Piccadilly line | Cab ride journey from Cockfosters to Heathrow Terminal 4

- Hello. Yes, don't we just love facts. A fact I have for you, is that when the "JNP" (Jubilee Northern and Piccadilly) came together in the form of a partnership, when the 1973 stock trains were refurbished, they were installed to have the ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system on them, which is what modern day train systems use, under ATO (Automatic Train Operation).
You may be asking, well, why didn't it happen. Now that very simply is due to the nature that TfL did not have the funding to put the project into place. When the trains release in 2024, they will still be run by conventional signalling for that sole reason.
This is the original Piccadilly line video.

I'd like to thank you all for stopping by to watch. As much as I wanted to release a Metropolitan line cab video, the file has unfortunately "corrupted", and let's say that you can only see about 1 minute and 50 seconds of it. The rest of it is solely audio.
For those that like front views. You may review this video here which goes from Acton Town siding down to Uxbridge!

@TransporterTony I have a fact about the Piccadilly Line.
that drivers a legend for stopping to let u take a photo mid tunnel
He was subsequently fired for the delay! 😭
@@lnteIIigence 😂
Such a shame that they couldn't have lit up York Rd a bit so we could see.
I agree, very awesome of him to do so. But I’m wondering… Wouldn’t stopping the train set off some kind of warning for those monitoring the entire system?
So THAT'S why the tube stops mid tunnel omw to work on the P line
24:38 was pretty cool seeing the Victoria line leaving the station at the same time
I am surprised by the total darkness in tunnels. In Prague or Berlin you can see nearly continuous light and cabview videos even show switches and wall signage.
I've always wanted to drive the picadilly line, now I'm too old to do it. This is the next best thing. Thanks 👍 feels like it's the fastest line too

Thw junction for the Aldwych branch is before Holborn Station, there used to be 4 platforms but the Aldwych bound pair have been mothballed.
It’s interesting seeing the Tube from the cab - I’ve seen the DART trains in Dublin and the LUAS Trams from the cab, as well as other railways in my native Ireland, not just here in Manchester where I’ve lived 24 years - the last time I was in London was in 2002 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧😍🙏❤️
Nice to see a manually driven line with conventional signals, soon to be a rarity
It may continue for a longer period than you think during the current belt tightening times ...
There's something very relaxing about the whole thing. I used to use Hounslow East to London regularly and this brings back the sounds of the Tube.
This is the video ive always wanted. Espeicially because the picc is my local and all time fav line. I always rewatch this vid i dont know why but its so satisfying.
I'm glad to hear it. :)
Wonderful share friend!
Really interesting! I used to commute from Southgate and the worst part of the Picadilly line was always Arnos Grove.
What’s wrong with Arnos Grove?
Nothing anything like this has been done before abosolutley love it
I stayed in Hounslow a few months ago, so really nice to see a cabview of the Piccalilli line, beautiful Sunset.
Wow. Loved this video. I am not sure how your channel hasn't been recommended to me before. I have travelled Picc from Heathrow a couple of times, but never TO.
Headlights do not appear to be a high safety item on your trains in the UK. Here in Australia we have to have the headlight on at all times day or night. Our headlight are really bright and can be dimmed or switched off for approaching traffic. When we enter a tunnel the whole tunnel cavern is illuminated. Your eyes do not have to "change" when you exit tunnel portals into daylight. Absolute great video.
Now, that’s a fast subway train.
Amazing video , like always . Though , the thing that I enjoyed the most is when we were at Finsbury Park and we saw a Victoria Line train to Brixton : it was like in NYC MTA Subway when you can see the lines spliting . By the way , good work to stand 1 hour to film this incredible masterpiece !
The history of the London Underground system is somewhat similar to New York's in that the lines were first built by competing private operators and then unified under public ownership.
Reminds me so much of Lionel track.. I rode on the Piccadilly Line back in 1978, along with the District Line. Earl's Court was my home stop. Interesting - no headlights on the train and no tunnel lights.
Trains do have headlights. They are just Shitty Halogen bulbs and the camera isnt set sensetive enough to see them
Nice cab ride , rel trak yang sangat membingungkan
Amazing, it takes off like a rocket, and is stopped exactly at the right place, wow!
An absolute delight, thank you. Thumb's up ))
Great video! Guess everyone who has landed at Heathrow Airport knows the Piccadilly Line. However, it's a shame that the final bit to Heathrow Terminal 1,2 and 3 is not included.
Ayyy South Kensington station, my favourite. Science Museum and the Natural History Museum.
I Love This Video It Is A Very Excellent Video
What a great document of things as they are now. I hope you can do more routes on other lines. In the next few years with more automation inevitable, it will be the end of this era.
Hopefully, indeed.
It's amazing to me how fast and smooth these trains are... I also watch some LIRR (Long Island Railroad) and some Chicago videos, and those are very noisy and you almost feel every bump and switch. I think our light rail systems in the USA are way behind the times. About the only thing I'd say were somewhat "better" about US trains is that the tunnels or tubes are fairly well lighted in most areas. Seeing these absolutely dark tunnels was a bit unnerving to me.
And these trains are 50 years old! They've been serving London well but they'll be replaced next year.
this makes me so happy
Would be great to get captions for some of the convos we can't hear very well. The ones I could pick out were really interesting.
Smooth ride
I know the Piccadilly line trains are old, but they could at least bother to replace the bulbs every once in a while.
Super filmik. Pozdrawiam z Polski PL.
Nice video, thank you very much
25:18 ahhh, so when the tube stops randomly in a tunnel, it's so UA-camrs can get out and take photographs? Who knew.
Lovely moment though, kind of jealous.
The 1973 stock refurbishment pre-dates the JNP grouping - most if not all the trains were complete by the time Infraco JNP was formed in 2000. And ATP wasn't installed on them - at most there would have been passive provision but I doubt even that.
5:05 Going into a small tunnel... Haha, JK we're going into a _really_ small tunnel!
this has cheered me up
That was excellent!
That was PERFECT!!
I like this short film
Tony this is great footage of the Piccadilly line from Cockfosters to Heathrow Terminal 4. I grew up on this line, so much history to it. Where you able to make to Heathrow Terminal 5 also? 🎉 great job 👏🏻
Additional timestamp event: 37m 06s. A mouse pops out near left rail.
37:06
Those tunnels are so dark in-between stations. I don't even see light from the front of the train. What is the reason for that?
i think i might be one of a tiny proportion of drivers to drive a london underground train without working for london underground. (D78 stock class230 wrexham to bidston)
At the beginning how come there were so many signals every couple of hundred meters? you could see about 3 at the same time at one point? it it a place trains often queue up?
the eternal frustration watching the piccadilly line whizz by turnham green waiting for the district line 🤬🤬🤬
33:06 King's Cross
Great video, just a pity there is no station information on the screen
I don't remember a deep tube cab ride video that doesn't have the tunnels absolutely dark. They're really not lit aside from signals?
Where are the photos you took shown? On flickr? Loved this. The driver sounded more than obliging to the hobby 😁
That driver not got a clue about signalling on LU
The signals are different from the main line. What does a double green mean?
One is a repeater for the next signal
Wish there were lights in the tunnels
Did the train just straight-up run a red at 57:23?
It's just the orange light looks red in the camera. You can see the signal has a yellow plate, so it is a distant/repeater signal that cannot display red.
Why are there no lights on the tunnels?
Hey tony I’m going to the transport museum depot in Acton on the 29th of May will you be working there?
Not the 29th, no unfortunately.
your making me jealous it been years since I was last in a train cab
1:00:37 the signalling is the problem Tony which is what is preventing a daily service from Turnham Green it needs to be upgraded so they can increase the frequency even more although I think it's frequent enough I see them sailing through all the time in succession compared to the District line.
Thank you for the info :)
@@TransporterTonyI have a fact about the Piccadilly Line.
Interessante rit. Vierrailsysteem, complex . Niet afdekte stroomrail opmerkelijk.
Pleased can I use 3 mins of your footage, I will be happy to credit you,
How did you organise a cab ride?
I thought that the trains have lights on while in the tunnel
If there's foreign object detection, and the drivers can see signals, maybe that's why headlights are dimmed in the deep tube tunnels
I love the British accents so much.
Hello. Can someone tell me why there is a third rail on the Right or left side of the tracks?
And why is there a fourth rail in the middle of the track?
The rail in the centre of the track is the neutral rail for return current, the live rail is at the side of the track it can be either side. The train as pick up skids on both sides of its bogies/trucks.
Four tracks. 2 for Bogies (Trains wheels), one is LIVE Current, and the other is Return current path (Neutral).
Oh my , mechanical shunts
Bad head light at the train in the tunnel ?
All deep tube cab videos seem to have super dark tunnel sections
How did you manage to be let into the cab? Was it a nice driver or did TfL let you?
Officially arranged 👍
@@TransporterTony Who did you have to contact?
👍👍👍👍
it was pitch black at 11:02
Il faudrait traité la vidéo via un logiciel de montage pour éclaircir la vue en tunnel, car ont voit rien, c'est dommage.. et à refaire donc.
The tunnels are always like this all over the network. So they rely on signals to guide them and it's also mostly a straight run.
What IS THE DAY??
26.19 Arsenal...!!!
Gillespie Road!
nice ride,, belarst me anyways, not ONE graffitti drop anywheres
Will the new picadilly line trains be driverless like DLR?
They were supposed to be but won't be due to cuts

nice video? how did u get into the cab?
Through the door I guess.
@@nickdouglass421 your very funny 🥹
@WestLondonBusVisuals Pleased to be of service. One of my best.
What stock was this taken on?
1973 rolling stock
How were you able to film out the front?
Could have flagged up the stations you went through.
How were you able to get a cab ride?
He just stood on the side holding a bit of card saying ‘Heathrow’

The 1973 stock retires in 2025 goodbye 1973 stock

What if the new picadilly line trains were like DLR?
If you read the description you will see that they may not be driverless with the way the signalling will be left for those new ones
was this authorised or unathorised
Authorised he said under a precious comment
No no no no NO 54:32

Great facts but not so great that they carry the pitch black screen.

If you never fix up with the Platform door, I will not ride it.
You tube
This video is somewhat to be desired. Sure, you see the various stations as you pull in, but almost pitch black in between the stations in the tunnel. If I wanted to see that, I would simply turn my TV/monitor off. I couldn't watch anymore after 20 minutes. What a disappointing video!
Yes, tunnels tend to be very dark places...
What do you expect a UA-camr to do about the dark tunnels? LU only light the tunnels when power is shut off to the rails.
i will never understand why UK train drivers dont want to see whats ahead of them in the tunnels or at night.
Because it’s not necessary? Not as if you can swerve to avoid anything 😂
