I watched last night. Ana is really amazing to watch. I loved the artsy cinematography and the acting. But the film itself communicates in different ways, I watched with 2 female friends and they loved the film. For me it was a deep reflection on the themes presented and I was very conflicted at the end. It's worth watching. It was a very unique experience on cinema!
I think people's negative reaction comes from their idea of the persona and the myth, that is Marilyn Monroe, and how the film and book deconstruct this and reveal that beneath this icon is a deeply troubled person (Norma Jeane). Therefore, this revelation (a form of transgression) is where the negative response comes from.
Nope, she’s a trouble person BUT the negative reactions was the accuracy of the film. For example, the r**e scene of the producer, in real life, he doesn’t even care about her so Marilyn fought for her career and got where she is. Not only that, how many times that Hollywood is just going to exploited Marilyn as just a victim and avoiding showing her warrior side of herself or making those stupid rumors to be facts? This movie is nothing new, just always show what most of the public know about her: a sex symbol and a victim.
I think this is really insightful! I have found that many people feel like Marilyn Monroe, potentially due to the assumed trauma and darkness in her life, deserves to only be spoken about with high praise and for no one else to try to find truth or empathy in her story, which I just think is unrealistic and gives an icon like Marilyn preferential treatment over other icons who no one else seems to have an issue making movies, books, or shows about (ex: Elvis). Plus, I think it is unfair for critics of this film or other Marilyn adaptations to claim that "we need to let Marilyn rest" but they are still allowed to talk about how much they love her and how wonderful she was. It seems like a double standard, and in my humble opinion, not true adoration, to only want to prop Marilyn up as a perfect icon and never discuss the dark parts of her and appreciate any additional insight we can find through art, speculation, or otherwise into her life. so there's my long unnecessary comment to say thank you for your insight and for watching my review! I appreciate you!
Oh, goodness! There is so many emotions! Being an artist myself, I fell completely in love with much of the imagery and the music by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis totally captured the moments and heavily increased the emotionalism in the film. I understand people being disgusted and feeling like she was exploited. I can agree to a certain extent because it is rather difficult to digest. However, I think we’ve seen and heard so much about Marilyn that we have almost grown comfortable over the years with how our minds depicted her. Sure, it is known that a lot of the film was indeed fiction, but much of it was also non-fiction. I honestly believe and can almost bet that many women can relate to much of what she endured throughout her journey; the roller coaster ride of sadness and the spurts of pseudo happiness? How many times have we said we were happy and really weren’t? This woman was trying to break through childhood trauma and trying to weed through it all to find who she was; her identity. Unpopular opinion, but I saw art and all art isn’t beautiful. Much of it is “Monet” if you will. From afar, it’s beautiful, but up close, a mess. Truth be told, this art was reality for many, but this wasn’t served with warm fuzzies which can be disturbing to many. These are the parts of life that remain hidden that are often taken to the grave. Life is art and they painted this where it is a full discussion piece.
Sasha! Excellent, excellent review and analysis of Blonde. I saw the movie at the theater this weekend. It is a powerful and disturbing, glorious piece of filmmaking that I think extends beyond Marilyn's too short life. Anna is an absolute wonder in this film. It's not just her beauty and her bringing Marilyn and Norma Jean to life, it's all so her in the private moments that only a fine actress can bring to life. Could the film have been shorter? Yes. Is there more nudity in the film than perhaps was needed? Yes. Should the movie have been given an NC-17 rating? I think yes for the reasons you mentioned. But one thing I must say is that I believe that even in the places where the movie fails, it also succeeds gloriously because of its ambition. Yes there are going to be more popular films out there. Yes this film is not for everyone. But what this movie is, and what I believe the director has created is a work of art. Criticizing this movie in a way is like criticizing Leonardo da Vinci for not finishing the Mona Lisa. I think the movie is bold and wonderful one of the best films of the year. I hope the academy has the vision to honor it when they have the opportunity. Great review!
I’ve been feeling conflicted on this movie recently. On one hand, I do want to watch it for Ana De Armas’s performance as Marilyn Monroe. After seeing her give great performances in Blade Runner 2049 and Knives Out, I think she’s going to do an absolutely amazing job as Marilyn Monroe based on her acting in the trailers. On the other hand with the NC-17 rating and explicit content which is one of the reasons why I’ve been seeing mixed reactions on this film. I’m very worried about how uncomfortable this movie might make me and because of that, I might not watch it right away. Probably want to watch it when I’m feeling more emotionally prepared to. Great review as always, Sasha! 👍
It is a very heavy film but I’m not exactly sure it’s anything that you actually see that gave it the rating. Technically NC17 is one step below an X but there’s no explicit sex scenes even the BJ scene you don’t really see what you think you’re seeing. I think it’s just the overall subject matter drugs, alcohol, topless scenes, child abuse & some violence that they’re protecting the kids from.

That was a really good review! I saw the movie and I loved it. I'm not a film student, so I responded to the movie as a layperson. Yes, it is disturbing, but it makes you appreciate Marilyn all the more. I never though any scene was gratuitous even the hard-to-take ones. You are right, the film itself is a work of art and can we have a word in edgewise about Ana de Armas. That was a great performance.
Thank you for this review! I can see that you understand art and experimental film, and it was difficult finding a review that understood what the film was doing, and immediately gave it a negative review. Your take in a sea of bandwagon hate on the film because they didn’t understand the art and depth behind it, was refreshing.
Art and depth? Others don't understand? Oh PLEASE! As a filmmaker myself i can tell you this is not a movie with a lot of depth to it. Sure it wants to be that but in the end it falls flat in that matter and treats its main character as a victim and a victim ONLY. It fails to tell anything else about Marilyn but her suffering and its "artistic" aesthetics are there simply there for the movie to be called artsy or whatever. Aesthetics in this movie rarely do anything for the story or the main character itself. It is a shallow look into Marilyn's persona and life. All her lufe she was treated as a dumb bimbo, in her death we see her as a victim. What we never get to see is Marilyn as a PERSON and this movie like all the other takes on her life, failed to do so. Instead it gives us topless, crying and unstable Marilyn for almost 3 hours.

I actually saw the comments that Scarlet Johansen should have played Marilyn because she resembles her more. What do you think who resembles her more: Scarlett or Ana?
Great review 👍, I heard that this movie is one of the most brutal films of all time. Ana is literally Monroe of what I’ve saw. Had the longest standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. I can’t wait when this comes out at Netflix.
My feelings towards this film are very conflicted, the cinematography and performance of Ana De Armas alone deserves merit. My biggest struggle was the lack of respect and dignity shown to Norma Jeane/Marilyn. Yes it’s important to acknowledge and show the impact this abuse from those in control had on her but to do it in that much disturbing detail was too much. This is made even worse by the fact that some of these happenings weren’t true and fictitious as it’s based on a the book that is a fictionalised take on her life, not an actual biography based on the facts, it just makes this film come across as exploitative and disrespectful just as Marilyn was treated in real life. For me it’s a 5/10 purely for Ana and the cinematography. Let Marilyn rest in peace. I love your take on film being two different art forms: entertainment and art, which this film and most Oscars films lean towards. Great review.
This film is NOT art. It's an attack on Marilyn Monroe's legacy. Also, it's very degrading to the actress(Ana De Armas) and to Marilyn. Where are all the feminists?! LOL They should be out protesting the theaters running Blonde. I went to see it with a group of friends and some of my male friends walked out. The trailers are beautiful. The movie is not. Don't eat before you go see it.
the movie was lacking coherence (even for an experimental film). I know art is subjective....but ughhh most of it felt cheap and superficial (the repetitive use of that cgi baby, the rocket movie with jfk, etc). I get how fun it can seem to film students but the intent felt lacking.
Yes, I think that would be an accurate description. It's nearly 3 hours, with lots of lingering shots and long scenes, so it's definitely not an edge of your seat movie.
@@SashaRaquel so with that being the case, do you think people should watch it, like personally I'm not much a Marilyn Monroe fan, but I'm curious as to what makes it Nc-17, should I see it?

I didn’t mean its the first NC-17 movie available on streaming, but this is the first original streaming movie (a movie to be released BY a streaming service) to be rated NC-17

Marilyn Monroe turned down playing Jean Harlow her childhood hero in a film because it was none factual, vulgar and disrespectful and under developed. I just wish people had respect dignity and respect and respect for Marilyn Monroe had for Jean Harlow. I have no respect for Ana de Armsas, The director Andrew whatever and the producer Brad Pitt and the writer of the book blond, they should all be ashamed of themselves acting like they are representing Marilyn Monroe and her pain while actually Exploiting it. Ana de Armsas should not be cuddled or respected for doing this to Marilyn Monroe. She should be held accountable for taking the role and hurting Marilyn Monroe and her legacy. Marilyn Monroe didn't do that to Jean Harlow. Everyone have respect for the dead, respect for legends and please have respect for Marilyn Monroe she deserves that.
People will project whatever they want on a person if they're a star. You're literally doing it right now. You have no idea whether or not she would have endorsed the film. Nobody will ever know the real version of her just as you will never know the real version of any celebrity. It's not disrespectful because it's not claiming to be a series of facts. It's claiming to be art. People like yourself and those shitting on the film by standing on some moral high ground as opposed to discussing the craftsmanship will all be wiped away in a shot amount of time. Have your moment. It won't last.

I as an actual Marilyn Monroe fan I have no respect for anyone who is exploiting Marilyn Monroe for their own personal gain. If you where actually a Marilyn Monroe fan and not an Ana de Armsas fan you'd probably would not like her or this horrible project either. She in fact became the first woman ever to start her own production company called Marilyn Monroe productions to escape being exploited and sexualized. Yeah, she didn't like being used that way. So I'm speaking up for her and I don't care if you or anyone else doesn't like it. I'm not a Ana de Armsas fan whom is exploiting Marilyn Monroe for an Oscar. She's not exploiting herself she knows what she's doing portraying Marilyn Monroe in a money making movie... Yeah, I don't like or respect Ana de Armsas Or Andrew whatever or Brad Pitt and I don't respect the writer of the book blond. They are all alive and fair game to redicule. Marilyn Monroe is not... I'm a Marilyn Monroe fan first and foremost not your fan or Ana de Armsas fan or anyone exploiting Marilyn Monroe and I'm not a fan of anyone supporting this cruelty done to Marilyn Monroe. And I don't have to. I 💕💕💕 you Marilyn Monroe.
This book and now movie are not destroying her legacy they’re exploring it. She was not Lorelei Lee (she was a great actress) she was not Sugar Kane (she was a great actress) She wasn’t always the happy, giddy, bubbly girl we saw in interviews. She was actually a very troubled adult with a traumatic childhood full of emotional, mental and physical abuse. As a result she understandably dealt with lots of personal and emotional issues as well as prescription drug and alcohol abuse. It’s tragic but it’s the facts. So sugarcoating that and making a PG version of her life would be a disservice.
Ana de armas disse que nao entendeu porque classificaram como nc17, eu ainda não assisti o filme, mas confio na Ana de armas. Estou ansioso para assistir. Brasil.
Hi to Brazil! thank you for watching! I agree with the fact that this movie is clearly for adults, but I don't know that it should have been rated NC-17 over R, and I agree with Ana and the director's comments regarding the fact that the same content is available with less shocking ratings on TV. I only hope that the NC-17 rating makes people aware of what they are going to watch but doesn't scare them away. thank you so much for watching my review!
@@vitorcesar1712 Nao achei horrivel, mas depressivo. Ana chora quase o filme inteiro e e abusada contantemente. Nao e um filme com final feliz, e um filme para refletir e discutir sobre os temas apresentado, a cinematografia e excelente e os atores tambem. Vale a pena assistir mas targa um lanche porque sao quase 3 horas de duracao!
It was broadly interpreted. Her mother and childhood were not factual, many relationships aren't factual. I feel they used Marilyn as an icon but they could have made this about those general generic blondes of that era as the title suggest. They even made joe dimaggio a wife beater which I never heard. I know he was very strict and old fashioned . To not clearly state this is a fantasy of her life is very unfair since she died 60 years ago and many don't know her life well only her images. They did a great job making ana look like mm yet the exploited ana with lots of nude and sex scenes.
you're definitely correct in the sense that it is not in any way purely factual. from my (brief) research prior to this film, it actually was cited as a reason for their divorce that there was domestic violence, so I don't think that was the most made-up part of the film. I personally feel that this film is big enough in the public eye that being based on the book of the same name (which is credited with the author right after the director's name in the credits and was shortlisted for a Pulitzer) means is public information enough to know this movie is not based on facts, but fiction. I completely understand that younger audiences don't necessarily know what is fact and what is fiction, but do any of us completely know what is true and what is imagined about Marilyn Monroe? that's kind of the whole point right? Ana signed on for this film, I assume knowing what the film entailed so I wouldn't personally call that exploitation (unless she has public come out and stated she felt exploited). However, I thank you for sharing your opinions about the film and for watching my review, it really does mean a lot
Nobody likes being lied to, no matter how pretty is the lie. This movie is just filled with rumors and speculation glorified for sexual voyeurism. It is not art.
... while I'm not sure I agree with that statement, it is partly what I was saying with this movie is that it is much more for the sake of appreciating film form than it is about the story or really enjoying or being entertained by it. by your definition, I think it would qualify as cinema
"Art above entertainment"? Really? Does this allow the "artist" to debauch the memory of a real person by simply "reimaging" that person's life? Fiction is just that -- fiction. One does not have the license to make up things about a real person simply as "art". This is not a biopic which attempts to explain a person's life. This is flat-out pornography. The poor woman suffered enough in her life, her memory does not need perverted "artists" to embellish the hells she endured for the sake of cheap sleaze. Pornography presented as art; what a laugh.
i just fell in love the way how you analyze this movie. Professional job. Thank you.

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. And she deserves a best actress award, without a doubt in imho
I’m glad you liked it! Thank you so much for watching my review!
Too didactic. Summary of performance is what I want to know.
Ana de Armas was fantastic. There ya go!
Nobody likes being lied to, no matter how pretty is the lie. This movie is just filled with rumors and speculation glorified for sexual voyeurism. It is not art.
watch rrr if you want to be entertained and wanna have a good joyful time
thanks for the recommendation!
@@SashaRaquel btw,as a cinephile,I was just checking your letterbox
and I found la la land is one of your favorites
well,same pinch
If it's existing for the purpose of entertainment, then it doesn't qualify as cinema.
... while I'm not sure I agree with that statement, it is partly what I was saying with this movie is that it is much more for the sake of appreciating film form than it is about the story or really enjoying or being entertained by it. by your definition, I think it would qualify as cinema
You could just tell a man directed this. Exploit the women and not the men. The extras screaming Marilyn! in slow mo were pretty funny though.
Andrew Dominik is the greatest living director.
