non muted line outs are awesome. its much easier to mute them if you need to, than to make them not mute! if you wanna mute line outs use a mixer or something like that. its not a big deal
I actually kinda like the idea of not muting the monitors when having headphones in. It means you can keep both plugged in and very quickly switch between them while mixing. Sometimes it’s useful to be able to switch on the fly if you’re listening for something very specific. That said, they probably could have added a configuration setting for that. I can understand why that behavior might be a little odd for some.

ok, its name is "Solo", but imagine you are in the mixing/monitoring room and your singer or guitarist is in the recording booth. then it is quite handy that you can hear the sound from the studio monitors while the artist is wearing headphones.
@@cali6662 That's why they created the 2i2 and other models. It's not dumb because this interface is targeted for one user. The person that is recording one track at a time who, like me, doesn't want to pay extra for multiple inputs. So, who's the dumb one now?
@@jreagle58 it's still dumb, even if you are alone, you would need to unplug your headphones to listen to the monitors everytime, the second gen got the "problem" fixed years ago, so yeah, dumb, also, you don't get less outputs nor extras, so you aren't saving up much, also you are dumb to think that an input goes to the speaker.
Not all applications of an interface are going to be for a studio mon/phones output. For example we use the interface as a standalone playback system for live events, corporate, broadcast, etc. In those cases we don’t want the cans output to automatically mute the main output. Having the option in software would be great though for those that do need that functionality. I’d agree the interface is a fantastic value and in many high end applications is more than adequate.
Excellent review. I have to respectfully disagree on the headphones/back output issue. For me it has been super convenient. Whenever I need headphones only, I just turn off the monitors. If I want monitors sound, I turn them on and listen through them. Keep up the good work!

dude is there an interview about this guy, what music ahe listens to or anything of that nature. i really would like to know. i think he's a really cool person
Without having a dedicated headphone volume knob you would need to have the outputs connected to a mixer so you co mute the monitor volume whilst recording with headphone.
I have this same interface and just upgraded to a Shure SM7B and was having a hard time finding out whether I would really need to purchase a cloudlifter or not because I figured the preamp would be good enough. Thanks for addressing that specific combo

Hey would you please let me know ir it was necessary for you to get the Cloudlifter?
Please do a full comparison table for the inputs and the main outputs (like the headphone outputs) please......!!!! Doesn't matter if people don't understand the numbers the green to red colors are just gold..!!!
Thank you for your extremely thorough review!!! I've just ordered it as a bit of an impulse purchase, not knowing much about it, but you've given me that extra bit of reassurance I needed!!!
Hey, good review. I like the fact that it sends audio through headphones and line out at the same time. This means that I can send the signal to a mixerboard or other analog audio at the same time as using headphones. Great if you're a "gamer/streamer" with a two PC setup.
They should definitely have separate volume knobs for both the headphones and the monitors. It's pretty standard. There should at least be a way to disable output for monitors without having to unplug them from the interface.
I just purchased this today - thank you for a very good and detailed review of this audio interface. Also it includes Pro Tools and Ableton Lite DAW which is fantastic!
What I like with the Solo is the ability to use a DBX286 with all of its features...too bad you didn't talk about the line-in feature as I think it offers a much better recording experience. I run a Heil PR40 into the Solo even though I have a SM7B. The only thing I didn't like about the Solo is the lack of mix to mono when your recording software doesn't offer this feature when using the line-in. My Centrance Micport pro has a mix to mono output. For the price it's a fantastic unit.
Absolute amazing tutorial! Gave me all the information I needed + some info I didn't understand at all lol Thank you so much for the great video! Subscribed :D
Thank you for the review! How does the headphone output compare to the 2i2 3rd gen? Is the headphone output distortion, when using low impedance headphones, the same on the 2i2?
I have an argument for you about the speakers muting when the headset is plugged in. I have a 2 pc setup for streaming and I run the main usb-c to a to my streaming pc and turn monitoring on, from here I can use an adaptor to make it a single 3.5mm and run it to the mic input on my gaming pc so i can use 2 mic outs one over usb the other from back speakers to mic input this allows me to still monitor my stream audio well i am streaming others you cant so that with or it mutes the stream when the inputs is switched that was stream breaking for me. and i only use it to check my auto levels. so thats an option for the scarlett that i use a lot and would not know what todo with out as I cant do this with lot of the others. this also allows me to mute my mic in game by pressing the monitor bottom. before i for this device i had to run 2 different mics to get this result vary happy with it all in all. great video love the content hope you read this comment its a one of a kind device and it has a great use case for streamers on a budget.
Nice review! Think I'll go with this instead of Komplete Audio 2, the Scarlett red looks awesome. Also I thought you were faking the accent in the first 5 seconds lol

I'm trying to find a decent USB interface to do some vocals in simple software like Ableton Live and even Audacity and it's usually interfaces like the Scarletts and Behringer UMC-series that are readily available where I live. Your channel is probably going to help me make up my mind
I can confirm the unbearable distortion with lower impedance headphones. I have HD 380 Pros which have a resistance of 60 ohms plugged into the Solo 3rd Gen and the sound is absolutely horrendous, especially system sounds.
A Simple Mute or Volume Controls for the Line Outputs would be good. Some people like me use this in a different configuration so I require BOTH Headphones and Line Outs to work at any give time. Me: Types out a long comment thanking you Also me: hmmmmm (deletes the whole comment) All I wanna say is, Thank you :) was stuck deciding on which audio interface to get and your review just sold it perfectly.
I like that the outputs aren't muted when you plugin headphones. It would be more difficult to check your takes if after every take you had to unplug your headphones. Much easier to just mute the main ouput.
Love your videos! I am planning on getting the Behringer UMC202HD because that is the only audio interface within my budget. I was planning on using it with some amp modelling software like BIAS FX. Do you think it's a good get? I saw your video on the product, but the latency issues that might arise from adding a few effects on the pc wasn't mentioned. Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks for the detailed reviews!
I can't answer from experience cause ive just ordered my focusrite and plan on getting bias. I'd recommend it if you plan on using it to practice with, apparently they're not great live which makes sense. I don't think the latency will be to big of a problem as it's a direct input and if your PC is decent. Sorry I can't really say much else though
I beg to differ on "preferring to automatically mute external speakers when putting on headphones'. I prefer my bass cabinets rumbling the floor while using USB headphones for fidelity. Hard to find options that run both outputs at once.
Hi, thanks for all of the detailed information. I want to ask if you have any high-empedance and closed-back headphone recommendations for this interface.I've bought this and currently I am looking for a studio headphone, The Beyerdynamic dt770 80 ohm version seemed okay to me because of the higher empedance but i liked Sennheiser HD 280 pro's sound profile better. It is an 64 ohm headphone and I am not sure if its gonna work with scarlett solo gen 3. Do you think it would affect the sound quality? Is there anyone using these headphones with scarlett solo 3rd gen in, can you guys share your experience with that? thanks in advance!
You're probably one of the most professional reviewers I've seen on UA-cam. Very concise! The reason I watched this is for information about the headphone jack impedance, of which, you were the only person out of the 10+ videos I've watched to give this. Thank you for your knowledge.
Hi. Plugging headphones shouldn’t disconnect outputs. Because outputs can connect the unit to mixer or anything else in different scenarios. If you want to disable your monitors, simply turn them off :)
Nah I'm with him on that, when your mixing in the headphones why would you want the monitors on?.. he makes sense imo... do you know if there is a way to turn of the outputs on the unit when you only want to hear it through the headphones?
Hi Julian, I am a big fan of your work! You are doing a great job! What is the best solution for headphones with 2i2 3rd gen? I have ATH M40X and 2i2, and the distortion is pretty audible on higher volumes. Should I get an amp and headphones with higher Ohms? What do you recommend?
For a relatively cheap bit of kit, the 2i2 is an impressive piece of equipment. Unless it fails I doubt I would be moving to the 3 but it looks like a good buy for anyone needing a new device.
Can you still activate & register it under your name and have access to the softwares (Ableton Live, Pro-Tools, etc), if you get a used Focusrite unit, even the previous owner had already registered it under his/her name and downloaded ALL the software?. Thanks a lot in advance for the facts and not a mere opinion when replying!
me too, i would prefer he shows data sheets or something the whole time instead of face to cam talking. Im not here to admire any humans but to see facts about a product.
Great video, as usual. Congrats! One think I'll do to overcome doubling audio output to monitors when headphones are plugged in, will be by not ditching my Big Knob audio attenuator. Hopefully it doenst add to much noise to the signal, but I'll be saving quite a few dozen Euros. Cheers from Protugal, mate!
Awesome review! Thanks for this! Just curious, though. I was thinking of replacing my bass amp with this one. Will this be powered up by a power bank instead of a laptop?
Thank you so much for being so informative it really helps. I'm dabbling with mixing my music and trying figure this out, do you think that the beyerdynamic 770s 250 ohm will still sound good directly in the scarlett solo or will I need a headphone amp? I'm considering the 80 ohm but don't want to sacrifice sound quality.

I like that the outputs aren't muted when you plugin headphones. It would be more difficult to check your takes if after every take you had to unplug your headphones. Much easier to just mute the main ouput.
Great job! Thank you
Julian best independent tester 👍 Super! thks😉😎
This is an amazing review, great stuff. Do you have a table somewhere comparing the RTL of each interface you've tested?
I beg to differ on "preferring to automatically mute external speakers when putting on headphones'. I prefer my bass cabinets rumbling the floor while using USB headphones for fidelity. Hard to find options that run both outputs at once.
6:59 Says the solo is enough, while having it set to 100%
Hi, thanks for all of the detailed information.
Great review but your need to have the outputs muted when headphones are plugged in is unique to you. It just doesn't make sense dude.
Nah I'm with him on that, when your mixing in the headphones why would you want the monitors on?.. he makes sense imo... do you know if there is a way to turn of the outputs on the unit when you only want to hear it through the headphones?
@@neffone77 monitors don't have IO switches?
Hi Julian, I am a big fan of your work! You are doing a great job! What is the best solution for headphones with 2i2 3rd gen? I have ATH M40X and 2i2, and the distortion is pretty audible on higher volumes. Should I get an amp and headphones with higher Ohms? What do you recommend?
For a relatively cheap bit of kit, the 2i2 is an impressive piece of equipment. Unless it fails I doubt I would be moving to the 3 but it looks like a good buy for anyone needing a new device.
Incredible review. Not just opinions,, but statistics and proper testing. Excellent job man, very helpful!
Pro tip: when videoing a dark subject it's good to use a mid tone background.
TL;DR - can't see shit on the front panel!
?
Can you still activate & register it under your name and have access to the softwares (Ableton Live, Pro-Tools, etc), if you get a used Focusrite unit, even the previous owner had already registered it under his/her name and downloaded ALL the software?. Thanks a lot in advance for the facts and not a mere opinion when replying!
good review except you creep the hell out of me
me too, i would prefer he shows data sheets or something the whole time instead of face to cam talking.
So do you get full versions of the focusrite RED suite?
Btw focusrite could of put a xlr+1/4 jack
Awesome review! Thanks for this! Just curious, though. I was thinking of replacing my bass amp with this one. Will this be powered up by a power bank instead of a laptop?
what does air mode even do??
I thought I knew a few things about audio interfaces, but jeez. I learned a lot. Thanks man. Great review.
I have a problem, i have to push de gain knob to the maximun to hear my condencer micro, (and yes, the 48v is on)
