  • Do your parents still treat you like you are still a child?
Do they guilt you into getting what they want? Or do they use threats or other manipulation strategies?
Do you feel ill or have other overwhelming physical or emotional feelings after seeing your parents?
Do you just feel like you will never live up to your parents’ expectations?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might have grown up with a toxic parent.
Parents are human beings and that means that we may make mistakes, but it is time for us to do better.

A Lot to learn, education has no age limit life experiences but the village environment we grew in really my parents tried for sure especially my mother, rest in peace😢 but she taught me how to be observant about children especially being sensitive with the girl child. Not leaving them at large but being protective from men spoiling them at an early age. And showing them the way of the Lord.

I was a very toxic mother. Raising my son single handedly having been betrayed by dad, I quarrelled, I shouted, I spanked but after receiving Jesus, I'm a work in progress. So far, so good. All the above, I no longer do them. I learnt to extend grace.

This episode just reminded me of what Barbra said but I had forgotten. I read it somewhere "Heal so as you don't bleed on those that didn't hurt you". I haven't become a mother yet and I have always seen things that my mum could have done better but now I see and realize that she did whatever she did the way she thought was better according to the way she was raised. And I have really made a bigger decision that I will correct whatever I felt as a kid that wasn't right to be a better parent when that time comes. I want a family where kids will always feel happy and want to come home to see me not because they have to. These episodes are really preparing me to do better.

Ladies ladies, always lovely to see you bring all the energy. Beverley's enthusiasm and depth on things just woke up the vibrant person I used to be, a person I had tucked away. Thank you all for sharing your lives with us.
I want to travel to various places, just for the experience, I always loved Europe specifically Scandinavian countries. Fortunately for me, I was raised by a liberal dad, a strict dad on responsibility but nothing toxic; communication was something he emphasizes and it has worked throughout the year. I, however, saw my maternal relatives be so helicopter to this day to their 35+ year-olds; it is crazy. That opening doors was normal, searches through our bags, books, etc. My mother ( r.i.p ) was really like Barbara, she took us everywhere at any time even places we had no business being. It was cool some days but not all days, she smothered us and I had a small stint of parenting my parent at this stage.
Emotional dysregulation as if the parent and child are peers. Train and let them go; they will get it right someday. There is a thin line between love and smothering. Why do I feel like no matter what we do, we shall still be toxic at some point. Ah!

The bigger question after this discussion is " How do you deal with toxic parents" as a child?? We all know that you can never win against a parent because of the power dynamic and omuzadde tasobya even the Bible says clearly that we should HONOUR them. 😮

    • @n.sophie2001
      @n.sophie2001 Місяць тому +7

As someone who has been raised by a manipulative mother, what I normally do is to let her say whatever she feels like and I only take and do what I feel is right because right now I am a 23y/o adult who really can distinguish between what is right and wrong but as a child I just used to keep quiet, cry or even sometimes what helped me is that at times we could meet with my big siblings and we could share"talk about her" etc. That is really something that scares me looking back and I really don't want my kids to experience the same or meet to discuss about me as a mother😢. At times I try to talk to her about it since I am grown but still she brings in the manipulative technique that she mastered well and the moment I sense it, I just make my brain turn off and I do self-counselling and reminder.

@@n.sophie2001mine made a promise to herself to treat me like a teenager up to 24 years, wasn't allowed to even hang out with my half siblings on my dad's side it had to be her family no friends. She tried to make go to kyambogo I didn't want bse at makerere was given evening and to her that was going to be dangerous to move dat time told her to go to hostel it was like war thank God she allowed me. It was always sch home could call u had to finish the paper at 12 no it's 2 wc friend s are u with, in her mind ever it's men and with many times accused me for it maybe thought was protecting me but now clocking 26 and am still in pain she took y whole stage of life what hurts is seeing my younger brother do everything I wished as her funding it she didn't even allow me close to my dying sis all in the name protection. Thank you ladies for the beautiful insights here. A perfect parent and perfect child doesn’t exist but The word of God when correctly interpreted goes along way in simplifying this relationship.
Children, respect your parents. Parents do not provoke your children.
In all things extend grace and do all you do from a Place of love, love is kind, patient etc Parents be kind to your children and do not spare the rode, being stewards of his creation ask God for direction and conviction.
Parenting well is impossible without the leadership of God’s principals.

African/ugandan parents feel owning their children and this thing of paying them back for the work they were entitled to do as parents has been a discussion i have had with several people that always never ended well because they were of the view I am very Westernised. Am grateful that its African women ,ugandan women on Ugandan soils discussing this topic. I think we are in the right direction. I pray we get better as Africans.

Mind the questions you ask people they shouldn't be so personal.
Don't be tempted to ask about things people can't change they sound offensive.
Learn when to ask and to withhold or keep your question till wen the time is right
Sometimes if you are intentional about withholding some questions people will seek to tell you before you even ask them. This will better your relationships

Manuela's input, when she said she lives vicariously through her chidren reminds me of the story of two brothers in the US who grew up and killed their mum and dad. The parents according to the boys were toxic. These boys grew up privileged however, the parents made them do things they did not desire to do but did because the parent's forced them. They were only two children so the parent's gave them all however, these boys said they could not breath or be like normal kids. So as they grew older, sports activities and keeping their grades up, they got tired .They said their parents were living through thrm. The boy's were only a year apart when you see them, they look like twins. They plotted and killed their parents. Actually the mum died from her injeries but their dad survived.

The owe thing is the really toxic one ,me personally I remind my mum that it's is he role to do her duties though me and my bond is intertwined that every one understand each other that wen we HV a complain for each other we HV a stable ground were one accepts it and grow and hv seen the difference in having a bond than owing thing to every thing

The experience of a toxic parent is terrible...some of us now look at our mothers as strangers....the toxicity is too much that we leave life as though we don't have them.my mother will choose a cousin of me.
