- I'm not very good at woodturning but i keep trying, so when i was asked to make a finial end knob i said yep, i don't often use the lathe so had a practice first making the knob, that turned out ok but as always i got a catch with a rounded edge skew that i'm determined to learn how to use, the second one turned out ok, treated with Sika clear preserver & got painted then fixed to the roof finial with a dowel and coated in PU glue & a screw, & 'while i was there' i replaced a broken roof tile & fixed a badly installed piece of gutter,

👍 All, my work comes through from recommendations, always has been for 20yrs, yeah it does feel good & although i always want to feel pride in my work, that's part of the reason i started working for myself so that i could stand back n say 'i built that' it, it also always inspires me to do it well because every job is my advertisement & my clients are friends, friends of friends etc. they're not just some random person who found me in a phone book, it's the reason i work alone, when people ring me they want me, not me & my apprentice practicing on their house. ok surely that 1st attempt is ok lol. its gonna be painted, hardly noticed too up there. looked great to me anyway. also im fascinated watching this. even the way you dab the pencil on and boom, a line all the way around. must be fun/frustrating doing it.
Yeah maybe a bit of filler n sandpaper, then give it a quick paint before handing over, 👍 but this was an exercise in lathe practicing, couldn't stop at that first attempt, thankfully the cock upon the second sanded out, 😅👍 Yeah really frustrating, so many yrs of practice n it still 'catches' me out 😕😊 Thanks 👍

I'm crap with a skew as well. Funny how we have the same vocabulary for a catch ;) As you don't have two ball ends side by side, I don't think it matters if it is a little different from the original. Odd job Gid, not just your common old fashioned joiner LOL
Yeah sometimes oops isn't enough, it really frustrates me, i've tried n tried, the suggestions in the comments here differ but over the time i've tried all, i think there's just some kind of knack that comes with time, i should have a go on it a bit more often than every 6mths, but who has the time to make sq bits of wood into smaller round bits of wood unless it's got a purpose 😉😁👍 n yeah 30ft up who's going to notice 👍

Thanks Brian, yeah that's partly why i don't book people, they just go on a list, eg. i've some wardrobes to make in a few wks, the client said in a msg - 'Given how in demand you are we might try and add in another wardrobe in another room if you’re up for it'. When people get me they find a list of jobs n i sometimes don't know when i'll be leaving 😮🙄 People do wait for me & it's nice to be wanted but....👍

Nice job Gid 👍. On your catches, avoid using the centre of the gouge on the wall of the cut. Turn your hand more toward the floor so when you enter the cut, the centre and back edge are automatically out the way. On the skew, raise the tool rest so you approach the cut from above and present the skew at a more acute angle.
But for a non wood turner you've done very well! Amazing how much mess a lathe makes, I've found chippings in my underpants before today 🤣🤣🤣 Happy Birthday 👍

Nice job mate, you would never know it was a repair goes together perfectly, have to say I don’t own a lathe so your lathe work looked great to me, only thing I’ve done similar is turned some tool handles on my pillar drill using spotted gum which is extremely hard but a beautiful wood 👌👌👌👍👍👍🇦🇺

Thankyou 👍😊 Yeah n no, depends on how you look at it, if i was better on the ;lathe i could've just knocked it out quicker, the house is local so fitting was 20-30mins inc getting tools out, i had the wood so it's just a couple of hrs labour the house deserves the knob to be there, I think if the turned knob had to be sourced, maybe go online or have to make phone calls to find someone with a lathe then it would've cost them a lot more n be more hassle, she dropped lucky finding me, esp here in Leeds, not a lot of joiners workshops anymore,

I love my lathe but never get the chance to use it. It’s always the same for me too but they expect it done for the same price as quoted, NO EXTRA JOB EXTRA MONEY.

Nice job I’m a wood turner of 5 years and I noticed a few basic beginner mistakes,
1. You must not be able to fit your index finger between the tool rest and the wood.
2. All screws to clamp the jaws onto the wood must be tightened by rotating the chuck to each one in turn meaning you’ve not only cantered the wood in the jaws evenly but also made sure its clamped evenly.
But other than that you’ve done great I’d suggest it should have been made from oak not pine as it’s not going to last as long.
Thankyou 😊👍 as it is now soaked it treatment & painted, it & the glue will out live the existing finial, so pointless using Oak unless the whole finial was to be replaced.

Ya gid ,after viewing your process I'd suggest lowering the tool rest a bit ,it appears that your riding the scew chisel on top of the piece at that angle it just wants to dig in and fly back,you should cut into the piece from the side holding firmly on the back of the chisel. That's where most of your control is instead of controlling with hand closest the piece.
