Animation isn't a genre, it's a medium just the same as any other drama, action, comedy, and more. Animation isn't for children, at least most, since adults can enjoy them too, and they don't make you less of an adult.

“A Silent Voice” is one of the most stunning movies I’ve seen. Yes the story would have worked as a live action but anyone who’s seen it would agree that the melancholy, hopeful, devastating feeling that movie creates would be completely lost if the animation was gone. It’s gorgeous and that story of redemption would not have been as hard hitting in live action.

i think we should see more slice of life animation in western media. in anime they have this kind of stories. like, sometimes i don't need to watch an animated movie with constant jokes and obnoxious celebrity voice acting. sometimes i just need to watch an animated movie about people living their life and learning. and i think that's a missed opportunity because animation is an amazing art form. you can tell stories with not just characters talking but also animation style and cinematography. you said it best: "weirder is better". animation is at its peak when it doesn't try to mimic reality but instead express something beyond it, something that maybe we all felt but never saw. for example the reason bojack connected with so many people isnt because its the most perfect and realistic rendition of an alcohol addict but because it had the freedom to transcend beyond what reality can visually project into our eyes physically by exploring the philosophical and psychological aspect of where these emotions are coming from in a form of a cartoon horse that is so perfectly simple it shuts off the part in our brains thats responsible for thinking "is this a real person?" (because its so obviously not) and makes way for us to meet with the full unfiltered ramifications of alcohol addiction that feel so real that even without noticing, only animation can make us all collectively yet subconsciously go "what if im this person?" and that is so powerful most people aren't ready for that so they'll just keep dismissing it like "a show about a talking horse? lol get out of here you brony weirdo" and thats when i ask myself, does *everyone* even deserve to enjoy this medium?

You can’t achieve that level of greatness without animation. So it’s actually all animated, just made to look live-action

as an animator its always so nice and surprising to see videos like this and im always so weirdly shocked when someone outside of the animation industry appreciates the art. I think a lot of us working in the field feel like most people don't care about animation and what we do. It can be a bit sad sometimes since its such a tough process. Finishing production on a short film feels like a miracle, and don't get me started on feature films, I have no idea how people pull this off, it must be close to impossible. The amount of work that goes into making animation is INSANE, requires tons of people that most of the time have been training to be artists since they were children. It can be pretty depressing when nobody wants to watch your work simply because they think the medium is for kids. And the less people watch animation the less likely it is that adult/experimental animation will get funding. So those films dont get made unfortunately. There are plenty of people with vision and ideas but not a lot of people that are willing to take the risk to fund those films. So yeah, thanks for making this video. And yall should go watch Flee, it's an absolute travesty that it lost the Oscar

I know the Turning Red hype is still ongoing but this video made me realize just another aspect of why I love it so much?? As a Chinese-Canadian girl that grew up in Toronto I already felt super SEEN by the movie, but the animation style also helped transport the audience back to the *feeling* of 2000s Toronto that live action wouldn't have been able to do. Instead of a Scott Pilgrim-esque grimy 2010s Toronto (which to be fair, wasn't 100% live action), the animation in Turning Red made my city look SO beautiful and magical!!

People will talk about how "animation is for kids" but seem to ignore a few things like how every single one of us used to be children at some point, or how much of the stuff we watched as kids wasn't just animated, but it was something that could take the time to teach and tell us something that would be a part of our everyday lives.
One of my favorite animated movies to this day is Wolf Children, a film about a mother raising children that are half human and half wolf, which honestly in my opinion has one of the best messages about finding your calling in life.
Yeah, animation isn't live action, but that in no way changes what it has to offer.

one of the sadder parts of animated movies getting more attention is that amazing voice actors are getting replaces with voices from generic action movie stars who don't know how to do it properly. don't get me wrong, some actors can do both but voice acting is such a different skill compared to regular acting.
but of course, it has always been true that slapping a famous actor on the cover of a movie increases your sale exponentially.

Coraline is 100% the greatest movie of all time imo. Ever since I saw it 10 years ago, I just can’t stop thinking about it. The thing about using imagery to tell a story is that, through those images that story becomes seared into your brain. When I finish watching a film, I can’t really remember much about it. Characters names leave my brain, as well as most of the plot. But Coraline’s use of imagery I think about it everyday. I’m not even being hyperbolic. Only other film that makes me feel similarly is Edward Scissorhands.

Animation also has the greatest potential for visual narratives IMO, the "show, don't tell" method, coz you're only limited by your imagination (& budget) with how you'll express an idea or create a vibe. In _Kimi no Nawa_ (Your Name) that short animation when the girl took a photo of the cake with her phone is one of my fave little animated sequences, along with some beautiful scenes. _A Silent Voice_ didn't strike me as much the first watch (partly coz of some confusing scenes in the beginning), but Kyoto Animation more than any other anime studio makes a lot of use of the actual character animation to tell their stories or describe their characters, and I also watched the movie with my aunt who didn't understand the spoken or subtitle language but she understood the story just from the visuals. A lot of anime series unfortunately do the opposite and have to say a lot of obvious stuff while the visual is just a facial close-up.

not only is this already a classic, but it's also VERY timely. kudos for making this video when there's the whole situation with new deal for animation going on. not only are animators (and voice actors, sometimes) basically invisible, and not only is animation just disregarded and considered "less serious" in general, but it's reflected in how they're paid! it's awful, and you're 100000% right about the freedom and specific artistic style of animation. it's AMAZING.
and even the stuff that's "for kids" is often still enjoyable for adults, or has serious themes that are valuable.
arcane and the legend of vox machina have been great. also this video is filled with awesome recs--AND thank you for the reminder about the movie 9! i only ever saw it once but holy shit it was wild. i feel like i might get it and appreciate it more now that i'm older.

Animator speaking here : great video but there is a few things to adress. (I'm french btw so my english may not be perfect).
    - 2D animation does not "casually" pulls out incredible scenes, the 30s Levi scene we see in your video took several months to make, and costed a lot, in money and in human energy. Same goes for prince of egypt or any really visually impressive scene. Any stuff with high framerate, big camera movement or insane amount of detail will demand more time and staff working on it (and more talented people) therefore making it very expensive. You are right though, in that, for an animated production, animating a dragon-man walking in a fantasy castle will take the same amount of work than for a animating high-schooler walking down a regular street. With the same amount of appeal.
    - You said Spiderman : into the spiderverse tried to replicate the feeling of reading a comicbook, well it also try to replicate... a 2D animated style. Because yes, the entire movie is in 3D. Very beautiful, heavily stylised 3D. And with so many people still believing it's 2D, it's safe to say they succeded.
