I was a country-music d.j. in 1976 and Rex Jr.'s song was released about then. I loved his voice, the harmonizing and the lyrics. Come to think of it his backup singers for this song were: "The Sons of the Pioneers." Each time I played it on the radio, I would crank up the volume on the studio monitors and enjoy this song. It sounds as great as ever.

I’m 58 years old and can’t believe I had never heard of Rex Allen Jr. until today on Pop Goes The Country. The voice is so unbelievable !!! I’ve listened to him all afternoon until midnight.Just can’t get over him.I had heard of his father.I believe I could listen to Rex Jr. sing all the time.

Have you heard Rex Allen Jr's song "Arizona"? You can find it on UA-cam set to beautiful Arizona scenery. It became our new (second) state song, and brings moist eyes to many. One is ua-cam.com/video/8dkW0hFEDso/v-deo.html, that gives a hat-tip to Rex Sr. (who was a well known "singing cowboy" during the golden age of Western movies) in the closing frames, and another is ua-cam.com/video/EQ4TKhEe8dc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/sVuma73fZYs/v-deo.html Arizonans (that love Arizona) love this song: it's worth a listen. (I have compiled a playlist of scenic Arizona videos, making a video tour of the state, and this song is interspersed throughout.)

The backup group was the Reinsmen not the Pioneers - they were Rex Sr's backup group when he did charity appearances and dozens and dozens of live shows over the years. They recorded many wonderful albums of their own in the 60's thru the 80's, in the tradition of the Sons and the other great Western groups from the Golden Age of the Silver Screen Cowboys. I believe this song was written by Snuff Garrett who was also the producer of the album. Rex Jr had and still has a great voice - wish we could see and hear more of him.

I got to see him live way back in the 80's when he opened a show for Reba. It was a San Antonio Police Officer's Benefit performance. That was without a doubt the best country music concert I've ever attended. Rex Allen Jr. was amazing and Reba sang her heart out. It was about the time she was just really starting to get some major exposure and after the show she sat on the stage and signed autographs for over an hour. Rex Allen Jr. signed my purse and I still have it to this day.

When I was young it was Country and Western. Then all these new people came along and all of a sudden it was just Country. Bring back Slim Dusty and Hank Snow and ones like them.. Lee Kernaghan and Adam Harvey do what it says up the top. It is COUNTRY AND WESTERN. itr sure ain't the same anymore.

My mistake, Rex Jr and his then wife Judy wrote this. Snuff wrote 'Last of the Silver Screen Cowboys'. But the Reinsmen were the backup singers.

Does he look like his dad or what? Oh my! He sounds quite a bit like him too. Swell version of the song!

How could he omit the name 'Marty Robbins' from inclusion in what is a great song? Marty almost single handedly kept western music to the fore both on record and in his Opry and concert appearances for year after year.

Yeah but Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers and Rex Allen did more and I do love Marty and John Cash is my favorite and they both did Western songs but less than the before mentioned.

tarquin45 Marty wouldn't allow his name to be used at that time,as he was trying to distance himself from the cowboy songs he did during the 1950s-60s, and break into another type of country genre.

Well.....Roy Rogers and Gene Auntry where amoung the Pioneers of Western Country music. And Rex Allen was his Daddy, so he had and wanted to say him too. He honestly could have gone on and on with the names! Singers that are truly missed in today's world.

For a really terrific band that puts Western in the country sound, check out The band Riders in the Sky.

At this point, just putting country back in the country sound would be fine.

Really want western back in the country sound? Then start buying that music! When a demand for Western Swing and Cowboy music starts moving up the sales charts, it'll come back! C'mon folks! Help me! I can't do it alone!

Problem is no one is doing it anymore! And ya know..... it was also the men that where behind the songs, folks you could look up to in real life and use as role models.

The correct title for this song is actually 'Can You Hear Those Pioneers.'

He tried. Once the song faded so did his message

Wasn't he good? A great voice. He made himself regardless of his dad(who was also great) . Too bad the rest of the industry & country fans didn't pay any attention to the message
