  • Afterthought put the little thing in at the end after the arms go in ;) This is a 25min uncut vid of me taking my new HiKOKI M3612DA 36V Brushless Cordless Router apart & extending the plunge depth to 65mm so a 12mm spiral cutter will fit which was too long & a few minutes at the end of trying it out on hardwood Ash
    I increased the depth by adding a longer stainless threaded bar.

    That happiness with a fresh cutter in the machine. So nice always.
    You definitely don't want to overheat these. We have had the same ones a few times. They work great, though they don't last forever. Once you get a bit too greedy and burn the bit, it's over immediately.

      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому +1

      Yep, new blade or cutter, crisp, clean easy cut & thanks that's good to know about them burning, I'll keep that in mind. I had one yrs ago but it went missing & pretty much every worktop I've fitted I buy a new standard straight cutter that may well just get binned at the end whether it's burnt or not.

      That was my final thought, lop a bit off with the grinder. £42.99 for just that one cutter so didn't really want to do that . PS. just had a look at the staircase vid where I compared cutters, it's not easy to see but the shank is the same length as the reg ½" cutter, so lopping a bit off would put part of the spiral cutter cutting blades in the collet, that's prob not a good thing,

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому +1

      Yep that's mainly why I bought it, I had the batteries & I don't think you could get a Makita in the UK then, looking online Makita ½", no doubt better quality but nearly twice the price of this, It's powerful enough, extending the plunge is def a bonus, a lot of routers only have 50mm plunge or at least they used to, I bought the Dewalt corded just to get the 65mm depth, adding the wood to the fence made it easier to keep it online at the start & end of cutting the boards, the plunge locking lever is crap tho, No regrets tho 👍

    • @ljones396
      @ljones396 3 місяці тому

      Yeah I've always had the timber on my router/trimmer Makita fence, that's a nice little router (18v 1/4"). I might just go for it with this one, I appreciate the trigger positioning could be really annoying, I noticed that when I had a look at one at the tool show. Niggles eh! I'm yet to try spiral bits too, look decent!

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah nice clean cut - Note this one it is described as "Cutting Length 4 Inch Super Extra Long", the shank is a reg size similar to the normal 50mm cutter but the cutting part is longer. I think I bought this with the Dewalt router in mind which I have & does have 65mm plunge, then bought the Metabo at about the same time without thinking too much about it. 🤦‍♂️😂 I'm not keen on the big clumsy Dewalt corded, I wanted cordless & prob got lost shopping online for a ½" cordless router 🤷‍♂️😂 If you've watched the staircase vid even tho I moved these nuts to their max the reg 50mm cutter only just fit so you might still want to do this extension thing anyway. • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому +1

      Yep that's what the other joiner said in the staircase build, the plate would've needed to be the thickness of the existing plate +12mm for the bit of cutter that stuck out, 15mm+, that would've pissed me off I think. the depth of cut would've stayed at 50mm or reduced by that plate thickness ( too early in the morning, brain isn't working yet) & the fence wouldn't work.

    I’ve done the same with my dewalt found it better to have the base sitting on the bench and putting the machine on to it I also replaced the the brass piece inside the thumb stop as it was wearing down, I used a bit of stainless steel rod for that much better as I cut it longer l for less travel on the thumb turn

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks, funny how you have to 'adjust these machines to suit 😕 I'll look into the thumb lever thing, that little thing is a cylinder shape with flat ends pressing against a round bar, I might consider putting a bit of a cup/curve on the end, or maybe a bit of rubber or felt (that'll fall off & jamb the plunge 😂), worse thing that'll happen is I have to replace it like you have,,.👍 Having it longer sounds interesting, that'll reposition the lever as at the mo with it have a hexagon mount you're limited to the lever's position 👍

      double safety feature - don't know, I'll look into it 👍, I've only a couple of small Dewalt batteries I think, I'm not keen on the 240v Dewalt I bought, it's a bit big n clumsy & feels a little bit cheaply made but Makita have brought out a cordless ½" & I've plenty of batteries for that, "Plunge depth: 60mm" tho, no idea if that can be extended & £500+ is too much for me at the mo esp as I have 5 routers & this one does the job 👍 But I do like my tools & I do like Makita so we'll see if I've money to burn one day 😂, Ali Express has one for £290 which is suspiciously cheap www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006974458486.html?src=google&src=google&albch=shopping&acnt=708-803-3821&slnk&plac&mtctp&albbt=Google_7_shopping&albagn=888888&isSmbAutoCall=false&needSmbHouyi=false&albcp=17858129175&albag&trgt&crea=en1005006974458486&netw=x&device=c&albpg&albpd=en1005006974458486&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwr7ayBhAPEiwA6EIGxG8kG5Wbu747gIuBri-8AZB1WB4E2mr6X9XYn1Ke6oMqmnqLJFyENRoC-UoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&aff_fcid=73285c654280472c8ddb3bd97c638433-1716371022384-02974-UneMJZVf&aff_fsk=UneMJZVf&aff_platform=aaf&sk=UneMJZVf&aff_trace_key=73285c654280472c8ddb3bd97c638433-1716371022384-02974-UneMJZVf&terminal_id=019a94574eb34435bb680130b384f5e4&afSmartRedirect=y

    Could you not have cut 10mm off the back end of the cutter? Dont know how easy that would be, maybe get some thieving scrote to cut it for you hardened steel bike locks don't seem to be a problem! 😅 Seems a lot of faff for a new machine considering most worktop cutters are 65mm youd think they would have thought it abit more 😢

    • @Gidjoiner
      @Gidjoiner  3 місяці тому

      That was a consideration lop a bit off with the grinder but was my last resort, . £42.99 for just that one cutter so didn't really want to do that . I saw when editing the staircase vid where I compared cutters, it's not easy to see but the shank is the same length as the reg ½" 50mm cutter, so lopping a bit off would put part of the spiral cutter cutting blades in the collet, that's prob not a good thing, At least this way I now have 65mm plunge & it only took ½hr to do this, even shorter if I was to discount the little locking thing that held me up, anyone watching this now won't have to go through that palava or would know what the problem is if it doesn't go back in easy like I found. . PS, you edited while I was writing, yep you can get 65mm straight fluted worktop cutters & this one is longer but most reg worktop cutters are still 50mm. If you watch the staircase vid even tho I moved these nuts to their max the reg 50mm only just fit so yes 'they should have thought about it a bit more'. 👍
