I think you nailed it with this video! Another critical use for feathering braid from a spinning reel is when you are using a popping cork. You can get the lure on the cork to lay out and land just before the cork, and straighten out the line also so you can start popping the cork, especially when it is windy. Often fish hit right away and if you don’t feather, you don’t get that fish. I proved this last week on the Texas flats big time!
My PB redfish 43” 37lbs was caught with a 2500 spinning reel w/ 10lb braid on a medium/light rod! We were catching school size trout and Bam! Absolutely amazing fight and memory.
Great information, I see lots of anglers that have no idea how to set drag to not break line. I have been known to frequent 4 to 8 pound test and pulling in fish 15+.
Great info…i m on the beach right now because my right knee has both misicus tears and ACL partial tear. I get my saltwater fix vicariously thru you UA-cam videos
Really good video, CA. Doubling the line at the end of the braid to leader connection is a fantastic idea. I hear that knot going through the guides on my casting gear all the time and I’m really looking forward to seeing if balancing the knot will reduce that.
Hooked an 80lb tarpon last week on 10lb braid fishing for other fish. Didn’t land it since was on a #1 light hook with 30 lb leader, but was one hell of a fight on full drag 2500 shimano spin reel with 100 yard smoking runs before leader broke at hook. 10 lb braid held strong.
You definitely got it right. Unfortunately almost every trip I will at some point be targeting large snook on the docks on the intercoastal here on the east coast. Like you said you just can’t give them an oz of drag or it’s over with heartbreak 😂
I use 20lb inshore and 30-40 for surf fishing. Works great for me. Might have to try out 10lb. Always dark green or brown line since our water is dirty in Texas.
@flatsclasscharters hey captain C.A i got a question for ya. Im coming down to florida in June for a week and will be fishing alot. Im just getting back into fishing so only have 2 good rod setups atm. One 6'6 medium custom rod with a 2500 daiwa fuego. The other is a 7' mh shimano curado spinning rod with a 4000 miravel on it. I am wanting to make sure i have a setup for some bigger top water baits and stuff. Suggestions or tips? Also at this point im a spinning reel guy havent gotten into the casting reels yet.
I'm with you on the 10 lb braid. I use it 99% of the time. Between a medium action and a medium light 7 rods with 10 lb braid I catch almost all my fish. Most of the time I toss jig heads and soft plastics or weedless rigs and soft plastics (Texas Eye, SnakeEyes), sometimes with a popping cork. With those two different action rods I can do all that or toss plugs. I have a 15 and a 20 lb braid rigs but don't use them much. 10 does it for me until I hit the pier for cobia. Then 20 and 40 come into play.
CA what knot do you tie in the boat when u r in the middle of feeding frenzy and your client breaks off the leader? Do you tie the same time consuming knot or do you throw on a surgeon’s knot to get them back in the game faster?
Cool. I used 6 lb test mono for years at the beach for snook and stuff. No problem. Now I use 10 lb braid but I want to get a setup for 6 lb mono again.
I find game fish will set the hook themselves with out the need for bass master hook sets. I let them have the bait then simply raise the tip of my rod.
I can say for beach fishing: Pompano/redfish/drum/whiting don't care about the color of your line. I have 20lb (due to flinging 3+ oz weights on 12 and 15' poles) bright orange line. Pelicans, jetskis, swimmers, and boaters can see it. Go high vis (neon yellow/pink/orange) and you'll get less morons in your line.
great video. I am once again requesting a baitcaster maintenance video. The good people of UA-cam need this! 😄

Bill appreciate the added advice and info… thanks for your support

That’s an awesome share for us… and yes an incredible memory

Sorry to hear about those knee issues… but so glad we have you as I loyal subscriber my friend
Very helpful buddy! Thank you for more insight on those!

Doubling the braid for the FG knot. Thats an interesting idea, never heard that suggestion before, I’ll try it tomorrow, thanks!
I think he said "if you're not using the fg knot." He's shown this before with Albright and uni knots.
I agree with you 100% on this. Got all 4 setups with 10lbs PEx4 for open water and PEx8 around the jetty and structures.
Totally agree on the 10 pound braid ! A 44" striped bass hit while I was fishing for trout, no problem on 10 lb braid.
What area do you fish?
@@flatsclasscharters Cape May County , NJ

Yes, once again it’s hard to put more than 10 pounds of unrelenting pressure on a fish especially with a rod designed for the flats
Could you show how you are folding braid when tying a Albright or FG knot?
You definitely got it right. Unfortunately almost every trip I will at some point be targeting large snook on the docks on the intercoastal here on the east coast. Like you said you just can’t give them an oz of drag or it’s over with heartbreak 😂
Yep lost too many that way. 30 lb braid is minimum for me. 30-40lb leader too.
Caught a 16in permit, brdige fishing, on 10lbs diamond braids with 20lbs mono leader- had to flip it, did not have landing net. 7' medium rod
A testimonial,
I love it
Thanks Captain, next video can you talk about how often to change out your braid for inshore fishing and can you inspect braid for weak points?
I use 20lb inshore and 30-40 for surf fishing. Works great for me. Might have to try out 10lb. Always dark green or brown line since our water is dirty in Texas.
Great video, very informative!

That’s definitely the program for sure in most scenarios

I know this is past your video but I want to know if you ever used a 13 braid cigar I'm at suffix
I use 8 lb mono would 30 lb test leader Montefiore never missed a fish never have my 8 lb test snap on a fish
Braid is by far always stronger than you expect and does an amazing job controlling fish under strain
Cool. I used 6 lb test mono for years at the beach for snook and stuff. No problem. Now I use 10 lb braid but I want to get a setup for 6 lb mono again.
@@comfortablynumb9342try that fishing docks in tidal waters 😂
I used fluorescent braid with no leader for the first time this year and nailed fish all day. They didn't seem to care about the line color at all.
What reel is that you showed?
Shimano Vanford
Thank you
The problem with braid is the abrasion resistance. If around structure or bottom it will break and break quickly

Reeling into them! Definitely works 💯
That's why they put a drag on a real
Yes definitely helps buffer the tension!
I've found I can tie knots easier with 4 carrier braid than the 8 carrier. Some of the 8 carrier brands are so soft it's like tieing with thread

I fish at night 100 percent of the time
Meanwhile I use 8 pound braid lol 😂
You got that long (casting) game going on!
