You validate people's fears/objections in a calm and reasonable manner. Then, you explain your process never demeaning other viewpoints, or worse, people themselves. I don't generally sub even when the info is good. If the person is disrespectful there negativity is just not worth it. Thank you for a thoughtful presentation. I have for years used an engine degreaser and used a sprayer at the car wash or my pressure washer to clean my engine. I do blow it down real well with a leaf blower. I have never had a problem. You are very polite and informative in your videos. Thank you!

For anyone afraid of spraying water into your engine bay: If you have deep spark plug wells, plug them up with something and tape a plastic bag over your alternator and anything else you're afraid of getting wet. Then go to town with your degreaser, brush and water hose. Once you've gotten that done and dried everything off, clean out the spark plug wells and everything else you covered up earlier by hand using no water. Its not quite as quick and easy but if it gives you some peace of mind, perhaps it's worth the extra time and effort.
80-year-old woman. I recently did this, using "tire foam" and follow recommended procedure from one of these podcasts on a newly acquired 2000 Buick Lesabre because it came from a not so desirable winter climate. Well it didn't get all the grease off but there was 21 years of crap on the engine. The engine did run a little rough because the blower I had was from a canister vacuum cleaner and am sure some water must have gotten somewhere it shouldn't. Am overhauling my new acquisition: replaced a battery, driving lights module, cruise control and fixing a few rust problems. Trying to decided what to do about scratches and paint. That auto body class I took at 35 will come in handy. Got a '41 Chevy at 15 and cars were easier to work on in 1955. Worked on all my cars and loved it. Now I'm having a second childhood working on cars again. Soo much fun!
This is the first time I have seen this video and using an airless paint sprayer to clean the engine compartment, AMAZING! I do auto detailing along with cleaning the engine bay and this has just opened up my eyes to using this tool! Scott you're a genius for that! I'm not so much a fan of this video. There is no need to purchase expensive equipment for engine bay cleaning. I too did not want to soak my 12 year old engine with gallons of water. Rather than posting negative comments, I just followed Scott's other engine bay detailing video and used (straight) Super Clean. It chewed through the grease and grime like a champ. It took only about 30 minutes to finish the entire job. My engine ended up looking factory new. Stop freaking out and hammering Scott with negative comments people. He's got years of experience.

Awesome video sir. I can tell you when I was younger I cleaned my engine bays on several of my personal vehicles the WRONG way and absolutely saturated the engine compartment with water. And I didn’t bother covering up any of the electrical components like the alternator. I’ve used pressure washers, garden hoses with a pressure head, etc. Perhaps I was incredibly lucky or Just blessed but even washing the engines the wrong way I never had any damage. Really informative video and wash process and I appreciate the tips. Thank you!

Scott you're awesome...hell with those people. I've cleaned my engine on my Lincoln MKZ and no damage...NO DAMAGE AT ALL. I even had a Ford mechanic friend of mine watch your video and said there was nothing wrong with what you did. Older engines..1995 or older he said he would be careful but new engines are well sealed and engines are built to get wet. So most of us love u Scott and keep making these videos
Great instructions! One thing that I have seen in the past is when you clean around the spark plugs, depending on the engine, water can pool there. It doesn't take much water in there with grease mixing in causing that water to become conductive causing the spark plug to arc into the head. I have found the best way is to use an air compressor and blow all the water out of the spark plug holes. Water can get into the spark plug cables as well, so I pop those off really quickly and blow them out as well so they are dry. I have never had an issue using water to rinse an engine off, as long as it is dry afterwards, and it is the best way to clean it.
Forget about what others say we all have problem that scare us and make us worry as long as you are explaining things this will ease their fears, thanks

Your videos have given me the desire to treat my vehicles better. In Western PA, things get horrific due to the salt and anti skid used on our roads so engine bays get rough in a hurry. I think I’m going to try this method with my Wagner paint gun with distilled water.
For those afraid to get the engine wet. How much water do you think gets on your engine when your driving down the highway at 65 MPH in a nice rain? You have a 65 MPH wind blasting the water through the radiator which is also being pulled in by the radiator fans. There is a ton of splash coming off the roadway and from your tires essentially pressure washing the engine compartment at 65 MPH for as long as your trip is! Does your owners manual say if it rains do not drive your car? Park it until all roadways are completely dry? Cars are designed to be much more water resistant that they used to be. That being said, use common sense when spraying water on your engine. If you do not have any common sense then you should leave this job to someone that does. Yes, you can put too much water on an engine and yes, you can cause damage if done wrong. That's where common sense comes into play. Know your engine and know what can and can not get wet. Do not sit there spraying tons of water on the entire engine haphazardly or you will have problems! Rinsing your motor off with minimal water is completely ok if done correctly. I guarantee your engine gets far wetter when driving to grandmothers house in a rainstorm! As Scott said, cars are water resistant. Not waterproof! If you use minimal water, know your vehicle and what parts you want to avoid getting too wet, remove standing and pooling water right away it will be ok! Good work Scott. Thanks for your videos.
Totally right on. Do a degreaser spray , wipe, brush, and hit it it with good spay while running. Avoid the obvious electricals as muchs possible. I have driven through torrential rain an 65 at least and never a problem. Drive immediately after completion and air dried. If not 100% use a gentle household spray and wipe for detail.
WoW I bought that machine like 7 years ago used once and its been on box for a long time. Sir you just made my day and save me around 500 dollars for 4 cars. Thats my to do list on this weekend. Thank you for passing your knowledge 👍🏻
Love you Scott...when I detailed at super big auction, we detailed/reconditioned over 400 per day and we always used pressure washers and degreaser in the engine bay, never had an issue

Finally cleaned the engine bay on my 2004 Toyota Tundra. Didn't take a before PIC. But it came out fabulous. I disconnected the + battery terminal, aluminum foiled most connectors that looked like could be a problem with water and the mass flow sensor, Engine has never been cleaned before. Followed your video steps. Used Simple green because thought it might be more basic and might neutralize the salt on the brushed aluminum valve covers and intake manifold.Used Meguiars spray wax on underside of hood and on all painted surfaces in the engine compartment. Didn't know if Trim Shine would be a problem on painted surfaces.Then used Trim Shine on all plastic and rubber. The handiest brush I used was a $1 1 1/2" paint brush.Thanks for your help on the video. Had it not been for your video, I probably would never have done it. Oh, truck started and ran with no problems. Thanks again.

I have been washing engines off with water since I was old enough to hold a hose. You cover the distributor cap (I'm showing my age) and the alternator and wash away. I grew up working at an IH dealership and much of my job was cleaning tractor engines with water for the mechanics. I still cover the electronics and spray with water. I like having a clean engine compartment. It makes it easier to spot problems.
Standard logic error states that if one has been doing a certain task for 40 years and never had a single issue then that person is either extremely lucky, lying, or is not doing it correctly.

I cleaned my first engine bay today for the first time a 2014 KIA optima. A lot easier than I thought it would be I used the CHEMICAL GUYS degreaser and it literally cut through everything and it already comes diluted to the proper lvl. Used a nice soft paintbrush to agitate the degreaser and man, made a world of difference. Engine bay shines like its brand new.
I have been cleaning engines like this for a long time on multiple vehicles that I have owned. The only one I have owned that you have to be really careful is the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator 5.4 litre. Keep doing what you're doing. Excellent job if you ask me.
For 50 years I have just popped the hood on the car in the car wash and hosed the engine down. Never had a problem. Now that I am in Mexico there aren't many wand type self car washes. So I have been looking at your videos and am planning on doing some of the methods you use. Keep up the good work.
Scott ....I'm so grateful for this video, I've seen your previous video which you explained (scientifically) the dangerous of using any other grease foams of tire cleaning or shning or what ever, frankly to tell you I was doubting somehow of those products, and your recent video (above) is the most safe way to clean an engine car I'd like to share you this: I used to clean my cars since 35 years till the moment by taking them to any car wash, washing my engine with diesel and water once every time I change my car oil & filter after doing 5000KM, and to complete washing the car from outside normaly with soap and water, I havent face any problem with the engine of washing with diesel and keeps clean for long time, the only thing I still looking for is how to make the engine shining after washing by diesel lol, I hope you can advice me of that accept my deep respects forr this precious video, I deeply believe of your precious advices ... Highly agree of free flowing water with garden hose or pressure washer. I personally use a 35 or 50 degree nozzle to rinse, the rinse that came with my Ryobi 1200 psi washer. Now to remember to use leaf blower to dry
Of all the vehicles I have had, I have never run into an issue with water... FYI, it floods here in Houston TX and sometimes I drive through 4 ft of water... Good job Scott 👏 .
Having watched you cleaning a few engin bays it has encouraged me to try cleaning my engine bay in my 1994 motorhome. It is extremely dirty and oily. I'm wondering what your recommendation would be on the method I should use, hose or pressure washer. I should say that we don't have harbour freight here in Canada. I find your videos very informative as well as entertaining.
Scott love your video, a lot of really good ideas. Some people just do not think things through. Every part in the engine bay that can be damaged by water is designed to a certain degree to stop water infiltration. because it rains people hit puddles in the road, so it gets wet. so free flowing water or low pressure water is not going to hurt it at all. In fact it is needed to clear off the dirt and grime that comes off the top of the motor that falls down to the lower areas. so do not fret what the keyboard bullies think. most just want to argue and have probably never detailed an engine bay, Right. Also thank you for the airless sprayer idea, I will have to try that next time i detail my engine.
For those worried about electronics, use a few plastic bags and cover those areas that are connected to power and it also helps to disconnect your negative battery terminal, so power is off while spraying! I have cleaned over 50 engines with degreasers and H20 and have never encountered any problems. Just my opinion!
I've been doing mobile detailing for 3 decades in Tampa FL. I have pressure washed thousands, and thousands of engine bays. 1 problem in 3 decades. Mazda Miata MX5. Water got down in spark plug channels. Blew out with leaf blower and ran like a champ. The key is making sure you dry the engine with leaf blower, compressor with air nozzle, or hell just put a fan over it if you don't have those, or leave the hood open and let the sun in there.

Great work. Free Flowing water is safe for engine just not High pressure water which can go into sensor etc. Normally most modern cars have those water sealed but after years of driving they become less water resistant. So yes as long as it's not high pressure water it's ok. Water and dish soap is a good and safe enough Degreaser. Again nice job keep up the good work
I have always used engine degreaser and car wash wands on supernasty engines and undercarriages. Every 6 months or so just a mist to clean them up. I do not spray directly on alternators or computers. No problems. You will find out if you have bad plugwires. I like the tool you have! I will have to get one!
It just rained over 2 inches the other day and I got water up on the engine going through deep puddles. Oh dear! More than you used. I'm an airline mechanic and the equipment is more durable than most realize. Your video is pretty good
Good suggestions, I would advise to check the instrument panel for the “check engine” light prior to detailing the engine bay. Make sure you don’t get blamed for damage to a sensor😊

I supply automotive parts to the big 3, and one criteria for approval is to insure engine decals don’t come off when using a pressure washer. Example fan warning label on the radiator support shroud. Pressure washing an engine is planed for when designing the engine.

I have used water on my engine and have had no problems at all. The hacks that put you down are not living as God wants you to. They will be judged when the time comes but no by me or any human on the earth. You care enough to share what you know, even some of your detailing secrets and people scoff at it.... WOW. Your videos have given me the desire to treat my vehicles better. In Western PA, things get horrific due to the salt and anti skid used on our roads so engine bays get rough in a hurry. I think I’m going to try this method with my Wagner paint gun with distilled water.
For those afraid to get the engine wet. How much water do you think gets on your engine when your driving down the highway at 65 MPH in a nice rain? You have a 65 MPH wind blasting the water through the radiator which is also being pulled in by the radiator fans. There is a ton of splash coming off the roadway and from your tires essentially pressure washing the engine compartment at 65 MPH for as long as your trip is! Does your owners manual say if it rains do not drive your car? Park it until all roadways are completely dry? Cars are designed to be much more water resistant that they used to be.
That being said, use common sense when spraying water on your engine. If you do not have any common sense then you should leave this job to someone that does. Yes, you can put too much water on an engine and yes, you can cause damage if done wrong. That's where common sense comes into play. Know your engine and know what can and can not get wet. Do not sit there spraying tons of water on the entire engine haphazardly or you will have problems! Rinsing your motor off with minimal water is completely ok if done correctly. I guarantee your engine gets far wetter when driving to grandmothers house in a rainstorm!
As Scott said, cars are water resistant. Not waterproof! If you use minimal water, know your vehicle and what parts you want to avoid getting too wet, remove standing and pooling water right away it will be ok!

Totally right on. Do a degreaser spray , wipe, brush, and hit it it with good spay while running. Avoid the obvious electricals as muchs possible. I have driven through torrential rain an 65 at least and never a problem. Drive immediately after completion and air dried. If not 100% use a gentle household spray and wipe for detail.
the engine fans usually don't come on at 65mph
I duct tape trash bags all the way around my engine when it starts raining so my engine stays dry.

Love you Scott...when I detailed at super big auction, we detailed/reconditioned over 400 per day and we always used pressure washers and degreaser in the engine bay, never had an issue

Finally cleaned the engine bay on my 2004 Toyota Tundra. Didn't take a before PIC. But it came out fabulous. I disconnected the + battery terminal, aluminum foiled most connectors that looked like could be a problem with water and the mass flow sensor, Engine has never been cleaned before. Followed your video steps. Used Simple green because thought it might be more basic and might neutralize the salt on the brushed aluminum valve covers and intake manifold.Used Meguiars spray wax on underside of hood and on all painted surfaces in the engine compartment. Didn't know if Trim Shine would be a problem on painted surfaces.Then used Trim Shine on all plastic and rubber. The handiest brush I used was a $1 1 1/2" paint brush.Thanks for your help on the video. Had it not been for your video, I probably would never have done it. Oh, truck started and ran with no problems. Thanks again.

I am a professional painter and have been doing this for a very long time with our 395 graco pumps. Works like a charm and not too much water but still like a power washer.

As a professional Detailer i power washed hundreds of engine bays. Never had any issues just need to pay attention to what you are doing. Keep it up Scott! Take a shot every time Scott says Watah :)

I have been washing engines off with water since I was old enough to hold a hose. You cover the distributor cap (I'm showing my age) and the alternator and wash away. I grew up working at an IH dealership and much of my job was cleaning tractor engines with water for the mechanics. I still cover the electronics and spray with water. I like having a clean engine compartment. It makes it easier to spot problems.

Standard logic error states that if one has been doing a certain task for 40 years and never had a single issue then that person is either extremely lucky, lying, or is not doing it correctly.
I know, right? Me too. I got no probs hosing my engine compartment down. You just gotta know how to do it.

@Jojo why not just unplug both terminals and cover them with a plastic bag? you dont really need to blow dry it just wait till it drys naturally.

I've been washing engine bays many times. If you're circumspect where you point water. None of it is a problem. Cars vehicles get we in heavy rain .

I cleaned my first engine bay today for the first time a 2014 KIA optima. A lot easier than I thought it would be I used the CHEMICAL GUYS degreaser and it literally cut through everything and it already comes diluted to the proper lvl. Used a nice soft paintbrush to agitate the degreaser and man, made a world of difference. Engine bay shines like its brand new.

I have been cleaning engines like this for a long time on multiple vehicles that I have owned. The only one I have owned that you have to be really careful is the Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator 5.4 litre. Keep doing what you're doing. Excellent job if you ask me.

For 50 years I have just popped the hood on the car in the car wash and hosed the engine down. Never had a problem. Now that I am in Mexico there aren't many wand type self car washes. So I have been looking at your videos and am planning on doing some of the methods you use. Keep up the good work.
Scott ....I'm so grateful for this video, I've seen your previous video which you explained (scientifically) the dangerous of using any other grease foams of tire cleaning or shning or what ever, frankly to tell you I was doubting somehow of those products, and your recent video (above) is the most safe way to clean an engine car
I'd like to share you this: I used to clean my cars since 35 years till the moment by taking them to any car wash, washing my engine with diesel and water once every time I change my car oil & filter after doing 5000KM, and to complete washing the car from outside normaly with soap and water, I havent face any problem with the engine of washing with diesel and keeps clean for long time, the only thing I still looking for is how to make the engine shining after washing by diesel lol, I hope you can advice me of that

Highly agree of free flowing water with garden hose or pressure washer. I personally use a 35 or 50 degree nozzle to rinse, the rinse that came with my Ryobi 1200 psi washer. Now to remember to use leaf blower to dry
Of all the vehicles I have had, I have never run into an issue with water... FYI, it floods here in Houston TX and sometimes I drive through 4 ft of water... Good job Scott 👏 .
Having watched you cleaning a few engin bays it has encouraged me to try cleaning my engine bay in my 1994 motorhome. It is extremely dirty and oily. I'm wondering what your recommendation would be on the method I should use, hose or pressure washer. I should say that we don't have harbour freight here in Canada. I find your videos very informative as well as entertaining.

Scott love your video, a lot of really good ideas. Some people just do not think things through. Every part in the engine bay that can be damaged by water is designed to a certain degree to stop water infiltration. because it rains people hit puddles in the road, so it gets wet. so free flowing water or low pressure water is not going to hurt it at all. In fact it is needed to clear off the dirt and grime that comes off the top of the motor that falls down to the lower areas. so do not fret what the keyboard bullies think. most just want to argue and have probably never detailed an engine bay, Right. Also thank you for the airless sprayer idea, I will have to try that next time i detail my engine.
For those worried about electronics, use a few plastic bags and cover those areas that are connected to power and it also helps to disconnect your negative battery terminal, so power is off while spraying! I have cleaned over 50 engines with degreasers and H20 and have never encountered any problems. Just my opinion!
I've been doing mobile detailing for 3 decades in Tampa FL. I have pressure washed thousands, and thousands of engine bays. 1 problem in 3 decades. Mazda Miata MX5. Water got down in spark plug channels. Blew out with leaf blower and ran like a champ. The key is making sure you dry the engine with leaf blower, compressor with air nozzle, or hell just put a fan over it if you don't have those, or leave the hood open and let the sun in there.
This guy is very knowledgeable and has lots of experience. His videos are very helpful!

Have ryobi 18 v. Pressure washer wand,and it does the same thing as far as water delivery ,and not great pressure,ideal for jobs like this.Awesome post. Thank you.

Great work. Free Flowing water is safe for engine just not High pressure water which can go into sensor etc. Normally most modern cars have those water sealed but after years of driving they become less water resistant. So yes as long as it's not high pressure water it's ok. Water and dish soap is a good and safe enough Degreaser. Again nice job keep up the good work
You can use a 16/32 oz. spray bottle with water or a slightly wet towel to clean off the degreaser on the engine bay.
I have always used engine degreaser and car wash wands on supernasty engines and undercarriages. Every 6 months or so just a mist to clean them up. I do not spray directly on alternators or computers. No problems. You will find out if you have bad plugwires. I like the tool you have! I will have to get one!

Good suggestions, I would advise to check the instrument panel for the “check engine” light prior to detailing the engine bay. Make sure you don’t get blamed for damage to a sensor😊

I supply automotive parts to the big 3, and one criteria for approval is to insure engine decals don’t come off when using a pressure washer. Example fan warning label on the radiator support shroud. Pressure washing an engine is planed for when designing the engine.
I simply don't have access to flowing water - apartment living - so I appreciate the video for that alone.
