@@jordannietos It's not "barely 720p" it's literally more than that. Someone tells this lady there are lots of people who loves this kind of bezels and screen size. Not everybody in love with total glass chunky front side :/
This phone is perfect for me, using the 2020 version, the size is ideal, easy to carry and fit in my small pocket, and great editing video with Luma Fusion, fast rendering, I never again edit my video with my macbook unless with heavy effect, but still comeback to this tiny device. The only downside is the battery.
Perfect phone for mountain biking (especially in a rugged case). Small enough to not get in the way and has a great camera to capture the views. The fingerprint sensor is a godsend and far more convenient for my needs. Battery life is good enough for the rides I go and then some. When you factor in Apple's support for their hardware, this is a companion you'll have with you for a while.
I’m still rocking iPhone 6s with 15.3.1 update recently. I’m used to small screens and prefer Touch ID than Face ID. This will be worth an upgrade. I’ll get one after apple this wwdc if apple stops support for 6s.
Still rocking the 6S is very smart. I’ve been caught up in the phone upgrade cycle, and in hindsight believe I’m just throwing my money away. The cameras are better with each new phone, but at $1k I’m just not sure the cost vs value is there to have a better camera. If I were to go back in time, I’d love to have just stuck with the 6S, and paid the $50 to replace the battery like every 2 or 3 years. Crazy how the 6S still has current updates.
Appoint missed by so many of you text snobs is; this phone is perfect for those who are blind or visually impaired seriously. For people like that, including me, A bigger more vibrant screen is irrelevant. Not to mention touch ID is superior. If your blind Face ID represents a positive security risk. Someone could get your phone and open it without your knowledge. And, if your eyeballs aren't functioning properly, recognition and security are reduced making it even easier.
I’m totally blind as well, and I agree with your points. I currently have the iPhone SE 2020, and for the most part, it’s perfect for me. My only complaint is the battery life.
I mean, any android phone has a fingerprint scanner (not sure why flagship apples don't) but yeah maybe overall this would be a better choice due to the price/performance ratio.
Terrible way of thinking about design - there are iconic designs from decades or even centuries ago that still look good today. Time passing is irrelevant!
The choice of reviewer for a certain phone is important to think through. A reviewer who is a power user, and is used to the flagship models will just not feel comfortable with the display of SE phones. Try getting a reviewer who is mid-aged/senior with reducing income trend, deteriorating eyesight (concerns over flickering), not into gaming or video watching over phone, but uses the phone for work mails, calls, social media and payment transactions and see what they feel about the SE. When you review a phone, review it for the intended customer segment which may not quite overlap with your website/YT channel’s subscriber profile.
I wound up pre ordering the iPhone SE 2022 for one huge reason, simplicity. There are other reasons like long support, great performance and probably the best camera on a $430 phone. The only concern I have is battery life, but I will say when I had the iPhone SE 2020 I wound up coming to appreciate all it offered for the price. While I do wish they had put touch ID in the power button and made this full screen, it's still a great overall value. Touch ID certainly is a huge selling point too because it's great and reliable.
It's thin. It's light. When one spends much of the day in front of a computer or often have an iPad handy, having a light and small phone is a pleasure. Slips into a pocket comfortably. I have a great camera that I carry with me when photography is what I'm out and about to do.
I’ve sold my iPhone 13 mini so I could buy the SE 3rd gen. I wasn’t content with the 13 mini. Came from an iPhone 11 and when I bought the 13 mini two years later (October 2021) I was highly disappointed. Not by the smaller screen size, though. iPhone 11 introduced Night Mode and is amazing. Night Mode on an iPhone 13 mini is awful compared to my previous 11. So, I’m happy now and left Night Mode in the dust. Cheers.
This week I bought a customer return almost new iPhone SE 2020 for £229. It does a similarly good job as the iPhone SE 2022. I do not need 5G because it is unavailable in most of the places that I visit.
The new iPhone SE just may be the phone a lot of people are looking for. I, for one, don't like phones getting larger and larger - prefer a more compact phone that fits in your pocket comfortably. Ans who needs phone cameras that hve higher nd higher pixel density? Once you get to 12MP or so, anything greater gives marginal picture quality improvement. I don't mind bezels - don't even notice them, so why does the reviewer make such a big deal out of that? Anyway, the new SE sounds pretty decent to me.
Congrats to Allison here, she has improved considerably since the first few videos, cadence is better and so on (before, her rhythm felt better to me at 1.25x playback). Overall... great job from the video team! ( still needs more Dieter, lol )
@@hect_ez Oh, I knew that... thanks for being informative though! It was just a silly joke - I usually mentioned that "this channel needs more Dieter" :) Let's hope he manages to influence the industry into actual, helpful changes!
@@MrAndreCoutinho as with everyone, of course. Allison Johnson is keenly talented as a tech reviewer. She's still feeling out scriptwriting for video, I think, but she's really smart and does a great job picking up the little things that end up making the biggest differences to daily use over time
These big symmetrical bezels are much better than not than thin unsymmetrical bezels with even a tear drop notch and a big but low quality display on some Android phones …
I decided to switch my work computer from Windows to a new MacBook and also decided it would be best to go all in and switch from Android to iPhone, too. Most Android phones have a fingerprint sensor, and many have face unlock on top of that. With the SE being the only iPhone with Touch ID, it was the only iPhone I'd even consider. It's updated processor plus practical features ticked enough boxes for me. Maybe I will miss an OLED display, but maybe I should also stop spending so much time on my phone.
I don't know why people are ready to compromise for an apple product but ask too much from android for the price. Apple has really brainwashed this generation.
Honestly who cares about the chunky bezels? The whole reason anyone would buy an iPhone SE is because they love the older iPhone design and don’t care about the new full screen non-home button designs. I absolutely love the iPhone SE because it’s almost like a modern iPod touch. No weird distractions with all the essentials I need in an iPhone. Also, much higher quality than android phones at a similar price range even though they might have larger displays.
This year, Apple should have put a bigger screen and smaller bezels on the SE. Does it work well? Yes, it is very smooth as you'd expect from Apple stuff but the experience is not great. Everything feels really claustrophobic, typing accurately is kinda difficult (and I don't have sausage fingers). At this point, an iPhone 12 or 13 mini would be a better choice.
I think the price should’ve lowered a bit keeping the same design. If they made it bigger increase the price because it will eat up sales. I used a secondhand 8+ for a bit and loved it. Even though I had a 13 pro it felt like a modern upgrade still. Still looks premium and beautiful in 2022.
iPhone SE is for people who don’t know what The Verge means. I think it’s awesome Apple makes a phone for people who are just regular folks, especially older people who have only known the standard iPhone platform. They just want to call there kids and scroll Facebook or search Maps. People like that don’t want new, they want familiar.
I feel a bit slighted that this can get Photographic Styles and my 12 Pro Max can’t. I’m not sure if I’d remember to constantly thumb through it for every photo but it would be nice to have given how advanced the lenses on this phone are vs the SE.
Reasons I went with Android, to get new features on iOS you have to buy the latest phone that came out with that feature, while on Android features roll down to older models too

@@MrAndreCoutinho the 8+? I disagree. I went from a 7+ to a 2020 SE. The 7+/8+ gives a decent screen size. Yes the device is bigger and probably too big for 1 hand use. But on the flip side the 4.7” is tiny and too small with many apps etc not working as intended. You have to scroll for everything

I have a feeling the battery is the same size as the previous one. Or maybe they gave the same capacity as the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 had a bigger battery than the iPhone 8 did.
Apple confirmed that it's larger, though they didn't specify how much. The new chipset is more battery-efficient, so I trust the battery will last a bit longer even with a 5G modem, especially since it doesn't have to waste so much energy on mm-wave. Still, I doubt it's anywhere as good as heavy users would need
One could argue the iPhone 13 it’s just an iPhone X which came out the same year as the iPhone 8 with gestures and squared off edges. That is “old” also. There are those of us who love the home button and that is who this phone is made for
We gotta understand the person buying the SE doesn't realise this. It's different for us tech enthusiasts, but for the normal consumer (in the US, idk if this phone will do well in other markets) this phone is a good option + you know it's "Apple". So that's that.
Apple knows their market for the SE, which is mainly Middle School aged people. Companies are reviewing this phone as though the SE is made for adults.
Well it isn’t just middle schoolers. But also seniors that can’t easily learn a gesture based system. Or the visually impaired that need the familiar layout and Touch ID.
I'm confused help me what should I buy? Isn't Iphone 11 / iPhone 12 mini are the nearest competitor for this SE? bigger screen, night mode, extra cameras, slightly under powered processor ?
Green bubbles are not the problem. Most people just want a phone that’s easy to use and reliable. Plus a lot of people don’t like change and they want something familiar.

Am I the only one that is already missing Dieter and his charismatic energy..
What happened to him?
@@XXtheJUMPoffXX he has left The Verge, and has moved on to Google. He made a video 2 weeks ago, it’s on the channel
Idk why but I love the concept of iPhone SE.
touch id rocks
At first I thought she was gonna sing or rap. The first note was on-point.
IKR HAHA
I don’t get how she has trouble reading texts on here , how did she ever survive the era of iPhone 3-5-6 ?
I just want a home button. If they made a luxury version with it, I’d get it
I’m still rocking iPhone 6s with 15.3.1 update recently.
@@MichaelSeneschal I have Iphone 13 pro but I will have to replace the battery in few years anyway, i’m not seen point anymore to pay 1k for a Phone.
@@heathersailes4280 that is a problem. Of course if you turn the screen brightness down to zero, that helps somewhat
I mean, any android phone has a fingerprint scanner (not sure why flagship apples don't) but yeah maybe overall this would be a better choice due to the price/performance ratio.
Visually impaired - Smaller phone?
Nice logic
As a man still rocking around with the 1st Gen SE (I love the iPhone 5 design) this new SE is massive 😅
The bass in that intro music i was like woo hold on got distracted 🤣
Allison was so good in that closing section! 😂😂👌
I bought an used unlocked iPhone SE in perfect condition for about two hundred
Pretty sad we won’t be seeing Dieter on here anymore…
One of the best reviews, pacing reminded me of 2009.
He left the verge for google, so we sadly won't be seeing him here anymore
@@hect_ez Oh, I knew that... thanks for being informative though! It was just a silly joke - I usually mentioned that "this channel needs more Dieter" :)
Let's hope he manages to influence the industry into actual, helpful changes!
yes, recognition is due, she really improved her game, but there's room for more.
@@MrAndreCoutinho as with everyone, of course. Allison Johnson is keenly talented as a tech reviewer. She's still feeling out scriptwriting for video, I think, but she's really smart and does a great job picking up the little things that end up making the biggest differences to daily use over time
I really enjoyed listening to this reviewer. She really simplified things and considered the audience who would buy an SE. Great job!
“Handoff” is the only reason I own Apple ecosystem, the way devices sync up is mesmerizing. The best that has been seen technologically.
@@rikiyrkshkmr except OP didn't say anything about the price? bring your question to another thread that's actually relevant
I miss this design so much. I’m thinking of changing my iPhone 11 for the SE 3
I love iPhones 📱 I Love My iPhone 📲 13 But The iPhone 📱 SE 2G Is Super Fast 💨 & Cool but I need the new iPhone SE 3 G
the lack of night mode is really, really shameful.
I think its great we may actually see young people communicating with each other face to face instead of living their lives through selfies.
I dont understand why someone would get this instead of a 12 mini
Yep, they should of make it at least 5.8 inch the screen.
iPhone SE is for people who don’t know what The Verge means. I think it’s awesome Apple makes a phone for people who are just regular folks, especially older people who have only known the standard iPhone platform. They just want to call there kids and scroll Facebook or search Maps. People like that don’t want new, they want familiar.
Basically a VW sedan (the OG beetle) with a Tesla p90 engine, in cellphone form.
I prefer the bezels over the notch. Which is why I’m going to by the SE over 13.
that's a really stupid reason
@@zumabbar Everyone has their own preferences
@@filbao8113 yes, and some of them can be stupid
Lol I’m still using my iPhone 7 and love it the home button is my everything I was going to upgrade to iPhone 13 but I invested in stocks instead
I feel a bit slighted that this can get Photographic Styles and my 12 Pro Max can’t. I’m not sure if I’d remember to constantly thumb through it for every photo but it would be nice to have given how advanced the lenses on this phone are vs the SE.
Reasons I went with Android, to get new features on iOS you have to buy the latest phone that came out with that feature, while on Android features roll down to older models too
But the 12 has night mode. That’s a must have, which the SE doesn’t have.
@@j7704 Photographic Styles requires hardware they don't have on older iPhones. If they tried to ship it to older phones via an iOS update, they would have just... reinvented filters
@@Gilamath. This device has the same camera hardware as iphone 8 and still has the option. So nope, there's no need for dedicated hardware. It's just apple's way of pushing people to buy new iphones
@@akashr2856 incorrect. The iPhone SE has upgraded camera internals. You should research the topic. The SE does not have an iPhone 8 camera, just as the 2020 iPhone did not have an iPhone 8 camera
I know friends who are still using the iPhone 6 and this phone would be the best upgrade for them!
Ok I just watched both and I think this review is better than MKBHD's.
True
grabbed for my mom. My dad uses an iPhone and my mom currently uses an Android and both aren't english proficient. Got them on the same platform so that my dad can adjust the settings since it's the same as his phone. lol. Big Brain.
My 200 dollar phone from 2019 is still fine. with 6.2 inch screen and 4000 amp battery , which last a whole day. So Why someone would buy that phone for 480 dollar (128 gb)? That is just waste of money. You should get another far better phone than this with 400 dollar. Beside a $400 android - this $400 iPhone will look outdated. It will look like from another era
I am watching this on my iphone se 2016!
5.5" display for SE is gonna sell like hot cakes
Agree maybe the iPhone SE 4 will do that
which is what apple dont want. Apple made SE to trap new iPhone users. the SE is a sampler.
ah the iphone se 2022 the last of the steve jobs era phones such a great phone very reliable
Very nice review 👍🏿
Watching this on 6s and i love the display need that a15
I own the 2020 SE, but wish they had released the 2022 SE in the iPhone 8+ chassis. Ie same old design to distinguish it from the more expensive full screen offerings, but allowed a much more usable 5.5" screen)
I have this phone and the footprint is horrible for one hand use.
@@tobyr8555 Um why wouldn't you get a 13 mini or 13 of that's your issues with this phone. There is no way with the increased screen and overall size you want that the phone stays in this price bracket. I think this is for outdoor type people that are not enslaved by the screen and are not addicted to selfies.
Set the playback speed to 1.25 and the review felt so much better!

Dieter left like a week ago and you already putting emojis in your thumbnail hahahaha
I think people like small phones and small screens. Bigger phones are too unwieldy.
Even then something like the mini series gives you a larger screen in an even smaller footprint. Not to mention that high res OLED screen that seals the deal.
Great review! presenter is getting better and better, becoming one of my favorites. Producers and editors also get a fantastic job!
Allison Johnson is a great communicator and low-key brilliant. I'm glad she's hosting more reviews now
The se is my perfect upgrade. Dont have to deal with the god awful Face ID and the home button actually makes sense instead of the gimmicky gestures. Was praying they kept the home button on this one and was pleasantly surprised. My se 2016 is starting to slow down so it’s time for it to retire next to my 4s and 3GS
I like the sound in the background 👍🏿
Loved the colorful wallpaper, where can I get it?
Very good review ✨👌🏽
Give us back dieter.(periodt)
I traded my 12 Pro Max for a 2022 SE. It’s a much better experience for a phone/camera.
I can only see having a bigger phone if you don’t have a laptop, iPad, or computer.
To me only thing this new iphone se missing is the night mode.. I really hoped they had it in it... :(
I am downgrading from my 13 mini to the se and regarding 5G, I don’t have it on my phone because my SIM card is 7 years old. Big flex?
The only trouble is the pixel 5a is not available in the uk
I have a feeling the battery is the same size as the previous one. Or maybe they gave the same capacity as the iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 had a bigger battery than the iPhone 8 did.
Apple confirmed that it's larger, though they didn't specify how much. The new chipset is more battery-efficient, so I trust the battery will last a bit longer even with a 5G modem, especially since it doesn't have to waste so much energy on mm-wave. Still, I doubt it's anywhere as good as heavy users would need
@@Gilamath. yeah, definitely
the a15 makes it 25% more efficient so battery life will be greatly improved
The screen doesn't bug me because I do own a 2nd generation SE and I do enjoy using it.
One could argue the iPhone 13 it’s just an iPhone X which came out the same year as the iPhone 8 with gestures and squared off edges. That is “old” also. There are those of us who love the home button and that is who this phone is made for
She is almost singing her lines. Good to hear. Quality review from Verge!!
This was a really great review.
Great presentation!
Honest review. Thanks :)
5.5 inch is the sweet spot for me
She's clearly biased. Someone who is buying this is unlikely to be so used to the ultra high end specs
We gotta understand the person buying the SE doesn't realise this. It's different for us tech enthusiasts, but for the normal consumer (in the US, idk if this phone will do well in other markets) this phone is a good option + you know it's "Apple". So that's that.
Might just be me but it feels like the teleprompter for this video was a little too far away from the camera.
I love how they do their videos!
No offense Allison, but REALLY missing Dieter here. Maybe “pivot to video” isn’t for everyone, or maybe you just need a cup of coffee or something.
The SE would have been good if they used the Plus model
Apple knows their market for the SE, which is mainly Middle School aged people. Companies are reviewing this phone as though the SE is made for adults.
Well it isn’t just middle schoolers. But also seniors that can’t easily learn a gesture based system. Or the visually impaired that need the familiar layout and Touch ID.
@@thedavidj1996 Good point. Apple knows their audience, and it’s definitely not approximately 20-50 year olds, like all the YT reviews are focused on.
It would've been cool if apple would've put the squared edges on this phone
For someone looking for their first iPhone, this or 12/13 mini?
13 mini is fancy
Apple needs to bring back the finger print function on all its phone.
