Hello from Alaska! Thanks for a great video, this will help me protect my knives and we have so many birches here and other great trees that fall down in storms etc. Thanks.
Ah nice, Birch is amazing for this project so best of luck in having a go! ~Peace~
Thanks Paul and Zed! I always thought making sheaths like this would be dead fiddly but thanks to you i've just made 2 nice ones for hook knives from cardboard and leather in about 10 minutes.
Nice going Simon! i've seen some folk make some real funky sheaths using just that ~Peace~
Thanks both - very timely that I just stumbled on this. Felled a small cherry yesterday to try carving some spatulas and spoons from. Noticed how easily the bark peeled off and how durable it felt. Having watched this I just nipped up the garden in the dark and stripped a bit of bark off a small cherry log and ten minutes later my little mora has a pretty little rustic sheath. Might just need to let it dry a bit before I leave my knife in it! Thank you for a cracking quick and easy project. I might have to think about getting a book or two and trying something harder :-)
Thats awesome to hear Ian, Cherry bark makes great sheaths and indeed there are some great books out there which go deeper into the project. Look up the one made by 'North House Folk School' in the US which is a fantastic book about Birch bark and its uses ~Peace~
Great video, glad to see you back Zed. I wanted to mention that there is a great deal of birch bark available in my neck of the woods(Canada) along the hydro lines. They cut down Birch trees after ice storms. With in a km walk, there might be 20-30 trees down. They are just going to rot. So it is a great way to get the bark, without any trouble.
Most definitely Canada and northern US is a prime area for collecting good quality bark hence theres such a rich history there of it being used for hundreds of years ~Peace~
So inspirational guys !!!!!! Thank you so much both ! I was looking for a good natural sheath for my knives to do easily and quickly and you did my day chaps !
Thats awesome to hear Michael and best of luck with making one! ~Peace~
This video was perfect timing. I just made my first sheath! Thank you so much.
Nice going dude! ~Peace~
Hi Zed, thanks again for the hint, now it should work the right way, again I'm impressed about your work and birch bark is also one of my favorite materials, I the are where I life we have birch trees to, no a lot and I wish we had more, at my property on about 1100 Meter I've one huge birch but higher up there grow no birches anymore, wish you a great weekend my friend, Taro
It is always educational learning about species others have in their countries, as always I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching Taro ~Peace~
Another great How To vid, Zed. Once again captured all the info as clear as day. I would like to see the vid on harvesting the bark, as I have not been able to get sheets off like that from birch I took from a pile of newly felled trees I found. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely have a planned in the future on harvesting the bark as it's something I want to learn how to do too ~Peace~
Look forward to It, Zed.
Wow that was relaxing. I think I'll actually try that out when I'm done with this cereal box.
Cereal comes first ...then the sheath #priorities ~Peace~
Great video - thanks! Took me a few goes to get on that wasn’t too loose, but it works a treat.
Also, I tried it with leaves from my yucca plant…. Worked really well!
Hi Frank, chuffed to hear you got this to work for you and appreciate the heads up on using Yucca plant! ~Peace~
Liked this idea since I saw the first SpoonFest vid. Thanks for the tutorial guys!
We can join the cool club now with fancy knife sheaths at this years Spoonfest ;) ~Peace~
Great video again, Zed.
The used for the birch are extremely varied and it may well be the most useful UK tree?
Indeed the numerous uses of the Birch tree are amazing, such a versatile species and lots to learn still. Btw dude i'm away in Dorset next week so lets catch up via phone the week after if you're around ~Peace~
great video zed and Paul. next up a multi carry sheath with fire steel and dc4 holder 😀
Now we're talking ha! ~Peace~
Brilliantly clear explanation , thanks you two ! ( I just shared this vid to my friend Hayley who did a spoon carving course with Paul last summer - she's in hospital after an op at the mo and dreaming about getting back outdoors . This will give her something to look forward to )
And yeah , the accent thing , lol . I'm a northerner living in London the past 20 odd years , so my accent is well wonky now , but I'll still argue till the cows come home that there's only one "r" in craft ... it's not "crarft" ... ha haaa
Am sorry to hear about your friend Hayley and please do pass on my regards to her and hoping she makes a full recovery. As a londoner everything north of Watford is considered oop north! ;)) ~Peace~
Sorry to hear about Hayley, hope she gets well soon. Hopefully this bark sheath is a nice easy project for her to try while on the mend. Cheers, Paul.
Zed/Paul absolutely cracking stuff here people, a great inspirational tutorial guys. Big respect and thanks to the both of you, Shine On ✨ 🌳.
You the man bro thank you ~Peace~
Awesome tutorial! I really didn't realise it was so simple. I love that kind of ingenuity.
Very cool once you see it being demoed once and gets addictive to make ~Peace~
Thanks for the video. I successfully learned how to make my own bark sheaths. I practiced with a cereal box!
Oh wow nice! lots of satisfaction I hope in making them and appreciate your kind words ~Peace~
Dam recycling went out yesterday. ;-) what a lovely chap.
Thanks Simon.
Paul is a fine gentleman indeed and very talented, let us know how you get on with making one Sime ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors Thanks Zud ;-)
Thank you for the video, very nice process, I think I will give it a try, I have a lot of white/paper birch on my property, some standing dead, so that may be where I start. Got to fell them first. Great job guys, look forward to more videos.
Do let us know how you get on Daphne, i'm hoping to harvest some birch too this weekend ~Peace~
Great video Zed, great to see you out with Paul. Sound chap. Atb Joe.
Your name came up during the weekend ...obviously both of us slagging you off but still (Kidding!!!)~Peace~
The only bad publicity is no publicity. Lol. How could anyone have a bad word to say about a buddy nice bloke like me! (Well you obviously) 🤓 joking. Love @ peace bro....
Brilliant Paul and Zed.
As always Lewis you are very kind thank you ~Peace~
Thanks so much. Just watched whilst making one for my mora knife out of a rice bubbles box😊 Fits snugly and is not bulky. Will try with Silver Birch bark next from pruned limbs i was given.
Thats awesome to hear and indeed there are many materials to use in this kind of project such as Cherry bark, etc ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors cheers.
Have made 4 birch bark sheaths now including one for a slightly bent double edged knife used for spoon carving. They all fit so well - thank you both for this video.
Brilliant video to both of you. Very informative. Thank you 🤘🏼
Thank you kindly James ~Peace~
Great video, Zed, admire the work you put in.
I appreciate your kind words Matt thank you ~Peace~
Brilliant, I wonder if it'll work on Eucalyptus bark that falls off our trees in Australia
Definitely worth a try as i've seen folk using a great variety of bark for making sheaths with ~Peace~
Great stuff guys! Thank you for sharing these great how to videos!
You are very kind Michael thank you ~Peace~
Thanks for another great video! At 14:30 Paul mentions splitting down the bark to make it thinner. Is there any particular technique to do this?
Hi John yes you use the knife edge to make the initial split and then gently pry apart with the fingers ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors brill, cheers Zed!
Brilliant video brother! Thanks for sharing, I am in great need of that skill!
You the man Steve thank you ~Peace~
Just what I needed for my newly handled Sloyd knife. Thanks!
Best of luck in making one for your new knife my friend ~Peace~
Great video Zed , I'm really inspired, I have enjoyed working with bark , for a long time now and still never thought of this , I would love to see more of these videos in the future :)
Hopefully have some more bark related videos planned for the future as theres so many cool and practical uses for it, appreciate your kind words my man ~Peace~
Great video fellas, I recently stripped some cherry bark that might just do the trick so will be having a go at this. Paul you come across really well on camera mate, love the posh translation at the end Zed really had me laughing! Hope to see you both again soon.
Your name came up plenty of times over that weekend and in a good way too! Appreciate you watching dude and trying out different barks is something i'm dead keen on now ~Peace~
it would be nice, if you include the books in the description, love how you show so many talented craftsman, carry on
Appreciate you watching and for your kind words Christian ~Peace~
Awesome video zed, I'll have to try this if I ever get a chance to on a trip!
If you're still based in Canada then you'll have access to the some of the finest birch bark available compared to what you get in the UK ~Peace~
Loving this guy Zed , especially as he is a fellow derbyshirian ! Great exposure ....peace
'Derbyshirian' ...gonna call him that next time I meet him as it sounds dead posh ;) Paul is genuinely a super nice and friendly guy with oodles of knowledge, hope to show more of him on my channel ~Peace~

And extremely humble too, appreciate you watching and for your kind words Lee thank you ~Peace~
Absolutely incredible!
Thank you kindly! ~Peace~
great information 👍 I can see how lots of other barks could do this too.
Most definitely and using loads of other barks is something im aiming to try too ~Peace~
fantastic! thanks guys, can't wait to try this.
Thank you kindly Alex and do let us know how you get on ~Peace~
This was a really cool video and your channel seems very interesting i think i will subscribe 👍

You are very kind Ray thank you ~Peace~
Awesome video guys! Ive got some new ideas now, thanks allot. Im going to my local forester to find some. I cut down a dead cherry last year, a shame i threw away all the bark :(

Another great post. Thanks bud.
Thank you kindly Matt ~Peace~
I have that same hat! Great video as always Zed!
Thank you kindly my friend ~Peace~
Another good un Zed , very professional and very entertaining, your usual high standard.
I wonder if you (once finished) could varnish these in any way to give them a little more longevity and aesthetics. Regards and stay safe mate.
P.S Derbyshire is the Midlands Not the north.
I just wipe a bit of linseed oil on them. It does brighten them up nicely.
As a Londoner anything north of Watford is considered oop north but point taken! :) Think Paul just answered your question reg applying oil to the sheath ~Peace~
EH UP zed, Ay!, I bet the norff don't show up on your sat nav, we are bit too provincial outside of Laaandon.
Yes mate "Paul" did answer my Question. stay safe chap , Regards from us trolls.
Love it! Great teachin skills too.
Most definitely and thank you ~Peace~
How long should this bark dry before you put your knife into it? I would worry about rusting the blades if the bark wasn't dry.
Hi Lisa, if the bark has been freshly harvested then I would wait a couple of weeks for it to dry, otherwise you're ok to put your knife in straight away. Either way consider using 'Camelia' oil on your blade to prevent it rusting when not in use ~Peace~
Excellent video Zed! Cheers, Marc
Thank you kindly Marcy Marc ~Peace~
Beautiful work
Thank you kindly ~Peace~
superb video. really helpful. thanks
Thank you kindly David ~Peace~
great craftmanship wel done
Paul is a very humble yet talented craftsman ~Peace~
Awesome video Zed
Thank you kindly Alan ~Peace~
Do you have a place where I can fine that template you show. The one for the the little box made from cardboard.
Thanks a lot for a great video.
You can contact Paul on his website, there is a link to it in the description just below the video ~Peace~
I love these! I make one for each Puukko I sell!
Very cool! ~Peace~
Awesome idea and a great video! i really enjoyed!
Thank you kindly my friend ~Peace~
I have one of those short sheaths made by a uncle that is easily 80 years old and perfectly preserved and useable
Oh wow that is amazing to hear Gerals! something sentimental that will hopefully last a lot longer ~Peace~
Hi Zed, What's the name of the guy that made the sheaths in the rain that Paul mentions at about 6minutes into the video? Couldn't make it out 'cos o t' southern accent. I was born n'& bred in Lancashire but now live in Cambridgeshire. Local chippys don't do gravy, there's no hills. It's a struggle!
Hi Simon apologise as rushed for time so cant check the video to hear what he said, Pauls an incredibly generous guy so if you ping him via social media he'll definitely tell you. Sorry dude and apologise for the lack of hills down south! ;) ~Peace~
I'm sure you got the email but just in case and for others too, it was hobbexp on youtube. He is a legend. Just wiping the gravy from my beard and looking out at the hills... sorry ;)
Yep ol Fredde.
Fantastic video. ..
Thank you kindly Elvin ~Peace~
Thumbs Up Zed & Paul (Y) !
As always Madame Penelope you are very kind, thank you :) ~Peace~
Oregon Mike H here Zed, A Big Thank You & 1 to Paul I'll express on his IG. Now Zed really, Co Co Puffs, Co Co Puffs Really?.. Please Zed, You know all us Bushcraft Macho types eat Wheaties, "The Breakfast of Champions," now don't you!! HA, ha ha, it is to laugh. As you always make me do Z-Man, on every Vid. So good to see you in the woodland again! You know I've been waiting, I know you do. Look at me mate all wet from the weather just having been waiting out in my weathered outdoors for you to pop up on my phone. So thank you for finely arriving Man! I'm going Home now to stick my cloths in the dryer and shred up my: .... WHEATIES BOX!! lol Mate.
Mike as always you are extremely kind and I sincerely appreciate your kind words thank you ~Peace~
Thanks for sharing the knowledge, a really good tutorial :)
Sincerely appreciate you watching and for your kind words my man ~Peace~
Great video. Tks for sharing. 👍
Thank you kindly Carlos ~Peace~
i wonder if using rawhide strips instead of birch bark strips would be any better. soaked in water the rawhide becomes soft and workable. cut into strips and using the same technique as paul did, weave it around the birch bark liner. after a few days rawhide will stiffen and never come undone. just sayin. great vid
I've not personally tried it but who's to say it won't work, if you do have a bash at it lemme know my man ~Peace~
oh! i have to try that! :) cool video man !
Gets addictive when you've made your first one, best of luck my man ~Peace~
Thank You for this awesome video i like IT alot 👍

Anyone have the link or the name of the maker of the knife and sheath making video mentioned near the beginning? I think it was hobby-something
Alas I forgot the name but I have linked to Pauls Instagram, worth asking him on there ~Peace~

Very nice. At 22.40 you mention a name of someone but I did not catch the name so I couldn't look up that person. Not for this tutorial, yours is fine, but I'd like to check what other tutorials he has made
Hi Katrien thank you for your kind words and the name Paul mentioned is 'Del Stubbs' from the US ~Peace~
Paul's instagram is actually instagram.com/paul_woodlandcraft/, for anyone trying to find it. Not sure if it was the other one originally but this is the current one.
Appreciate the heads up Troy as his Instagram has changed since I filmed this last ~Peace~

Thank you kindly Loris ~Peace~
Very nice, Thanks

For those people who think that the bark is to thin to work, the natives of Canada would split the bark in 2 so they would be able to use the bark for crafts and other things of the sort.
Indeed, bark is an incredible material to work with ~Peace~
Really fascinating Mr S. Really enjoyed that. Thx for sharing, much appreciated. Take care. :o)
As always Senor Everitt you are too kind my friend ~Peace~
Come on Zed Derbyshire is in the Midlands. Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland, Cumbria, Lancashire & North Yorkshire now that is the North!!
Being a southerner anything north of Watford is considered 'oop north' ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors, Hahaha I'm fom Northumberland and even Yorkshire is south for us. Keep the faith brother.
@@davehogg63 I'm in Derbyshire and feel we have more in common with the North than we do the South! Also 'Midands' sounds like a bit nowhere town!
Great video:)
Thank you kindly Sebastian ~Peace~
I made my gouge cover out of thin leather and duct tape. 😁 works great too

It's the way to go! ~Peace~
Maybe try to supplement your "Gotcha"s with some "I see"s or some "Hm, interesting"s. Lol.
This is brilliant. I can't wait to try.
Yes a very cool way of making a sheath, best of luck dude ~Peace~
