’s always nice to find a new way of doing something. Sometimes it turns out to be better.
They both came out great and I liked the way you attached the bodice lining to the seam allowance by hand. I was wondering how you were going to do that. These dresses are very flattering and I hope I can do one soon! You are just so talented and I really learn from you. Thank you!
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one!
Absolutely love your zipper insertion!! Never knew you could baste it in. This will make it so much nicer!!! Thank you!!!
I think it’s been around for a long time, but it has been a game changer for me.
Loved the zipper tutorial. Have never done it that way...your way is soooo much better! Thank you!
It was a game changer for me!
wow this is amazing!
Thank you!
Hi Whitney, thank you again for a brilliant sew-along, especially as filming the episodes was not without its mishaps 😃. Thank you especially for demonstrating how to clean finish the lining for a sleeved bodice. I have puzzled over this for many years on and off and never quite figured it out so to see you do it was fantastic. Both dresses are very pretty.
Best of luck with whatever the next sew-along will be and stay safe. 😎
I’m so glad this was helpful!
LOVE the red dress on you! I'm watching these episodes out of order but I'll definitely go to the beginning. This actually looks like a pattern I would consider making and a great way to dive into some things I haven't tried yet. Love how it's a rather basic design that can be dressed-up or down with fabric choice. Thanks for the tutorial!
It is definitely a great base pattern. You can’t go wrong with a simple fit and flare dress!
A great sew along! Thanks for reminding me about this invisible zip(per) technique - I watched Kenneth King do it in his video a while ago and gave it a try on a ponte roma dress and it worked a treat. I'd never before had such a success inserting a zip(per) in a knit fabric. Love the red dress on you - definitely your colour! Thanks for such informative videos. I'm really looking forward to the swimsuit sew along as I've never made swimwear.
It is such a handy zipper technique!
Wow! This is my favorite sew along to date! I have never seen an invisible zipper put in this way and what a great result. I have learned so much from this sew along. I can’t wait for the swimsuit sew along since I bought the pattern last year and really do not understand the sewing technique for the waistband tie area. Thanks so much Whitney you are a wealth of information! Both dresses look wonderful on you.
I’m so glad this was helpful! It’s been a year since I sewed up a swimsuit so I’m looking forward to this next sew along as well!
Great zip tutorial Whitney !! Love both of the dresses on you. Thanks for sharing 🌈🏴
My pleasure!!
Another perfect fit for you. Sure you'll get lots of wear out of them.
Great tips for the zip too.
Thanks!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this.sewalong so much! And the dresses turned out lovely. It’s really a great silhouette, so feminine.
Thank you!
Loved the sewalong!! Thankyou.
I’m so glad!
Great sew along! What a great dress, the red one with the scoop neck is especially flattering. I might have to this pattern- her patterns always seem to be very flattering on most figures.
Thank you! I really like this one as well!
That zip insertion is genius, I alway hate that little bit under the zip that you can’t quite get to... love both your dresses. I Whitney tutorial would be amazing especially the scallops along the neckline...scary stuff 🥺.. Thank you for the link to the pattern tracing paper, it says it’s crepe just checking it’s definitely the right one as it’s very long winded for me to get it to the UK. I do have a friend flying over as soon as restrictions are lifted and he will bring it for me... Take care and I hope you are taking some me time xx
That’s the same paper that I use so it should work. That 12 pack lasts forever!
Beautiful classic dresses. They will last you forever!!! Fabulous technique for the zipper and lining. I am wondering why you slip stitched the lining rather than ditch stitched it. xxx
I could have ditched stitched it, but I always end up missing that little bit on the wrong side. I find that I actually like a bit of hand sewing now and again. You could totally stitch in the ditch for that last part, though!
Thank you.
My pleasure!
The zipper technique is amazing. I will remember this the next time I do an invisible zipper. I appreciate the sewing in your lap shots, if down the road you can get better lighting there it would make your videos even better. Thanks Whitney.
I agree! Lights are next on my “to buy” list!
wow that is how I always did a zipper a regular zipper. I never sewed a invisible zipper like that. When i used to sew my girls dresses. I never tried the other way that everyone usually puts in.
Apparently, this technique has been around forever, but I only saw it used somewhat recently for invisible zippers and it made invisible zippers so easy!
Beautiful Makes Whitney! Would you mind adding a bit more light when sewing/showing the close up angle. I find it hard to see. Thanks a bunch. 💜
I actually just bought more lights today so, yes! I also purchased, what I hope, are brighter bulbs as well. Hopefully you’ll see a difference in the next sew along!
Whiteny, when a pattern calls for an invisable zipper can you use a regular zipper. I donot care for invisable ones. Thank you.,have a great day. Dresses look super.
You can!
Have you tried using steam a seam light to baste your zipper in? It saves me a ton of time.
I LOVE steam a seam. That stuff comes in handy for so many things! I have used it for my zippers, but sometimes had issues with the glue and the finicky invisible zipper teeth not cooperating. It is, though, another great way to do your zippers!
Great tutorial. On the swimsuit pattern, any chance you could make a two piece adding a skirt/peplum to the top for a tankini?
Well, that would be interesting! Let me take a look!
Hi Whitney. Great Tutorial. Thankyou/ Did you serge the waist seam after stitching bodice to skirt before ironing?
No. Since it gets covered by the lining, I do not serge that seam.
Both of your dresses are great and I agree with Eva about the red one looking stunning on you. I confess that I don't like the look of the original picture or the line drawing. I struggle with some patterns to see beyond the cover photo/drawing. Hope I'm not alone in this. Apologies for my ramblings.
You are not alone in that at all. It very common to have issues seeing past the sample garment or even the line drawings. I’m glad you enjoyed this one!
I was just wondering why you sew from the bottom up when you’re using shifty material? I know there is a reason, but I don’t remember you stating exactly.
Tammie Frankum hi Tammie, we sew from hem to top to prevent the side seam from stretching out of true. The side seams usually have some bias stretch in them because they are never cut on the straight grain. Sewing from the hem to top maintains the style of the side seam, sewing fro top to hem potentially could cause your skirt to stretch out and cause your skirt to drop at the hem sides.
I figure I can stretch it out sewing either way!😂. Have always just trued up the hem before I hem it. Always thought it was more important for the top to be accurate. After sewing for 40 years, I still need to learn. Could be why my garments are usually wonky.
Nice job! Especially when you have to sew around a camera and tripod in your lap, lol
It’s my new circus act 😂.
😃
❤️
Liked the zipper 😊
Thank you!
