I came here just to hear people talk about Alina. She is still one of my favorite characters in the game. I just assumed that after she got her magical girl powers and got a new purpose in life she went off the deep end trying to pursue her masterpiece. And that the weight of expectations was thrown upon her.
Alina's attempt to record her suicide into an art piece reminded me of a real incident with the Bjork Stalker. Research it if you're curious but be warned, it's very graphic.
The Magius being completely evil and fine with murder was the way the writers found to easily turn the protagonists's point of view into the "correct" one, but it was a simple solution that came at the expense of the great stories that were written in the MSS. It's almost as if the writing direction was different for each one of them, and I feel like that is actually very recurrent in magia record, sadly. There are fantastic MSS stories, such as Rika's, Ren's, Alina's and Karin's MSS, but then you also have stories like Sayaka's, Oriko's, and the Main Story itself, where it's extremely dumbed down and sadly lacks in depth. The difference between MSS+MHT Alina and Main Story Alina honestly makes me feel like they weren't written under the same direction and the story written later on completely disregarded a lot of aspects the stories written beforehand had, OR that a severe lack of communication ocurred. A character having two versions of themselves that are so distant from each other isn't something done on purpose, or at least shouldn't be. Alina still best girl tho (^:
As someone who's only knowledge of who she is extends to the word "evil artist" I thought she would be close to someone like The Machinist from Popgoes, this line fits what I think she is probably like perfectly: "But this is what I get for being the outcast with weird, cruel ideas, I guess... By "this", I mean incredible technology, endless power... stuff like that ... I'm sorry, did you think I would regret any of this? No..."
Ive only seen her anime apearance and got bored, starting to wonder about her and her doppel: it didnt seem to be attacher to her she safely falls onto it. After watching the dirst part of your video discussing her backstory it made nearperfect sense. Doppels come from despair, so in Alinas case it was the convintion that both she and her art were meaningless and only poisons whoever looks at it expecting to see a theme: and so her doppel is art that drives everyone it touches mad. Maybe it comes out from her mind?
I think she STARTED as a troubled youth and the whole process of making art from witches and going along with the magius and leting her do as she pleases caused her to become the evil psychopath.
The way I see it, Alina has always solely lived for her art and nothing else (except Karin😉) to the extent that she becomes rather angry when she feels her artwork is being disturbed. She sees the Magius work as her own artwork and the Mikazuki Villa girls as a disturbance to said artwork, therefore always lashing out against them. When it comes to the destruction of Kamihama, well she's always had a fascination with death and places little value on lives (her's included). So while it is a little jarring to see the difference in crazy between her MSS and main story, I think it's still pretty cohesive to her character, and as you say, she's complex.
I think Alina was the first Person (villian, choose your label) whos pain and desperation I could feel behind the mask of arrogance (choose your label). I feel so sorry for her and I sympathice with her.
I think Alina is a troubled youth and arc 2 did her strangely. Like I dont know how you feel about her in arc 2 Raz. I feel like she is either torn or broken and if she is ever put back together I dont know where she will go from there however I do want her to find happiness and be happy with Karin. Where they can help each other grow and be better at what they love
I think the best that could happen to Alina is she turns ""good"" but keeps her craziness on a more lowkey level. Like Alina proposes something crazy but then ends up getting shot down by Karin (or the others) or she just shoots herself down instead that "maybe thats not a good idea".
I related to Alina, I'm an artist and sometimes I make art because I just want to. And it's by far, the BEST MAGIA OUTFIT EVER! I wish she was in the original series and written better she is a perfect evil magical girl.
I have a feeling that alina shows her softer sides too karin , but when shes with other people she doesn't hold back her more agressive side too be honest
I love this! And I was so happy to find it, especially with where we’re about to be at in the anime.. with Holy Alina coming up. Aside from Homra, she’s always been one of my favorite 🎨💚💀🎉 I can say that-like as an artist, for leisure, as well as professionally- I found that, I’ve been told a lot, by people I looked up to. Especially while I was a teenager, to “lean into the darker emotions” “because that’s when my art is its best.” At times where I was feeling self-destructive and specifically suicidal. They told me my art is better when I was suffering. These adults, my manager, influential people that I looked up to. It’s not just me of course, every one hears Something along those lines, I think. I remember I was at the emergency room with a coworker of mine, and best friend (Whom, I’ve possibly, secretly been in love with her for years but that’s neither here nor there lol) she was being resuscitated from her second suicide attempt and her publicist or whatever comes in saying that her manuscript was amazing and “whatever she was on he wanted some”- needless to say I smacked him and we both got booted out of the hospital but… It’s that type of pressure, that’s kind of like the sick side of everything, When you make a profession as an artist. From what I’ve experienced.
Truth to be told. I originally thought Alina was disgusting, then she came in the mail for the anniversary dree pulls on NA and I did her personal story and then I was like what happened? How did this character transitioned from this point to the main story version?. I still find her disgusting but I'm intersted in what person she could potentially become. At least I'm glad she hasn't been cruel to Karin. I think Karin would actually stand up for herself and leave if alina truely were to harm her.
4 months late but I really feel like answering this one. The answer is, she would probably be dead. Without the pebble Iroha doesn't get a chance to wish for Ui to be cured and from there Touka and Nemu are never in contact with Kyubey to make a contract. Ui then Nemu then Touka each die and there is no one to find Alina's body after she jumps. It's possible she'd survive without medical help but it's very unlikely.
@Druid Cathbad Forgive me if I'm wrong, but pretty sure Alina already become Magical Girls even before Touka, Nemu and Ui make contracts with Kyubey. The butterfly effects on the pebble only affects Iroha's fate since without it, she won't be a magical girl and the trio will die from their illness as they will never meet Kyubey. Alina also has no reason to go to hospital since, last time I recall, she only went there because she felt witch presence in the hospital, which actually came from Ui herself. And pretty sure the one who found Alina when she jumped off the roof wasn't the trio, but some random passerby. Means that Alina suicide attempts as well as her maming contract with Kyubey, was actually happened before the trio meet Kyubey.
@@justanobunagafanboy799 So maybe she was not batshit insane? but if she still had those thoughts though her life as a magical girl she would have witched out faster as maybe she wanted to see if she could look at her witch self before she died, and in wraith goes out Sayaka style protecting Karin?
I wonder what the BGM that appears at about 13:10 is. I searched through the game's BGM list for a long time and found nothing. Of course, it could just be an oversight on my part
I kinda hate that the NA version translates her obvious Engrish words to Italian, it's dumb and an insult to our intelligence... and I hate more that it totally fits her persona, more than the Engrish words do. I'm sure you've heard the theory that the 3 Magius are based on the 3 axis of evil in WWII, with Touka being Hitler, Alina being Mussolini and Nemu being Hirohito. I just hope when Alina returns she will be a sort of anti-hero or someone neutral who isn't good or bad.
I hate how they made her italian in the NA version. I get it, localization, it was inevitable. but still, her english is so funny in JP, I can never get used to seeing her speak italian lmao also, i think Alina's critic's message and how she felt worthless afterwards, even attempting suicide shows really good how much people's words can affect another one...

the thing is - mental disorders don't make you "crazy", it's your ableism showing. before touching experiences you don't understand it's good to do a research beforehand. as for Alina - personally, i think assuming a character is mentally ill because they are violent and disturbing is.. very troubling, to say the least. ties back into your own ableist assumption that mental illness makes you "crazy" and "shallow" and "lack agency over your own actions". not good no matter how you look at it
