Carolina Cross Giant Watermelon update 8 27 2014

This is about 4 weeks update on the Carolina Cross watermelon I am growing this year. This one is supposed to be giant but time will tell! I think it will be a nice melon even if it isn't a prize winner. It was fun to try for a giant one this year. I will probably try again next year.

I planted my first crop of Carolina Cross watermelons this year. Prepared my soil, proper watering and the temperature ideal, but still got blossom end rot or small melons. Had big expectation for these melons. My jubilee melons were alot bigger that the carolina.

I attempted that variety last year but the deer ate the plants. Nice to see someone actually succeed.

I hope so. It has been raining and I see the melon looks bloated like a fattened pig this morning. I think it could be slowing down too soon. I will update again. The weather is nasty today so it will be a little while. Next year I want to try again and a fix up my soil just right.

You should placed it on a platform/riser so it won't rot on the bottom. Also, its not necessary to weigh it until its harvested. That's when it counts.

This was my first giant watermelon and next time I will put something under it. I didn't weigh until harvest. I used a measurement weight chart to check growth every week.

Burpee company carries these. Also research for growers who know how to produce the good seeds. I don't share the F2 seeds because results might not be reliable.
