@@FloridaEbikes Thats exactly why I do it, plus I get to scavenge around for used parts. Don't forget those used frames for the cheap too, I've built up a couple of those in the past and saved quite a bit of money with those builds.
I like how you remained anonymous with brand names for hubs and other components... aside from talking about problem solvers and driver bodies. Thanks for showing National Trail too!
I think the last bike I bought from a shop fully built was 1998 ? I always buy a fram and custom build including paint. Ground up make it mine 1 of 1 on the planet! Great video I'm sure will help tons of people out there . 🍻
I built up a DMR Trailstar from a second hand frame about 15 years ago. I really enjoyed it, and it taught me heaps about bike components. Lots more to think about these days with all the "standards" but I'd do it again for sure.
Well that sure wouldn't be a budget build! haha. Nice video man, do go along with the nice collared shirt. I'd love to build a bike from the frame up. I'll come to you first to make sure I get all the compatible parts!!
Florida Budget Bike Builds that would be the idea for sure. It would be interesting to price it out and see how close they would compare factory vs. home built and sourced. I ain’t got the time for that, so I’ll never know. 😂🤣
RC's Outdoor Gold that’s a good name. Hopefully not too value, or you end up buying more than once (like you talked about). As o get older and wiser learning that buying right the first time is worth the dough. Yeah, you’re going to have to screen for the collar! 😬
Second! I love the idea of building my bike frame up. I definitely have preferred components and set up. Getting a whole bike gives me a lot of components I am not thrilled with 👍👍
That's a big reason for me too, getting what I want on a bike and planning components for a relatively long term! Thanks Ken, hope that arm is coming together.
@@OutdoorGold fricken collarbone feels perfectly normal now. Doc still doesn't want me going HAM until mid June. He gives me some BS about me being a normal human 🤷♂️
8:14 I am sticking with Shimano HG, cus I can file it down and not get stuck cassette, but the XD driver & cassette can get stuck to each other, and need wise and hammer or breaker bar to remove it. I got a 11-50T but waiting on Box One X-Wide RD, and Archer D1Xtrail shifter. I think this setup is going to be sweet.
so far it looks like Nicolai is one of the simplest bikes to work on, at least when it comes to linkage service, cable routing, all external, no need for zipties. I haven't seen any cable routing that is up to my standards apart from Nicolai.
I found a 2013 giant trance x3 full suspension frame in perfect condition and I have it built to completion I'm just waiting for my new magnesium mag rims and new custom rear cassette.
I feel anything with travel ranging from 130-150 is a huge plus out here if you like riding at the lunch loops and Powderhorn. I do like Yeti's alot in this terrain for the plus end peddling efficiency. But, Pivots, Rocky's, Ibis etc. with that respective travel does really well out here. I tend to add 20mm to the fork based off the rear travel. Both my SB6 and Insurgent are running 170mm fork/150mm rear.
Is there a 12-step program for recovering Bike Geeks? Going Dead Sailor on a bike-build budget is almost a given. The costs of purchasing components, alone, can snowball out of control in a big, fast hurry. The possibilities for ending up with an expensive, clumsy, outdated Franken-Bike are almost endless. So, why is it always so damned tempting? Hmmmmm? Why, why, why, why....(cue the sound of a human head banging against a wall, over and over, and over again). Damn you, RC! Great Video. You know you're an Enabler, right? And a rabble rouser! Peace. The Adventure Continues...
It would be great if there were a "parts-picker" to ensure compatibility (similar to pcpartpicker.com for building computers). Some online bike retailers have rolled their own "builder" interface which can be a big help in eliminating mistakes. That said, local shops typically have this experience, and the likely somewhat higher price can be viewed as a "consulting fee" to ensure not only compatibility but suitability -- e.g., do you need that Race Face Atlas crank or will the lighter Turbine do the job?
Interesting point. Heck that would be good to have for buying and building a wheel! Yep exactly and there are a lot of perks of building and buying from the bike shop, sometimes they’ll cut you a deal on labor depending on the shop.
one problem, the awesome deals are around when I can't afford them. I am thinking about a differen't frame I hate my low stack height. I have awesome parts I want. any who good job man always enjoy the show.
I'm debating getting a frame and slowly building a bike piece by piece. It just seems like you get good components highly discounted when buying a let's say 4,000 and up bike. Thoughts??
Its what I do! I get exactly what I want, my only recommendation is if you are building a bike don't short sell yourself on any components, stick with quality.
Would you consider building a bike from the frame up? Be sure to check the description for some stuff that was missed or lost in context in the video.

Tip don't go for Sram if you want to use Oval chainring on a high pivot bike, cus the chainring has to be rotated. for example Kavenz (77designz)
For the amount of changes I make to the bike, it might not be a bad idea.
I think a bike build is your destiny!
@@FloridaEbikes on my last bike the only original part when I replaced it was the cranks, rotors and the frame.

I’m back now can you put 2.8 tires on a 30mm rim
You could put it on, but I think, emphasis on the think part, you'd get better performance from a 35mm rim for 2.8
