We get an awful lot of extreme weather events in the UK these days, JT. It is without doubt a consequence of global warming, as 11 of the hottest-ever summers have occurred within the last 18 years. In 2022, parts of the UK had virtually no rainfall at all for over 5 months, and those temperature records were at an all-time highest-ever in all four of the UK nations. Likewise, snow and ice at lower levels are almost completely absent from most of our winters now, while the other seasons are much less distinct. When the rain and snow do come however, everyone knows it - as it is now commonplace for over a month's average rainfall to fall in a single day - which naturally causes widespread flooding, even where it never occurred before. Our road and railway networks are frequently closed due to landslides, while avalanches in the mountains are also becoming increasingly common. Parts of our coastline are eroding far more rapidly now than they ever had before - and our younger generations are now seriously worried about their futures, as it seems almost inevitable that large inland areas including some quite large cities such as Portsmouth (which is largely built upon a mostly flat island, and has a population approaching 180,000), will become inundated by the sea within the next 30-40 years. Meanwhile, as our authorities struggle to render travel by petrol and diesel cars obsolete in favour of electric vehicles and cities much less accessible by closing large numbers of streets off to traffic; countries such as yours frustratingly do nothing to reduce their massive carbon footprints! I can appreciate it's hard to understand the need for such measures when it doesn't directly affect you, but the chances are it soon will - and may be too late by then to do anything about it!

I’m English, and I used to agree with you. I now live in Australia with my Aussie husband. Since I’ve been here, I have had to watch bushfires tear the landscape apart, multiple times, and somehow survived a cyclone that was “out of the blue”, and wind like you would not believe! The rain here, when it rains, hurts. And hail like golf balls. So heavy, they leave dents in your car, and you have to insure the car against hail damage! I have also had sunburn so badly, the bedsheets hurt.
Edit…oh…the flooding. Don’t get me started on watching your neighbours house FLOAT AWAY with your neighbour sat on top!

Great storm of 1987, in the United Kingdom. I slept through it.
The storm made landfall in Cornwall, and tracked north-east towards Devon and then over the Midlands, going out to sea via The Wash. The strongest gusts, of up to 100 knots (190 km/h; 120 mph), were recorded along the south-eastern edge of the storm, hitting mainly Berkshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Essex, and Kent. The Royal Sovereign lighthouse 6 miles (9.7 km) off Eastbourne recorded the highest hourly-mean wind speed in the UK on its instruments at 75 kn (139 km/h; 86 mph).[16] The counties of Dorset[17] and Surrey were also heavily affected.[18]
The storm caused substantial damage over much of England, felling an estimated 15 million trees[19] (including six of the seven eponymous oaks in Sevenoaks,[20] historic specimens in Kew Gardens, Wakehurst Place, Nymans Garden, Hyde Park, London and Scotney Castle[21] and most of the trees making up Chanctonbury Ring). At Bedgebury National Pinetum, Kent almost a quarter of the trees were brought down.
Michael Fish's controversial weather forecast featured in the London 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony,[8] playing on the perceived British love of talking about the weather.
