    Almost all of the best shows (Breaking Bad, Gravity Falls, Avatar The Last Airbender) are ones that stuck according to their plan from the start and didn't change that vision that the creator had, no matter if the audience wanted more of it, they knew it had to end there.

      Wasn't Jesse from Breaking Bad supposed to be a minor character, but because of the chemistry (pun intended) between him and Walter White the show runners decided to make him a main character? But I guess they did decide from the starting point that Walter was going to be the bar guy in the end and then end the show.

    Despite being technically cancelled, I think Bojack Horseman ended perfectly, because Netflix gave the creators a heads-up that the show was getting cancelled before they did their last season, so the creators were able to end it in a way they saw fit.

      Funnily enough, Arrow did something similar. Stephen Amelia (the main actor) said he was losing the spark during the filming of Season 6, so the show runner proposed one more full season followed by a much shorter final season.

    Everyone's saying it, but it's true: Avatar: The Last Airbender. Perfect length. Perfect chapters to thematically tie the story- water: the discovery and introduction. Earth: the grounding and fleshing out of the story. Fire: heightening of stakes up to the epic finale.
    You wish there was Air. Like, I was left wanting more. That's the best feeling. Even without the miscalleneous comics/books, I could imagine the story going forward. It lives on with a great memory left to me of the good times had.

      It gets worse in my opinion when the group is either split up or they add too many new characters. The charm of season 1 was that we followed a tight knit group of kids trying to save their friends. Then they added that girl and started splitting up the group, then in the third season there are way too many extra characters and the original group is barely together. I get that it's realistic for friends to outgrow each other at that age but for the audience, it felt like the show lost what it was supposed to be. I wish they'd stopped after the first or _maybe_ the second season.

      Korean filmmaking, screenwriting and acting (for the most part) is so on point. Finally, foreign audiences are getting to see soooo many incredible films and tv shows coming out of Korea. I read that directors train, basically like an apprentice, with a great director before they take on their own movies or shows. What I enjoy most about Korean shows and movies, aside from what you pointed out, is how they don’t feel the need to have actors articulate every thought or piece of exposition. A simple look or nod is enough for the audience to know or at least get some idea of what might be happening. We don’t need to be spoon fed, and that helps make a great drama, thriller or even horror story. If you enjoyed Squid Game, then you might also like Sweet Home (Netflix). Not quite the same level but still great. And check out Mother, another of Parasite writer/director’s earlier movies.

      Itaewon Class is such a good show. It tells a complete story over 16 episodes in which every character ends in a place that is different from where they began. There would be no story to tell in a second season. The show said everything it needed to.

    • @JonJayAllDay
      @JonJayAllDay 2 роки тому

      Yeah i think Western shows should take a big note from Korean shows, like make something good and short that can be wrapped in a season or two. If its good or popular enough maybe it'll get to go on, but i know and get that a lot western audiences are really use to shows, movies and media in general having multiple sequels, spinoffs and successors and theres a lot of money in that from a marketing side. So with that in mind to me the cut off for a show should be 5 seasons. Thats generally when shows start falling off, really in my opinion no show needs more than 5 seasons, because after that it usually just gets unnecessary to me. Like after that usually the creators, writers and executives start milking the show for all its worth, the shows popularity starts whining, or theres a dip in quality. Like if you cant do everything you set out to do at the beginning with 5 seasons worth of content then your doing something wrong. There are expectations, some shows have stayed good and maintained its popularity after more than 5 seasons but thats all they are, just the expectations not the norm.

I think the cast just had major loyalty to the show, most of them were pretty up & coming and not known in entertainment at that point so even though they did make other ventures while still filming friends, they ultimately knew friends is how and why they got their big breaks. Many actors in tv shows these days are already well known so they wouldn't feel that same connection to the shows they're doing regardless of how well it does.

But they said no. They had the arc planned and they finished it in 3 seasons and it´s one of the most perfect shows ever. Dark was perfectly planned out. Every line, every piece of clothing, of background was placed purposefully. The show would have suffered tremendously if that hadn´t been the case. They knew start and finish and it showed. I love that in shows.

    This is what I've been saying! Please let things end. Like sex education on netflix. Sure, I will watch every minute of that wonderful show but it pains me to see it decline in quality, when it could have been brilliant if kept shorter, and therefore more memorable. It becomes so obvious when shows throw in random subplots to stretch out the show. More examples: greys anatomy (omfg), orange is the new black, la casa de papel, outlander, supernatural, lupin, prison break, westworld, pretty little liars (omFg), vampire diaries and so on. Yes some of these shows are ridiculous but if they would have kept it cute, tight and short w a clear vision of how is should END it would have been atleast OK. Instead what happens is the show becomes unbearable and unforgettable. The filler episodes of nonsense ruin the entire thing. The viewer is not stupid and it shows when the producers/showrunners lack a clear vision of how the story will end in a way that is satisfying for the people that are invested in the characters and the world.
    I think the show Fleabag is a PERFECT show where the creator really knew how to create a show that does NOT overstay its welcome. Instead, it becomes rewatchable with a tight script and smart writing.
    Great video!

      apparently this was the intended ending for a while. It just unfortunately is the perfect setup for capitalism to take advantage of. And I think the writers should've been aware of how contradictory the ending would be to set up a second season for a show that very clearly worked best as a one-off. Let alone, that the thought of Gi-Hun taking down this entire organization is simply ridiculous.

      The only loose end that I wonder about is what happened to Ali's family. Is Gi-Hun going to use his money to help them? I suppose they could have a twist where the detective survived getting shot and falling off the cliff, although that seems a bit of a reach. The more I think about it, the more torn I am about the ending. I kind of want to see Gi-Hun take down the evil organization but I wonder if taking the cynical route and just having him get on the plane would be better. At least he won the bet against Il-Nam.

    There's NO way a second season of Squid Game could be as good as the first. The first season had the novelty of the games themselves and half the fun (if not all of it) was discovering how they worked, the small glimpses of the stuff behind the scenes serving to whet our appetites while working as a self-contained critique of capitalism. With maybe the exception of the cop and his brother (which imo could never stand alone as an entire season unless some serious finesse is involved), there's just nothing a second season could bring to the table in terms of excitement and thrills. All we can hope for is that it's artistically competent.

      Nah The MCU is based on it’s comics, that means it has so many stories/adaptations to tell versus trying to create a completely original story and move it along for 10 years. I do believe the average person will get tired of the MCU just because of that though

    • @leoalper4530
      @leoalper4530 2 роки тому +4

      @TheGlassesPro what makes the MCU potentially endless without needing to give it a conclusion is the fact it’s based off the comics that are also endless. However, the issue that arises there is the characters. The characters can’t go on forever because their actors get too old eventually. You can’t keep swapping your entire cast every 10-15 years for new characters as the fans no longer have any original characters there. Comics don’t have this issue as they are drawings. I wonder how Marvel will deal with this

    • @Jearbearjenkins
      @Jearbearjenkins 2 роки тому +1

      @@leoalper4530 I think if they “hand the torch over” to likeable actors. Look at tom holland for example. If they get more younger actors in the next 5-7 years and give them the spotlight and the fans end up liking them they can easily move the mcu over to those characters and then introduce new youngsters etc

    • @leoalper4530
      @leoalper4530 2 роки тому +1

      @@Jearbearjenkins that's what they are doing at the moment. Phase 4 and 5 are serving as "transition" phases for the MCU. They are introducing new characters or changing the status of pre-established characters to accomodate for a "handing of the torch". Fantastic 4 and X-Men are also on the way so there is still tons left to do to replace the Avengers. I mean they could even do new Avengers all together, such as Young Avengers, or West Coast Avengers. So there is still lots for the MCU to do at the moment. But you can only do this strategy so many times. How many times can you have a 10-15 year saga and then replace your characters and ask fans to reinvest themselves in new characters? Especially if they are replacements of beloved characters. I mean now that Disney owns tons of new characters, it can work but can they really do that again once those new characters also get their movies and have their run before leaving? That's why I think the MCU will eventually have to end. Let's just hope it ends with grace and not abruptly when their movies start becoming consistently shit.

    Squid Game has even less reason than a lot of shows to stay past its welcome since it's bound by the fact that it's so tied to its allegory and message about current stage capitalism and it pretty perfectly conveyed said message, every character played their role and died when necessary, the plot is bigger than Gi-hun or Sangwoo or Saebyeok or the cop or whoever else, and sure, there's open ends whether Jun-ho survived being shot, what happened for his brother to end up like that and of course the ending few seconds with Gi-hun not getting on the plane and clearly planning something but it doesn't bother me personally if those plot points are ever tied up and I'm happy for it to stay open ended because Squid Game is set in the real world, it's not like Hunger Games where while it has a similar ideology behind it; it's dystopian and otherwordly and it's in part a self-insert fantasy/projecting means for teenagers. It doesn't do any service to Squid Game as a series if you had Gi-hun and Jun-ho end the games. Because that means, to the viewers and in relation to said allegory, you gonna have Gi-hun quite literally ending capitalism.
    And that would just be weird as hell and bad writing if you took an average, outright goofy, cinnamon roll ass, sweet character like Gi-hun, who is meant to be a direct stand-in for a bunch of real world problems and impoverished people (right down to the strike he took a part in 11 years ago being based on a real workers strike that happened in South Korea in 2009) and whose character is meant to be all about kindness, caring, trust and humanity persevering in spite of great greed, pain and cruelty being something's he's faced with and given the option to take part in (and it being a big point that it is _not_ in his character to hurt others, Saebyeok outright says it when he considers killing Sangwoo, not like someone like Katniss who is a far more fantastical character and is trained like a warrior, Gi-hun is literally just someone's nice, cute dad who done fucked up), and just had him going John McClane mode or turning into a genius and doing some guerilla warfare bullshit on a bunch of people who are meant to be stand-ins for real life billionaires, and I'm sorry but that's fucking dumb as hell bro
    tl;dr my point is asking for a Squid Game season 2 is almost like asking for a fucking Animal Farm or 1984 sequel, it's a piece of media trying to say something, conveying the state of affairs at a pretty specific time and place and while it'll hold weight for years to come it just cheapens it to make a season 2, it already said what it had to say so their choices going forward are either saying more of the same or having it turn into some whack, out of character, shark jump-y bullshit

      If the dead characters stay dead and there's a completely new cast except for the lead, with a new game
      OR
      If there's a prequel that dives into one of the dead character's past
      I'd be fine with that

    One show I use to love and went on I think for to long is “House”. It became predictable quickly. Someone has this strange illness, they get two or three diagnoses and then House magically figures out the real issue. Bt for some reason I really liked that show 😂

    I feel like insecure is going to be a show that goes out on top. Issa Rae and her team were smart enough to only make the episodes half a hour each and only 8 episodes or less per seaaon. That is just genius. We were always left wanting more. It's good to not overstay your welcome. Fleabag was one of the best shows of the 2010s and in hindsight AI appreciate Phoebe Waller-Brigde for giving us only the 12 episodes for the whole 2 seasons.

    So glad to see all the Good Place and Bojack Horseman Appreciation! I think Avatar The Last Airbender is another perfect example of having planned out a story to take place over 3 seasons and ending once that arc was complete and because of that we were granted a timeless masterpiece of a cartoon.

    Some networks decide to keep shows going because they see profit to be made from a continuation. What some networks fail to realize, however, is that a show which goes on too long and drops in quality affects rewatchability, which can affect future profits.

    I’m gonna be honest when I say that I think the way Stranger Things is being handled is absolutely phenomenal. The latest season has been my favorite by far, I just hope they don’t mess it up in the final…
