This guy is the shit man i have a 2017 r1 and everything I've done to my bike has been with this guys videos...so far so good man you've made me into a home mechanic. I love it
Brain thank you so much! My R1 was stolen and recovered and now I’m rebuilding it with your help - i have never worked on any motorcycle before. And the best thing is I ordered everything from SBTG shop! Thank you very much for sharing these videos
Brian there is a neat little air bleed screw just above the low point drain. The owners manual will show u. Works great for purging the air and takes a second
I just want to give a shout out. Thank you for making these videos they are perfect... makes life 10 times easier and cheaper on the every day rider. Thanks again.
Great! I'm removing the cooler for putting in a new exhaust system. Purging and refilling the system is definitely a part of that process. Since I'm converting it to a dedicated track bike, I need to put in a track compliant coolant anyway. Thanks a lot for doing this video.
Hi Brian, so, I believe it's important to fill the system with destilated water first after you have drained the old coolant, let ir run until the fans come on and drain the water again, you'll see that there's still the old green coolant there that was trapped around the cylinders, if you skip this step then you'll be potentially mixing both coolants, just speaking from personal experience.
I just bought the 18 R1M 3 weeks ago, already back at the dealer cuz of oil leaking, possibly the oil pan gasket and bolts not being tightened correctly, only 350 miles on it :(
I followed your steps to the T and spent a while with the cap off squeezing the pipes and moving side to side to get air out , I did notice on the first heat cycle that the temperature gauge was all over the place jumping numbers and went a little higher than usual , after I let the fans kick in and go off four times it was acting normal again thank God, just wondering if you have experienced that on the first heat cycle after fresh coolant , I'm pretty sure the air is out now but the first heat cycle worried me a little 👍🏼👌🏼, thanks for the great videos
The bolt that you used to bleed air was the drain plug, in the owners manual for R1 and mt-10 it says to crack the air bleed bolt for the water pump. Air bleed bolt is located right above the the clutch line by the water pump. Not saying you did it incorrectly or that this wouldn’t work but I changed my coolant today and I did you’re method with the drain plug to get out air but then also cracked the air bleed bolt and got a considerable amount of air that bled out the pump. I saw some comments about ppl following you’re video and then the bike overheating so yeah thought I’d add that in there.
Hi Van, Saludos from Venezuela…!!! Is there any particular reason you’re not using Water Wetter?... I bought from you online the WW to change my 2015 R1's cooling fluid, because on some other videos (not yours) they are using it, but now I see you did not used the WW on the 2015 R1 you had
We are in a state where the temps drop below freezing in the winter months so I prefer to use something with freeze protection built into it. That is the main reason I use Engine Ice. - Van
Van, I just changed my coolant to Engine Ice. I flushed the old one with distilled water until I couldn't see any more blue coolant. Should I be alarmed if there is any coolant left in any other parts of the system as in the radiator or hoses. 2016 R1s. Thanks in advance.
End of the day it is nearly impossible to get all of the old coolant out of the bike when you change it. That said the little bit that is left will be diluted by the new coolant so much that it will not have any impact. - Van
Hey Brian, I got 2017 R6 and wanted to know after you run the water, should I run some coolant through after and drain it to pick up any remaining water? Love the content! Thanks
Hey Brian, is it vital to let coolant out of the cylinder head drain bolt as well? I am troubleshooting coolant spill out of the overflow hose on my track bike and i am not sure whether i had air in the system or what. Someone suggested that it could be a head gasket but i got no funny exhaust smoke or milky oil. Suggestions?
If you have a bad head gasket causing this the bike will run very hot if not over heat while riding. Did you perform any maintenance for the cooling system before the problem started? - Van
Help someone, everything was running fine, I did the coolant change on my 2018 R1 now it overheats even when fans come on, what gives? Not my first time changing the coolant pretty sure I did everything correctly
You need to follow the steps in this video and make sure you do no have an air pocket. If there is an air pocket in the system coolant will not circulate. Do not ride the bike if it is overheating. - Van
You can save it for the next one. I would not use it after more than say 2 years. No facts to support that just what I would do to be on the safe side. To be fair most bikes will only need one jug. - Van
The oil cooler has oil flowing through it, not coolant. When you change the engine oil this gets changed at the same time without any additional steps. Good question! - Brian Van
You are correct the basic process would be the same. The most important part is to ensure you have the air out of the system before you ride the bike. - Van
Hey bro very nice video not as clean as your bikes but thanks for the detail you buy chance have any videos on gsxrs keep up the videos well appreciated thanks ride safe bro
Im on the last step gettin the air out i filled it let the bolt out with cap off then filled it squezzed the hose filled again then capped it when i took off the bolt no coolant comes out like theres pressure holdin it in is that good to go?
You can use the drain bolt to help purge the air out of the system after you fill it. Fill the system with the bolt in place and let it sit for a minute. Then take out the drain bolt long enough to allow any air trapped at the bottom to purge then quickly replace the bolt. - Van
Are you kidding, I can't treat that like engine oil!!! The river is half a mile from here. I dump in my neighbors yard. Every year he puts all the crappie leaves off of his tree in my yard , ...Bro It's been a minute, or two, Your killing it friend.
Engine Ice has never let me down, used it on several bikes over many years now. Engine Ice is approved for use on most every track I can think of. I do not think this is the case for Evans. We can not run coolant not approved by Sportbike Track Time and Wera. - Van

Are you for real? How the heck did I miss that in the manual...
Very important btw to those who dont do the manual system bleeding.

I flush the system but chose not to show that on the video so people would not comment on the process I used to do that. - Van
I must thank sbtg for these vids. Helped me a whole lot with my r1.
Happy to hear that and thank you for watching! - Brian Van
Beautiful bike just got a '18 R1M. It's a dream!
Great choice for sure, I had a ton of fun with my R1 during the 3 years I rode it. - Van

You may have had a stubborn air pocket. Sounds like you have it all sorted out now. Thanks for watching. - Van
Good info Brian. I didn't know about squeezing the hoses to purge out the air. Going to do this next warm day on my zx10r.
Let me know how that works out for you. - Van

There is almost always more than one way to get a job done. The method I show will purge the air out of most any motorcycle cooling system. - Van
Great job , I need to do this but just wondering if I can re-use the washer on the drain bolt 👍🏼👌🏼
I have never had to replace the drain plug washer on any of the bikes we have had over the years. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear thank you 👍🏼
I really appreciate your videos thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Blessings!!!

I was wondering what your thoughts were about using Evans waterless coolant? I used it on my R6 and it worked great. Thinking of using it on my R1.
That is an excellent option as well. Plenty of solid choices to get this job done. - Van

@@sportbiketrackgear ... thank you Van. Stay safe out there.
09-14 r1, do I need to have bike centered upright like here? or can I have it tilted on kickstand and get same results?
It will work fine with the bike on the kickstand. - Van
My bike has two draining bolts, water pump and cylinder. Which one of the two should I remove? Thanks.
The lowest one which should be the water pump drain. - Van
Thanks fellas. Appreciate these
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
Great video love this channel good clear concise instructions !
Thank you for watching! - Van
when you flash the bike the fan turns on much lower like 190 and it works alot better for cooling
Depending on the flash you use that is adjustable. - Van
Thankyou in 2022…for my 2016 r1
You are welcome and thank you for watching. - Van
Hey Brian, I got 2017 R6 and wanted to know after you run the water, should I run some coolant through after and drain it to pick up any remaining water? Love the content! Thanks
IMO there is no need to do that. There will not be enough water trapped to have any affect on the performance of the new coolant. - Van
I just followed what u did on my bike , Thx u
You are welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
Great Video..could you PLEEZEEE Do the same for the R3....Thanks !!

I also broke the drain bolt for coolant
Anywhere else I can drain it from?
You could pull any coolant hose at the lowest point in the system to drain it. - Van
Help someone, everything was running fine, I did the coolant change on my 2018 R1 now it overheats even when fans come on, what gives? Not my first time changing the coolant pretty sure I did everything correctly

can you save jug 2 for next use or will it be garbage?
You can save it for the next one. I would not use it after more than say 2 years. No facts to support that just what I would do to be on the safe side. To be fair most bikes will only need one jug. - Van
Nice work Brian
Hey Brian is there anything that needs to be done to the oil cooler system ? Or is the coolant change part of that
The oil cooler has oil flowing through it, not coolant. When you change the engine oil this gets changed at the same time without any additional steps. Good question! - Brian Van
Please, this is the same principle for R1 2005??
You are correct the basic process would be the same. The most important part is to ensure you have the air out of the system before you ride the bike. - Van
Sportbike Track Gear Thank you my friend!
is there a R6 vid from STG how to change coolant , looked around cant find it

The cap needs to be off the radiator when you do this for the coolant to flow. - Van
Thanks Man. That helped a lot.
You're welcome and thank you for watching! - Van
whatever bike he rides, I ride from here on lmao
I really loved that R1. - Van
How much does the bike hold full drain?
As a rule most sportbikes will hold approximately 1/2 gallon. Remember every model can be a little different. - Brian Van
When review Dashboard bike aim or starlane
This bike has been sold, no more new R1 videos. - Van
Beautiful bike 🤤
I did the same process looking this video after everything exactly same. I now see check engine signs in my r1 dashboard.
You will need to double check your work. Odds are you have left something unpulgged. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear mybad it got disappeared after I took it to ride
how many liters of coolant did you use?
1/2 gallon is enough to get the job done as long as you do not spill a bunch when you are filling and burping the system on most sportbikes. - Van
I thought there was an air bleed bolt on the 2015 R1
You can use the drain bolt to help purge the air out of the system after you fill it. Fill the system with the bolt in place and let it sit for a minute. Then take out the drain bolt long enough to allow any air trapped at the bottom to purge then quickly replace the bolt. - Van

engine ice is junk. laughably low boiling point. ditch it and use evans coolant
