  • Health update - Dianna's illness has caused her to go on an extreme elimination diet. Here, Kyle explains a little about the foods she can eat. Dianna has developed a wide variety of symptoms most commonly associated with MCAS. She and Kyle have been working with a specialist for months to get her on a path to recovery.

To Brian: while waiting for my husband to finish dialysis at the clinic, I heard on the radio of a program FOR caregivers. This was in the beginning when it was all new, and so damn hard. It was talking about a caregivers getaway. I cried while sitting in the parking lot. If you have never been there, you don’t have a clue. The illness hits the whole family, but mainly the spouse. You forget what it is like to have time for you. To take a leisurely bath. To eat a slow meal. Granted, I’d do it again if I could have him back with me. Plus, he didn’t like to be alone. God bless all the caregivers. Love you all.

To the people who are commenting saying she needs to eat more and saying she has fatigue and the fatigue is caused by her not having protein, that’s not the issue. She has MCAS Mass Cell Activation Syndrome. Which causes her to have symptoms of anaphylaxis. So due to her condition she has to be very careful about what she puts into her body so she doesn’t have an allergic response. They also do see a specialist and work with them to find a diet she can safely eat while still getting proper nutrition. It may not be perfect but they do what they need to so her condition doesn’t affect her.

I struggle with autoimmune problems. A few months ago I decided to go on a carnivore/animal-based diet. After six months I tried to re-introduce corn back into my diet, and my reaction to it was not good. [Great husband, please read this to Dianna]
As someone who has almost entirely recovered from CFS, against the odds, please note the following...
When Dianna recovers, and on her journey of recovery, we MUST NOT want her to have that same extreme energy that she had before. She must understand from us that it's OK for her to be normal. She'll be of tremendous value even then, be sure of that.
Part of her recovery is to know that she's not aiming for that overdriven state that she was in before.
I was told this about myself by an excellent neurologist in London in ~2001, Dr Kapoor, but it took me until 2012 to understand it properly, not least because everyone expected me to be like I was before.
    Like Dianna was before.
My trigger was different, but the results were similar. Just a year before I was struck down, colleagues said of me that I had endless energy; that I could work almost indefinitely without a break.
Let's help her heal by helping her understand that we love her however she is. She doesn't have to be like she was before; in fact we won't want that. We want her to be sustainably healthy. She'll still be amazing. She'll need to change her expectations of herself, and that will be a long and difficult task.
She will recover. With our help.
One great thing is that her great work was captured on UA-cam. I sincerely hope that her great work is preserved for eternity. We should not assume that she can simply recreate it.
The scientific brain wants to break everything down; identify the exact cause of the problem, fix it, and get back to exactly as before, like when fixing a racing car or some software. But that approach doesn't work with CFS. It's a more holistic thing than that. It seems to involve the whole body-brain interaction deciding for itself whether what it's doing is in its own best interest.
She can't ignore what we think, so let's be sure to think what's best for her.
    xx

seeing a lot of people recommending exercise so just a reminder that if you're diagnosed with moderate-severe ME/CFS like she is exercise is VERY dangerous and not at all recommended. I'm much less disabled than Dianna and my specialist (Dr. Susan Levine) said that she wouldn't be able to do PT with me because of how low my exertion tolerance was. If a patient with severe CFS reaches Post Exertional Malaise (PEM, or a "crash" as many of us call it) it's almost guaranteed to make them worse. I attempted PT when I was first diagnosed because it was (incorrectly) recommended to me and it nearly caused me to become bedbound. We're now finding out that rarely people who are already in a very severe state might crash so hard that their organs fail because they don't have enough energy to keep going. I know the default for every condition is "exercise and you get better!", but please don't encourage Dianna to hurt herself in the name of getting back to making videos.

Im almost 3 years past the onset of my symptoms and I'm only now starting to recover from the initial damage i did trying to push myself.
Low impact stretching and assisted stretching (having a physiotherapist move your body for you) has helped a lot with my pain and mobility. But fatigue is the hardest thing to break. I just cant do much before hitting a wall where I'm just not present or capable anymore.

genuine question is this fatigue just in your head and could you say power through it with I don't know painkillers and "enhancers" or is it "really physical"? Sounds strange I know and I'm not trying to produce a therapy here, I was just wondering can people die from it, or would it be the circumstances of laying in bed all time (no movements, infections and so on)? Also, what would happen if you took something which alters your mind, the usual stuff you know? Could you simply "forget" to have this illness?

    • @TheWheelBry
      @TheWheelBry Рік тому +168

@@climatixseuchet isn't "just in your head". That idea is what is so damaging to the ME/CFS community, but I understand you were asking a genuine question. The fatigue is nothing like tiredness or sleepiness, it's like all energy is being stripped from your body so things that you don't really think about like breathing and moving become the effort of if someone else did 1000 pushups. So you can't push through, and yes, unfortunately people with the most severe forms of ME/CFS have and do die. The condition is just not well enough understood because people think its just "all in the head". Hope that clears things up a bit.
Also, exercise (eg powering through) has been suggested as a treatment and it does so much more damage than good.

A trick if she has trouble swallowing pills and capsules, put a little oil, I usually use flax seed oil, in a spoon, put a few pills or capsules in it and coat them well with the oil, and then have them take the oil and pills together. The oil coating keeps them from sticking in the throat.
And as a caregiver and nanny, I say hubby gets a gold medal, it looks like he's truly caring for her.

@@saulemaroussault6343 the specific person I was helping when I thought of using the oil, the large pills and capsules would stick on their esophagus wall and basically stay there until they dissolved, which was very painful for them, they were on some strong stuff in the hospital.
Water based substances weren't helping, because things were swollen and gelatin is just sticky when wet, but the oil keeps the capsule or coating dry, and thus not sticky, until it gets digested off in the stomach.
So yes, applesauce etc is a good option for normal situations, and the little applesauce cups are great for it, but if they are having them actually stick, the oil really seems to prevent that.
And I suppose you could also coat them with butter, or something thicker as well if needed.

Hey! Person with ME/CFS symptoms for almost 20 years here. I'm sure you have many people telling you what to do, unfortunately there aren't many practitioners that we can trust and people like to advocate about what worked for them. I don't want to be that person, I just want to share a breakthrough I had in case this might be helpful to you. I am still thankful to Yasmina Ykelestam who in a call told me to check oxalates and she had a feeling that it could be what was harming me the most. Back in 2014 I was really bad, always loosing weight and extremely tired and fatigued. Beddridden. I went to all doctors, nutritionists, etc. Lost 14 kg. After talking with her, I went back to my OAT tests and I oxalates were really high. I also knew I was reacting to FODMAPS, salycilates, gluten, dairy and eggs. After I stopped eating buckwheat toast and persimmon, I gained 3 kilos in a month, in time for my birthday. The oxalates were burdening my system, so in a few weeks I was able to go from 5 foods to 20, including kefir (from a specific brand, as it sometimes depends on the microbiome of the kefir). The diet you give her is very high in salycilates and oxalates - I'm not saying her problem is like mine, but these foods overload her liver a lot, but the bottleneck might be in other place. I'm happy to help in any way, I'm not a practitioner or anything, but I can share what I learned and what worked for me, or even direct you to some specialists or resources. Good luck!

She took salt tablets for electrolytes and we moved her to a window to get vitamin D and eventually moved her outside. Pistachios are not really that good for you if you read about them. They can mess up your kidneys. Eat walnuts.

If you or your child are sick and nothing is helping, perhaps it’s time you consider lack of bioavailable nutrition. How could such a simple change affect health? If you are not getting the right kind of amino acids, or you are missing trace minerals your body can not make the proper hormones which control all aspects of your human health including tissue repair. Cholesterol is crucial to proper neurological functioning.

It's easy to end up missing some key nutrients when on a limited-ingredient diet, be sure to consider supplements like multivitamins and amino acids and so on, especially things like B12 and D3. Nutrient shortages can really put a crimp in recovery.
Also we probably still don't know everything the body needs for full health, so consider rotating ingredients to cover more bases rather than hope that a single strict limited-ingredient diet is necessarily going to be complete even if it looks that way when analyzed on paper.

    • @kettunainen
      @kettunainen 7 місяців тому +4

Agreed. Adding D Drops to get D3 would work, since she can have coconut milk, and it uses a coconut oil base.
Butternut squash and apples are medium and high FODMAPS, respectively, which increase Mast Cell activity: Kabocha, Buttercup, Hubbard, and Delicata are low FODMAP, low histamine, and keto, and blueberries are low FODMAP, low histamine, and keto. FODMAPS also increase joint pain.
Adenosylcobalamin is the best form of B12 plus Folinic Acid. Both of these will help to stabilize mast cell activity. Methylcobalamin and methyl folate are better than cyanocobalamin and folic acid, but if she has symptoms of over-methylation, then switching to adenosylcobalamin would be best, especially for memory issues and anything to do with nerves (like parasthesias), since it helps the myelin sheath to function. Hydroxycobalamin is best for macrocytic anemia.
I’ve been struggling with a restrictive diet for a few months from symptoms of MCAS. My daughter has long-COVID and likely moderate ME/CFS.
The D Drops are super easy to take. The folinic acid and adenosylcobalamin are sublingual so there are no pills to swallow. I also take calcium carbonate and magnesium citrate in powder form. Calcium carbonate is neutral-tasting enough that it could be added to the coconut smoothie. YMMV
Healing is such hard work, and I’m so grateful for all the work being done by Kyle and Dianna and other support people. Dianna is always worth it.

She’s on the limited diet bc it’s the only foods she doesn’t have allergic reactions to. So rotating ingredients may not be possible. With mcas, we can also be allergic to ingredients in medications and supplements and most of us have to get those specially compounded at a special pharmacy, which is costly. B12 and D3 are both good recs as those are lacking a lot in those with mcas (those help process histamine and we have too much histamine)- but she’d have to get it prescribed and maybe compounded (I have to get both prescribed so they’re pure with no fillers).
I’m really hoping she gains back foods like I did- I was down to only 3 foods in 2020, but gained most back the next year.

These symptoms remind me of a woman i heard describe her experiences when she got sick while she was in a Pfizer trial, and i think she was kicked out of the trial because of the symptoms. I really hope and pray, Diana makes a quick recovery, it is so sad she has been suffering from this so long.

After watching her UA-cam channel for the last couple years, I feel like I sort of understood her a little. I enjoyed her vibrancy, warmth, intelligence, charisma and gift of sharing fascinating things with us. It breaks my heart to see her like this 😢. She has definitely not aired in her personal life as well, if she landed a husband as loving and caring as you. God bless both of you with the strength to complete recovery for her.

Companies like Nutricia would be really worth looking into if you haven't already. Pre tube feeding I was one some of their meal replacements which are designed for people who can't eat or are medically fragile for whatever reason. They have non diary options too or juice options if thicker fluids are a problem. It can help keep the weight on. 💛

I was on disability and bedridden as well.
I now have a part time job and a dog.
I still have bad days, weeks, and months.
One of the primary factors in my recovery was supplements. But doctors don't prescribe those 🤷‍♀️
Good luck to her and please stay on top of nutrition (especially iron, potassium, magnesium, and D)!

I have post covid Cluster headaches. During the winter, I had them continually for 3 months, until I went to Vegas. For some reason the pressure/humidity there changed something. I went an entire week without any clusters.
I hope the specialist is able to help. I'm seeing about 4 myself and on a bunch of meds for it, but the fact that going there made me not have any was really eye opening about things that can cause inflammation.
Anyway, this comment isn't to center myself. I wanted to say that just in case something that is causing her inflammation could also be weather /allergens where you are. I don't know what region you live in, but I'm in the Midwest, and because of this, I've considered moving to Vegas now.
I can not imagine how Diana feels. I hope she get some relief :C

You got better because you didn't have any reason to be unwell there. You were doing something that you enjoyed and weren't subconsciously trying to get out of the responsibility of day to day life.
