Or... Using Vanilla Blender, is like trying to cut Bread with a Butter knife, and addons are the Sharper Bread knifes. You can still pretty much do Bools without Box Cutter, takes longer, but you can have them separate automatically too. I'll always use addons, i have them xD, but if you really can't afford Box Cutter, it's not a must for me at least (what i do most of the times, don't require box cutter). But Mesh Machin3, Machin3 Tools, and HardOps are some must.
After an entire year of learning vanilla Blender and mastering the ins and outs of the the main tools and features that are relevant to my work, and after creating several 3D models with it and gaining a high level of confidence in my modeling skills, I now feel that these Hardops and Boxcutter will be great for efficiency in my production. I'm past that stage where I have to prove to myself that I know how to use Blender without addons. Now it's time to start making more complex models faster. I'm at a stage where what's more important to me is my output speed and quality, not what tool I used. That's why I bought the two addons just a few days ago.
The vanilla blender tools are definitely not a butter knife lol. Blender is probably the most efficient modeling workflow out there right out of the box.
I wish there was more basic tutorials like this on Hops, Box Cutter makes sense, but I find Hops very opiniated and even if I bought it years ago, getting back to using it is always hard for me.
@@puntloosPD Thanks yep I know the channel, did watch many, could see the potential, but impossible to learn from them imo. I'm missing that initial click that I usually have with most tools I use.
Hello josh, great content, I am always following your tutorials, but I have a question, when I try to cut anything using Boxcutter the red box stops at a certain point, and then I have to scale the cutter manually, any advice?
I gave up on blender boolean. At random it produced non manifold geometry and did it often enough to cause significant rework. I don't care how it renders, but I must have manifold geometry. Do box cutter and hardops use the flaky boolean modifiers?
Daer Josh, i'm struggling with one issue since months. I would like to Set rivets on the surface of a modell/ aircraft, since months. Along vertices or so. Then baking a normal map. Could you make a tutorial if u have an idea? Cgeers, Axel
I love how the people using hard ops and boxcutter shit on blender, post ref links all over the place and hype expensive* addons, while making it sound like blender needs them. The Blender Foundation worked hard to keep blender free for everyone. *expensive as a beginner, the tools DO save a lot of time, but there is a wealth of free tools to speed up your workflow just by reducing the input required
I used to use Fusion360 mainly for the Boolean type workflow, but no need now . Its much faster in the end to use Ho/Bc and not have to deal with some retopo problems.
Hey Josh! Great fan of your videos. Question: Do you know how you can save your Boxcutter-Settings? I only want some modifiers to be sorted, but when I restart the settings are always reset.
Hey. It's little late I guess. For anyone wondering. As far as I know you can't really save these settings across your projects. What you can do is modify blender startup file. You can do it by opening blender and changing all the settings you want in boxcutter. Then you can press file->defaults->save startup file. Btw don't delete default cube if you think you will need it in the future.
If you want to cut a hole out of a face you can insert and then extrude? Also makes clean geo, booleans should be utilized more for when solving the topology can be sacrificed for later so you can get the idea/shape fast. At least in the game industry with Nanite, a lot more vertex color masking is happening with shaders, so you need clean topology, that edge damage color isn't baked as much it's a vertex color that needs perfect loops. Just a thought.
Hey Josh, thanks for the video. OK, help me sell this to me because its great and all, but people will say its cheating. Like you are using cheats to "win the game" or something. When people say "its a cheat", the back of mind says, "Well, the moment you go into preferences > addons and check ANYTHING on, aren't you using addons to "cheat?"" And secondly, if I were to make money with Blender, I don't think the client(s) cares what I did to get their product made, but that it is made, right? So, from your video, should one FIRST do vanilla and then get HardOps/Boxcutter or should we just go for it and get the addons?
they actually have a vanilla course for h surf on their site. its pretty fun too. yes the more you know whats going on under the surface the better. then do the adds. their is no such thing as cheating. great artists have always used the best tech and copied each other thats how you get great. once your feeling solid add your distinctiveness to your work as well.
I mean in that case using blender is already cheating, you should make your own modeling tool software to be a rEaL artist! yeah that is just bull shit. :) If someone comes and hammers down nails using a hammer, that is cool but if you have a nail gun and get the job done twice as fast no one is complaining. Just as it is still useful to know how to use a hammer, it can be good to know how to do something in vanilla blender aswell but. Yeah if this is something you want to do and it is going to save you time, grab it and learn it.
HardOps and Boxcutter was born from industry vets/experts who wanted to reduce TTER (time-to-end-result). At the core, these tools reduce the tedious and common tasks one would be doing, which is *efficiency*. As these tools evolved, based on feedback and general experience, common issues with modeling processes and baseline tools were addressed. As icing on the cake, new utilities and timesavers have been (and will continue to be) added. The only types out there that will refer to tools/addons such as these as "cheating", are purists. And that's totally fine- purists in any field tend to be heavily opinionated and set in their ways, typically very hard to get them to see the positives of tools/addons. Everyone has their own flow, and that's awesome. It's when those every and ones want to waste their cycles pushing them on others that... well, it's a waste of their pure time they could be spending modeling or being positive about something. Are these tools/addons necessary to be able to model a hard-surface mesh? No. Are they useful and do they reduce TTER when you get the workflows/shortcuts/etc down? Yes. It's not cheating. It's working smarter, rather than harder. Now imaging that you put as much time into a thing, but whilst working smarter. 1 hour baseline VS 1 hour smarter and more efficient. Odds are the 1 hour baseline "thing" isn't going to be as detailed and cool-as-hell as the other...
cannot use Maya anymore, I reported an issue with faceting after you move a pivot using "d" and then sending to Unreal or Unity in October last year and its still the latest version. Stupid little things like that and not being able to select a bone for IK , instead your told a workaround or use the outliner kills my Mojo.
i wonder how you see all the involve of AI and the relevant to learn those tools in this AI development days? it will be great if you make a video about all the storm of AI and modeling needed and workflow in the future in your opinion of course
literaly all the tools there are in FREE addon : ND hugemenace ,why you don't talk about it ? should be usefull for you community , you should talk about it
What i understand is Hard ops is good only if you have Box cutter installed else you have to manage doing boolian the traditional way correct me if Iam wrong Thanks Jesus saves

bro started to write an autobiography
Word on the street...bro already finished writing the autobiography. It's already published. No. 1 best seller.
ok
I can't imagine doing this stuff without box cutter. You'd pretty much have to have like 12 different boolean cutters.
what ever I watch of your tutorials,,,they are all perfect . Gratitude for your time and effort.
I didn't know about the quick apply with the f key. Thanks man. I didn't think I was going to learn anything new but you proved me wrong. :)
Awesoem upload Josh. Discovering these tips has been a game changer to my work speed.
I bought the combo, but still don't know how to use Hard Ops.

Watch mx2 (masterxeon) on youtube he is the guy you wanna watch to learn these tools in depth

ok, i admin i didn't care about these plugins (new to 3D modelling) but i can absolutely see the value these tools provide now
what do you think about grid modeler ? it looks pretty fast and efficient but did not buy it for the moment
I bought them and they help so much im still a beginner in hard surface modeling but they help sooooo much 👍

I gave up on blender boolean. At random it produced non manifold geometry and did it often enough to cause significant rework. I don't care how it renders, but I must have manifold geometry. Do box cutter and hardops use the flaky boolean modifiers?
curious to know what you think of fluent as a hops and bc person. is it as good or easier or not really worth it?
"F to apply a modifier." I've been using Ever Scroll for years and had no idea about this - thank you! Is that hotkey even documented? Now it is 🙂
Can I use these addons for models intended to port to unreal engine? I presume it should work if I apply the booleans?
Great presentation buddy.
Good Job!
Blender Bros are expanding what Blender can do. These tutorials have been gamechanging.
Great thanks... Ps what do you think to grid modeller?

When you cut the cutter with an ngon non cyclic you drew a diagonal thin line but how did you adjust the thickness of that line ?
Never mind figured it out you used T for solidify to adjust thickness right?
nice videos!. BTW, do you know why are not new updates with HardOps and Boxcutter addons? ty
there is regular updates. Mine is longer up to date, speaking of... lol
link to the mini course "terminal" does not work
The video i didnt know i needed!
I used to use Fusion360 mainly for the Boolean type workflow, but no need now . Its much faster in the end to use Ho/Bc and not have to deal with some retopo problems.
Now is clear. Big thnks!
You do great work!
I downloaded them and like them they make your work fast.

It's really difficult to go back to vanilla Blender, after using hard ops and box cutter. So awesome addons.
