How To: Crochet looks like knitting with half double crochet in rows / Camel Stitch

  • In this Crochet Extras tutorial I show you how to create the effect of knitting with crochet, that isn't the Tunisian method. Instead I show you how to utilise the half double crochet stitch to create a knitted pattern, just like in knitting, working either in the round or in rows. This stitch is also known as the Camel Stitch. It can be worked in single crochet but it's harder to see/do.

    Make each stitch in the back loop on each row makes a rib on front AND back. Cheers!

    "Do Be Do" Adorable :) @ 4:03 to 4:04 she points out the back stitch behind 2nd V and says "Do Be Do" It's funny the things we people do inadvertently.

    You are an amazing teacher! I've been crocheting for years but have learned more from you than anyone else. Also I was at a craft store and bumped into a lady asking questions about crocheting. She is new to the hobby so I talked to her for a bit and mentioned you. She lit up and said yes I watch her videos! So you are bringing people together as well!

    How do you start the pattern? Do you start it out in the back loop?

    I was struggling to find the knitted effect on the front side always, and was not successful with using crocheting hdc in the back loop...Thanks so much for sharing the nice trick and a neat way of remembering - front front loop and back back loop. Lovely. Bless you.

      she did tell you - you chain however many chains you want your piece to be and then do a row of HDC (half double crochets) and then at end of that row and rest of rows - chain one, turn - start as you would with another HDC only go into the 3rd loop as she shows in video. I hope this helps you :)

    OMG!!! I have been crocheting for 10 years and I have never seen this stitch. I LOVE it!!! worsted weight yarn with a 5.75 mm hook and it has the most beautiful drape. I'm using it to make a masculine blanket for my father-in-laws fishing camp. I love the idea for a sweater in the comments.

    i loved your video. very helpful. have you ever done the half -double crochet slip stitch followed by a row of double crochet(U.S.)? I am trying to follow a hat pattern using this to make the ribbing but it's leaving big gaps at the edges.do you have any idea how i can fix this? any of my usual methods of fixing the usual dc "gap" or hole at beg. don't seem to work very well with the hdc sl st.

      Use "turn -- stsc 2, cont. in dc to end" rather than "turn, ch-3, dc in 4th ch from hook, continue in dc to end", and count the stacked stitch like you would with the turning chain on the usual pattern. IF you're going for things like cables and ribs with fpdc/bpdc or efpdc every other one, then you might want to think about using linked stitches after the turn, although you'll get a denser feel than with stacked, but the counting is easier---unless you choose to use stacked, and inset your ribs or cables a few stitches into the work.

    G'Day HBC, What a great way to do bands on crocheted jumpers e.t.c. It would make a stronger band than using the single crochet stitch. Normally I do Needlework and Beading but this has inspired me to try during the evening time. I have watched a few of your videos and liked them very much and will watch again. I can see it as part of a cable design jumper. I am going to see if I can crochet one. Thanks for the video. Chris from OZ. (Australia).

    Because the directions didn’t start off with the 1st row I had a hard time figure out what stitch to do. Then I listened to her when she said wrong side of material front stitch which would make right side back stitch. Finally figured it out

    This has me laughing a little. I was making a change purse in the round with the hdc stitch last week, and kept finding myself turning it too far to the side and stitching the wrong "v," as it were, and pulled out a lot of stitching as I messed up my little change purse. And what I was doing was this stitch. Wish I had the luxury of keeping the knit-look but that wasn't the pattern. Good to know for future reference, though!

    • @KovenDesigns
      @KovenDesigns 9 років тому

      Chris Phillips I think you can chain and half dc how ever many stitches you wish and then just work the stitch after the half dc row. So you work the back loop then front loop and continue.

    • @HappyBerryCrochet
      @HappyBerryCrochet  9 років тому +1

      Chris Phillips I started with a simple row of chains, and then worked 1hdc in each ch along as normal, and then you need to work in the 'front front loop' on the first row across. Hope that helps!
