I am really happy my daughter wanted her first car to be an old gem like this. I bet that would be an awesome ride driving a T-bird on a trip like that.
Two days after I turned 16, I bought a 61 Thunderbird (1970) for $225 and it had a new paint job. It came from a nice part of Oklahoma City and ran great. Seats were actually original leather and they were rotted out. I bought a used rear seat at a local salvage in the correct color for $20. I then had the front seats reupholstered for $200 and bought a set of Michelin tires. The 61 is still my favorite year thunderbird. I read long ago that the reason 61s are hard to find is because the transmission case cracked easily and a lot of them went to an early grave. In 1970, there were four 61-63 Birds in the local salvage yard and not one of them was wrecked. It just cost more to repair them than they were worth. Congratulations on your find and I hope your daughter enjoys it once you get it done.
First car my wife and I had was a '61 T-bird. One of the best road cars ever! Used to drive it from San Antonio to Chicago couple times a year.
