In this guitar lesson video I will show you all the chords to John Lennon's beautiful song "Woman" from his 1980 album Double Fantasy.
This one is a little bit unorthodox. First off, you will need to tune your guitar to standard tuning then place a capo at the 1st fret. That is reasonably common, but what makes this Woman guitar lesson a little unusual is that you are going to have to move the capo up to the 2nd fret when the song modulates up a 1/2 step a little later in the song.
The good thing is that as soon as you move that capo up a fret, you won't have to learn anything new. You will play all the guitar parts exactly the same as when the capo was at the 1st fret.
When have 3 distinct guitar parts to learn in "Woman". The first will be the intro which is only heard once in the song. Getting the little melody within those chords to come out correctly is the most difficult part of the intro. I will explain how to do that. :)
After that we have the verse with it's simple down-up 8th note strumming. The chords move around quite quickly here so it makes for a great chord workout for those of you trying to perfect moving back and forth between open chords and bar chords. Remember that when I call out the chord names, I am comparing them to the position of the capo. That will be easier to understand after following along with the video lessons.
After that we have the arpeggio picked chorus. This is a very effective guitar part that creates some beautiful melody lines within the picking patterns. I will show you in detail the picking for each chord.
And as I stated before, later when the song modulates up a 1/2 step you will need to quickly move the capo up one fret and keep playing everything the same way. This is obviously only possible with a clamping style capo that enables you to quickly move it around.
Have fun learning this beautiful song from the irreplaceable John Lennon!
Carl...
This is one of my favorite John Lennon songs. This is from Johns alblum Double Fantasy. Double Fantasy was a album John and Yoko made together. It’s a very beautiful but sad song. Woman is a sad song because it was one of the last songs John Lennon recorded during his lifetime. Sadly just a few months later after he finished this album he was killed.
I couldn't have said it better.
Thanks for the lesson, I didn't really know what he was doing with that extra note on the arpeggios and this helped me once again thanks Carl.
Awesome. I figured this out on my own and thanks for showing the picking near the end. Very beautiful!
Simples mas , muito bom! Congratulações!
Love The Beatles and all of John's solo stuff! You should do New York Groove by Ace Frehley!
This is brilliant. Many thanks for this!
Excellent. Thanks. Such a beautiful - and in view of what happened - sad, song.
drutgat2 Yes this is a beautiful and sad song. It’s from John Lennon’s final solo album Double Fantasy. John Lennon and his wife Yoko made this album together. Although I only listen to John’s songs.
Excellent work. Thank you so much.
Gran tema gracias Carl

Thank you for doing a tutorial on this song! This is very helpful! Also, your guitar sounds almost exactly like the one used in the song, may I know what kind of guitar/effects you used?
FINALLY... an accurate vid for this song. Thanks.

thank you master.
awesome lesson can u make one for Scarborough fair by Paul Simon
my fav
We love ❤️ you Carl 😊
Thank you so much :)
Good lesson. Use the bridge/middle pickup position on your strat and it sounds pretty much like the guitar on the original recording.
I too love Woman but I've always played it without the capo, interesting!
Good Stuff There Earthling
Can you make a tutorial on as I am by dream theatre. Please......plzzzzzzzzzz....plzzzzz!!
I HV to prepare it for the school band!!!plzzz
hey, which one is it that need to play before the chorus? A or the strum in 6.35? I’m confused!
Beautifully done, beautiful song. But at what point do I move the capo when I a. Strumming? Sorry if my question seems silly.
+Angel Martinez The modulation happens at about the 2:22 mark :)
@@GuitarLessons365SongLessons First off, terrific lesson and terrific sound. Dead-on, from what I can tell. But you did lose me at 'just move the capo.' It's simply impractical to attempt during a live performance. Not that I have performed live ever, but I've been playing for 22 years, and I know what it takes to move a capo. It takes dead silence, and it takes away momentum. I'm not sure if John literally got away with that during recording, but there has to be another (likely less comfortable) way to perform it continuously like the key change in And I Love Her (which incidentally permits us that wonderful final D Major chord.)
Please understand, I truly mean you no disrespect. You're great, and you truly perform a service for humanity in sacrificing your time to share your talents. The Capo move is just impractical..
Jaerivus McGuillicutti no telling how it would have been performed live since he tragically never had the chance, but it was definitely recorded with a capo at two different frets during the original recording. No way around that.. but lucky for us, these days they do make capos that roll up and down the fretboard allowing you to move it within the flow of the music without missing a beat...
@@GuitarLessons365SongLessons Then I suppose I should look into one! Haha
Nice one Carl. But in my video, I didn't move the Capo to the 2nd fret. I suspected John played the fingerings different and didn't move the Capo. Now, when it modulates the arpeggios actually become trickier to play.
+Oliver Oliver I just continue the strum on the chorus I find it easier try that
What do you mean?
The strum he uses on the verse just carry it on through the chorus
John Lennon didn't play any of the electric guitars on this song. There were three guitar players, he played acoustic. Earl Slick and Hugh McCracken played electric. I suspect the chorus part was never played with a capo, but I'm not sure.
can you make the intro for the we will rock you. i know you did the solo but the intro ??
btw awesome video
Haha I believe the extent of the guitar in We Will Rock You is literally just the solo. Everything before it is just thumps, claps, and Freddie Mercury. Well, there's a good amount of feedback, if you were wanting to learn how to do that.
Hey Carl. Was wondering if this is possible to be played on acoustic and still sound nice?
+WintaxGames ofc it 'd be sound nice
thx thx thx!!!!
do mumford and sunds - ditmas tutorial !! please :)

how do you move the capo while playing ? duh !
Do you HAVE to have a capo??
it'll make it a lot easier to play if you have a quick release trigger capo that you could just slide it up for a key change..
and then literally play the same exact thing you played up until the modulation...
Woman by John Lenin. Lol
Screw the Capo play it in standard tuning
sure just missed the modulation no problem play whatever way you want..
Carl's just showing if you want to play it like on the album all you do is take your simple trigger like a kyser capo..take your picking hand and just reach over and shove it up a front after you stop a card it takes less than a half a second..
you're not trying to figure out Darwin's theory of evolution
Instructions, nice a slow so anyone can understand 👍🏽
