Could've built San Diego like this but like a sandstone, Walled, Mediterranean city with Greek style alleyways and stairs against the cliffs
Instead old folks built huge, hulking Suburbs, with huge grass lawns, and hedges, now our lives feel institutional like we're always stuck in after school traffic.
In fact, Carlsbad and Encinitas have done this and now, most of North county feels institutional everyday, like we're stuck in an office job land.
San Diego has more a greek vibe, nothing like LA, and beautiful clay with a dry plant life that would go well with Mediterranean architecture, especially in the Summer when the grass is dry and yellow, like the modernist apartments in spain or greece
