You're AMAZING!! There is no way I could have ever figured it out. It has been years that certain stopped working and I just maneuvered around them. I was finally going to get an electrician out(by the way would have cost a fortune) but decided to try UA-cam one more time. Well I looked at a few videos and they didn't help. Came to your video and followed your instructions and guess what? I found the trip outlet and pushed the button in entirely different room and it solved my problem. Thank You sooo much for sharing such great information to save other money they don't have to spend especially during these tough times

Thank You So Much!!! I found my GFI with the reset/test button in my garage hidden behind the utility shelves. Easy, easy fix. Decided before going to the hardware store to watch a couple videos, and yours saved me $$$. Thank you again my friend for taking the time to generate this awesome DIY video.

Hi Johnny. I just came across your GFCI video [ life saver ] as I was experiencing a huge problem with many GFIC outlets not working throughout my house. Low and behold, I looked around my house and found 4 outlets that have the test button. Using my GFCI Tester I found two that had been tripped. Thank you Johnny, the power to those problematic outlets have been resolved.

    Yep this helped me!
Just bought my first house and still learning to do things on my own. There is only one outlet in my garage and it did not work, looking around the house I didn’t find a tripped gfci, the 2nd bathroom above the garage also didn’t have power to the outlet, which led me to my mast bathroom on the other side of the house where I noticed a tripped switch. Reset it and we’re back in buisness. Would have never thought to look on the complete opposite end of the house lol

I didn't realize a GFCI receptacle would possibly be connected that far away. Seems very unintuitive to me as a layman but because of this video I looked for GFCI receptacles super far away from my microwave/oven that weren't working. I found one in the garage like 1,000 feet away to reset and now they are. Thank you!

Here are places where you will find GFCIs: bathrooms (late 70s-early 80s homes were built with them), kitchens (late 80s & early 90s required them in addition to baths), outdoor outlets (late 80s & early 90s in addition to bath & kitchen) laundry rooms and garages (90s and current in addition to bath & kitchen). All outlets receiving power from one of these circuits must be labeled as Protected by GFCI. Older homes without such protection must be retrofitted when replacing outlets near sources of moisture, such as sinks, water heaters, washing machines, outdoors and garages. You will need to use decor style face plates (rectangular outlet hole) with these. Old style outlets can be used downstream on protected circuits. This video is an example of a home having an outdoor outlet protected by a GFCI upstream from a weather protected area (garage) GFCI. It's likely a newer home built with NEC codes from the 1990s and later. I have a brother whose home was built in the early 80s. His bathrooms were the only circuits protected by GFCIs. His guest half bath GFCI protects his 2 full bathrooms as well. GFCIs were not required in his kitchen, garage, laundry or outside at the time.

One last thing I do recall, someone telling me that the GFCI receptacle is a very last thing before the circuit breaker.
All the receptacles Daisy chain in the circuit should be on the south side of the GFCI.
So in case I’m not very very clear it goes like thisplug, plug, plug, GFCI, breaker

I had to ask my friend Siri and your site came up.
Had an outside receptacle that wasn’t working and also the receptacle in the cargo bay of the RV that plugged in or powered up the vacuum system.
All the breakers were fine. I even traced back the breaker that powered up this circuit and the breaker was OK
So I did what you said around for another receptacle that had a GFCI on it and it was in the bathroom so I didn’t have my circuit with me so I got the cell phone charger and plugged it in along with the cell phone and nothing happened until I push the reset button And then the cell phone indicated charge so I went outside and check the LED lights on the one circuit and they are working and then I check the built-in vacuum system and it is working.
So now what we need to do is figure out what caused the circuit to blow in the first place
But I think I figured out what it was, I had a shop vac plugged into the receptacle those exposed the elements might’ve got water on the switch, which may have shorted it out that was several days ago, and the weather has dried up the vacuum works.
    so everything looks good.
Thank you for the tip. Much appreciated.

Thanks for this! The outlet in my main bathroom had stopped working, turns out the outlet in the other bathroom had tripped. I also have a gfci outlet in my garage that has a Test/Reset button on it, it's in the Reset position, and the little light is on, but I can't power anything off the outlet. No breakers are off. I'm assuming that outlet is just dead then?

    • @maxheadroom8857
      @maxheadroom8857 2 роки тому

Your reply says 7 months ago from when I'm replying (August 27 2022). You probably found out your GFCI went bad. I just had mine fail in my garage. I retrofitted my garage circuit with one in 2015. My garage is detached, and has 1 breaker powering all lights & outlets in the garage. The first outlet feeds everything downstream in my garage. The test switch refused to reset, and the test light indicated the GFCI failed. I just replaced it with a new one, and it's back to work. I upgraded my bathroom to a GFCI at the same time in 2015. My home is an older home on 1955 NEC codes. When replacing older home outlets, it's wise to try upgrading to GFCIs when replacing Laundry, Garage, outdoor, bath and Kitchen outlets (and garbage disposal switches if they're combo outlet/switches).

Is your property built in the early 60s or earlier? If you replaced a 2 prong in the bath or kitchen and it's built in that period or earlier, your metal box might either be grounded behind the wall or not grounded. And many homes used the cold water pipes to ground the electrical. If your home at 1 time had steel pipes replaced with copper, the plumber might not have attached any ground wires attached on the old steel pipes to the copper pipes. If you had steel or copper pipes replaced or repaired with sections of Pex pipe, the ground circuit has been broken. My home was built in 1955, with ground wires attached to the box behind the wall. I used a ground clip and wire to ground my GFCI to the old box. My original outlet was one of a few 3 prongs in my house, and was the original outlet from 1955. The old code required grounded outlets near sinks at the time, grounded outdoor lights, grounded outside outlets and grounded garage fixture boxes. My living room, bedrooms and kitchen outlets farther than 6 feet from the sink are not grounded.
