I'm voting for this as your BEST VIDEO to date. Since you guys use to teach sailing you are a natural at clear and concise explanations and you must always use the white board, a picture is really worth a thousand words. More, more, more videos about the technical aspect of sailing and navagating. Thanks again for a great video😎! Fishing videos are great too!
I follow quite a few sailing channels and have been slow to take up on yours. Now that I have I must say its one of the better ones. Very informative and accessible for the layman. And refreshingly without the emphasis on the bikini and cocktail shenanigans that a lot of the other channels seem to mostly consist of.
This was really good information for people like myself who are in the early planning stages and basically acting as a sponge in every second of downtime I can muster (which isn’t much, but I make use of what I have). I’m reading, researching, watching and preparing everything I can get my hands on over the next couple years so when the time comes to set sail (and I essentially still know nothing), I’m not seeing/hearing things for the first time. I feel like the best learning comes as you’re doing it, but I don’t want to venture in completely blind and unprepared so videos like this are extremely helpful. Thank you!
nice video! Maybe you could also do one showing how you handle the waves when they are big. how to decide where you want them beating the boat, from Aft, etc when things go nasty... cheers eh!
A good explanation for many boaters that have not had to deal with tide, current, swells & waves! Susan and I have just returned from 6 weeks cruising down from Tarpon Springs Fl to Freeport, Bahamas and then gunkholing to Marsh Town. Sorry we missed you when you were home. We had just completed the Great Loop. Keep on living the dream! John & Susan
The greatest lesson watching your adventures is that it’s a beautiful planet and people are naturally good. Thanks for taking my family for a very, very pleasant ride.
Forgot to mention that we just got home yesterday from 10 days of sailing a 40’ cat in the BVI’s where we encountered 6’ waves with super short 2 second periods in the Sir Frances Drake Channel. 30 knot winds coming straight at us... talk about uncomfortable. Our cat was a bucking hobby horse! Your lesson on comfy sailing hit home!
hello Nahoa Dudes, All those wave explanations reminded me of all the Aero-tests I used to have to run on my Flight Simulator at work, really cool stuff. I hope you figured out the best route, standing waves in the Ocean makes for big sloppy seas. The opening glass smooth water reminded me of the first time I ever went Deep Sea Fishing, not good for fishing. Stay safe, with tons of fun, I Love Y'all
I've watched a few of your videos and have been watching MANY other cat sailing videos and following them but I do REALLY think yall are awesome for the content you give and the great explanations handed out! The whiteboard was awesome and very informative! Thanks for all the great content and also yall are very positive up beat peeps that are fun to watch! Great job yall! - future Cat sailor if I can someday convince my wife to make the plunge! ;)
Love the videography! Will add that we too love Predictwind...it’s been a real game changer for us! We are preparing for a departure from Tanzania down to South Africa...currents, crazy wind systems. I wouldn’t even attempt it this time of year if we didn’t have Predictwind and the Iridium GO to be so sure of what’s happening as we progress down the coast!!!
I just binged watch all 62 videos in the last week and some while at work. You guys are amazing! First I love your relationship. Maybe after sailing you can be relationship counselors. Next although not as nearly as exciting as your adventure my wife and I bought a small houseboat and soon to be launched. I had a lot of work in dry dock. Ben your an inspiration to learn and do the work myself. I have learned a lot about DC/AC electric. Ashey never give up that bubbly and cute personality, Ben you have a wonderful partner. I have come to admire and love you both, you are living my dream. Best of luck to you both. Oh and I plan on buying a couple of shirts. Keep living the dream! Terry and Sondra Christofferson.
Thank you so much for this, simplified something I always thought was much more complex and makes me feel a lot safer fishing out of hawaii where we always have large waves.
My scotch line isnt quite as straight as your rum line. Comfortable boat and a great companion always equals a great passage. Luckily you guys already have both! Keep em coming!
Hit a complete tree just off the south shoreline of Saltspring Island. Nothing since then, Currently in New Zealand, more precisely, “ Great Mercury Island “ Cheers
Man, recently you guys have really stepped it up a notch...last few months of vids have been taken to the next level...nice work! Love what you are doing, hoping to see you out there some day, fellow Canuck! Check you website comments...
Its soo scary during bad weather..i live close to ocean in phil thats why i know how it feels....its nice to have a plan b in terms of unexpected bad weather...knows the closes small island near you..
Ashley if you carry on doing these lessons I am not going to buy books anymore. Well I havent got my boat yet but use Windy and Predictwind and they are good. Windy is good but they depend alot from donations but cool chaps there. I used both in Bermudas when doing my course at RYA and helped me great there. Keep on and Prost from Vienna
Im not a sailor. But my grandfather used to tell me about sailing. He sailed on the old sailing ships as a boy around the world.yes im oldish. He also told me waves sink ships not wind.According to him.you should have headed to below were you have marked current.and then turned back in to the waves.going the shortest puts you side one to the waves.Even if it is for a shorter time can be dangerous.Because of a freak wave.
Thanks great information particularly for a newbie as myself whilst i'm commenting i must say my partner and myself do enjoy your very informative video's Cheers Tim
Sometimes those tree trunks are aliive, off Bequia, I dodged a log that flopped a dorsal about 4 ft long. It was a black or a blue Marlin bout 10 ft long. It was "sunning" up on top.
Ben, I will have to get the name of the guy who did your tattoo. And then plan a trip to get one done! Thanks for the hard work putting all this together for us Ashley... next up: reading Wind Maps & wind roses?
Hello from Ontario, Canada. We are really ready for spring, and envy you guys. Question: what editing program do you use? The editing is great. I recall you guys were/are computer types, but still do a great job. I am watching your 'story' bit by bit and am still back a few months. I jumped ahead of the line to see if I could get a response comment from you. Keep up the good work, and be safe.
A friend hit a container. 500 nm SSW of Kona. At night. In a blow. They managed to not sink before the Coasties got to them. Logs are likely even worse. Stay safe!
Are your passages ever long enough to do a great circle track? Looks like ride the current when its following and if on the beam as short and sharp as possible.

The quality of your videos are so good. One of the better sailing channels.
Twice the meter height for comfy? So 6ft at 4 seconds is comfy? What size is your boat? In the pnw we avoid squared (wave = period)or below.

Thank you!!! Whenever I go surf or jetty fishing I never truly know how the water will be. This helps so much!
The white board was amazing! Thank you, from all us visual learners!
Makes my day when you guys upload a new video. Keep on living the dream!

I don’t know how I found this channel, but I’m sticking with it!

Love your videos! So curious, what is the name of the book you show with all the currents pictured? Do you recommend it? Thanks!!!
Logs and currents should remind you of home. Nothing like Seymour Narrows on a spring tide!
always learn something,enjoy,be safe ~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m not sure what it is but your videos fly by
I can only imagine that"Waaaaaa" waves are bad. Awesome++ for the white board!
Ben, I will have to get the name of the guy who did your tattoo. And then plan a trip to get one done!

Many thanks for great video! I have 8.1 meter long motor boat. What is safe height of waves and wind speed for sailing safe and comfortable?
You two should have 200.000 subscribers! Are they blocking you? They have Algorithms that won't suggest your post! Did you ever say Darn of Shucks?
Love you guys ❤️❤️
Love you guys videos
your videos are AWESOME !!

Awesome video guys! Us Canucks deal in meters man! LOL!
Great lesson...thank you
STUMP SAILING IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC! EPIC
Are your passages ever long enough to do a great circle track?
Looks like ride the current when its following and if on the beam as short and sharp as possible.
1 m x 2 = 2 second .
3 ft x 2 = 6 second .
American passages are more comfy lol
Can you show how you integrate your iridium go and your PredictWind. Love you guys great job.
In no expert but check out satellitephonestore.com .help video section. Xgate email with PredictWind offshore or phone Barry there.
Damn! That's some handy info right there. Keep em comin!
Those logs probably came down from
The mighty Sepik River. If you had time it would be a cool place to visit.
Nice lesson now I know, but honestly the title had me wondering if I really wanted to watch
Whats the name of that book with the current guides? Thank you so much for making this video by the way!
