1218 was the most powerful steam engine in operation at the time just listen to that power of her working up that grade
Just as powerful as her contemporaries like the challengers and big boys of the Union Pacific.
@@phillyfan-182 very true
I was maybe 2 when my parents and my sister rode behind her in 1990. That whistle echos in my head to this day and her headlight at night. How could I forget it?
Lucky
It's a true shame that N&W 1218 had such a short excursion service career , 1987-1991, I really enjoy seeing footage of this locomotive in operation. The 1218 is still around today placed at the Roanoke Transportation Museum as a display equipment piece, however I do hope that 1218 would possibly be restored and returned back to operation in the future ; although I understand that this action is highly unlikely to occur I enjoy seeing past footage of 1218 in excursion service operation.
1218 had so much potential
Those old enough and lucky enough to witness the 1218 trackside. Remember her. She is a true beauty of N&W engineering. Miss her.
I saw 1218 pull an excursion just gliding along effortlessly without even breathing hard.
I have missed the chance to see her pull excursions because I wasn’t born yet and now she’s in the Virginia Museum of Transportation. I wish I could watch 1218 chug back into action, but she may be too expensive to restore, unless people help contribute money to the restoration crew for the locomotive.
Awesome video friend
Where was the street running bit shot. Amazing to have been that down your street
I believe that was in Erie, PA. That was an l time classic place to catch any train running through the streets. Those tracks have long been torn up now.
1218 is articulated everyone knows that
Just like her contemporaries the challengers and the big boys on the Union Pacific
Norfolk & Western 1218, You are Born to Run
I LOVE n&w 1218!🙂
Me too 🙂
5:58 is badass, I've always wanted to see one of these giants on a streetrunner!!! Where is that?
Erie, PA I believe, tracks there have been torn up for a while now though.
3:52 She also went on this 🌁 in Huntington ‘91.
Oh yeah
Awesome video and I hopefully someday should restore 1218 back to service soon 👍😎🚂🇺🇸
The chances of 1218 returning to steam again is very slim.
On the bright side, 3985 is coming back to life thanks to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.
@@evanf1293Never say never! People said #3985 will never return and look what’s happening.
@@Train_Tok_Man that's different, as NS doesn't want to have steam run on their tracks anymore since 2018.
@@evanf1293 Again, never say never.
Klasse video :)
Glad you enjoyed
That’s the first time I’ve ever seen 1218 doing street running
That sound is so awsome! No wonder it was called the awsome a
L❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉😊😊
I went on that train 1988 when Birmingham to Chattanooga and I enjoy it my parents been on a train 1945 world war II after that they was married in 1946 and I enjoy it to see the 1218 in Birmingham
Good old steam locomotive
Even though I was not around when she was operating she does look like a great engine, wish she is restored again
1218, the tried and true workhourse of steam
essa locomotiva sai muita fumaça mais e legal adorei
Extraordinary.
Lvv❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love the whistle.
YO A CROSSOVER
Her whistle is extremely similar to those fitted to Stanier locomotives in the UK.
I wonder if they ever plan to do annything with 1218 again
Rather doubtful considering 611 is operable and it barely has anything to do.
Not to mention they've been struggling to run 611 since 2018 with the new changes with NS and Amtrak.
1218’s more or less done. NS screwed the engine over when they had to put it back together post steam program
Sad given 611 spent so much time at Strasburg. With the success of UPs big boy youd think theyd restore her!@evanf1293
Norfolk Southern has much more things to worry about than spending millions by running steam. And VMT currently cannot even get 611 running, so restoring yet another larger steam locomotive doesn’t seem likely.
