    Back in Roswell NM my dad taught us to harvest a watermelon and leave it in a cold water well for hours. OMG on a hot Roswell day, that ice-cold watermelon was the best I ever ate.

    Grew watermelons in South Texas for forty years, me personally l love the oversize fruit for the simple reason, the bigger the sweeter, but our buyers claim that 18 - 20 pounders are the consumers demand at the supermarket. Our farm average was around 200 acres per season plus another 100 of fall melons.(very difficult to grow on account of disease). Good luck with your oversize fruit they are very beautiful. Retired farmer from South Texas.

    I love the “real” watermelons. All I ever find are the little seedless that really are not that good. People that have never had a farm melon do not know what they are missing. We use to grow black diamonds. They were huge! The orange meated were the best. Seeded melons are so much better. Thank you.

      Seedless watermelons are delicious if home grown. Like anything else needing shipped they often get picked to early or when it’s wet causing low sugar content.

    You really did an awsome job with your vacation time, like the say "You reap what you sow" and you did an excellent job! Thanks for sharing and update us on your next harvest. The person who mentioned selling them for $5 each; where I live they sell for $7 and it's only 1/3 the size with seeds compared to yours. Awsome!

    Jubilee watermelons are a great watermelon. Sugar content ,color and texture, one big Jubilee will give you both seedless and seed fruit in the same melon is what I tell my customers. The big heart will be seedless and the rest of the fruit will have seed. The only problem with large Jubilees is most people can not handle such a large melon and do not have room for it in the fridge. But they are a really great melon. You did a great job growing you melons and it is great in seeing someone take pride in doing so.

    Those giants used to be the watermelon of choice 20 yrs. ago here where I live in the south. Now all you can find is the round small ones & maybe a mid sized one even at the farmer's market. Some of the new ones are pretty tasty if you catch them right,, but I do wish we still had the choice of getting a really large striper when you want it.
    Ha,, regardless,, it's on my shopping list to grab one next time I hit the store. I always cave to the power of suggestion & that 55 pounder did the trick!

    • @krane15
      @krane15 4 роки тому

      Actually, that only one of 3 methods to determine melon ripeness. The other two are:
      2) a pale yellow underbelly
      3) a hollow sound when thumped in the center (this one requires practice)
      Keep in mind that melons in the market don't come with tendrils.

      Try this one for number four. First set melon up and down just like it grew in the field place the middle digit of your middle finger over the blossom end now press in with the tip of your middle finger. This is how buyers for large grocers do it.

    Thanks for posting the video. You got me beat for sure. One thing missing from your vid is where your from. I grow melons in Michigan and the growing season is much shorter than say Georgia. Last year I planted around 15 plants first time, and was astounded at the growth of some of those plants. One particular plant had 13 melons, and like yours were at least 15 feet in circumference. Of all the garden my biggest melon was 38 pounds. This year I set a goal of 40lbs. I hit 41lbs this week with plenty more to ripen. I planted Allsweet (biggest) and a few Jubilees. Jubilees so far not as big as the Allsweets, but haven't matured fully yet.
    Anyway, the reason I'm writing is your comment saying "I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest of this melon". Dude here's what you do....juice some melons! Let me tell you watermelon juice is almost better, tastier, and easier than eating the melon. Not only that, watermelon juice is packed with vitamins and minerals too numerous to list here. I use a Breville Centrifugal juicer (recommended). From a 55 pound melon you will get at least 3 gallons of juice. After juicing I then put the juice in half gallon ball jars and freeze. I fill my freezer full of these Jars a drink watermelon juice year round. By the way I believe freezing actually makes the juice even more flavorful than freshly juiced. I have given up drinking pop completely for a full year. That can only be better for ones health for sure!
    Enjoy!

      Hi Don, nope. Deer don’t eat any parts of the plants. The only problem I get is they walk over the plastic mulch and punch holes through the plastic with their hooves and then weeds come up. It truly depends on the weather. I’d say yes you’d have to water. Where you are though you get a lot more summer t-storm action than where I live so you’d have to find the balance between watering yourself and from nature.

    I am so impressed! Even though I can see it’s obviously very large, it’s still heavy for its size which is another great indicator of an awesome melon.
