I was once told by a guy who did a sports degree that the definition of a sport was to meet 3 things. 1. It has to be competed by more than one person (i.e. solitaire doesn't count). 2. There has to be a target (such as first to something or first past the line) and 3. There has to be a physicality involved (therefore chess or monopoly for example wouldn't count, as you could play equally as well if someone moved the piece for you, but alternatively darts/pool/snooker, for example, would count as you couldn't ask someone to play a shot or throw a dart for you).

I like darts, I watch a fair amount of darts(though on mute), I believe it is a sport, but it's becoming a pretty overrated sport. It really doesn't involve that much skill and thought compared to other sports.
Snooker is probably the most lonely and enduring sport fought in predominantly silent arenas ticking over every missed pot. Darts is also skill based but you’re laid bare in front of an arena of drunken loud fans that could go either way in regard to atmosphere. It may not be football or rugby but you wouldn’t catch many people up on that stage able to hack the pressure they go through.
Walking is a sport in the Olympics, as is pistol shooting, Archery, ski jumping, at a pro tour event you can be on your feet from 10am until 6pm. try to practice 6 hours and try doint it 7 days a week
As a guy well in his 60s now , who has played darts from way back in the 70s , darts is a game not a Sport although most young darters because they are lazy would like to make it into a Sport , they want it made into wait for it ---> An Olympic Sport aye Actually as you guys know Re-darts Its a game brought on from the pubs up and down the length of the UK for the working class class . though its went more so middle classes today also . Certainly not as busy being played in bars all over UK nowadays to what it was like in 70s and 80s i recall , and even today young ones need a calculator ive often seen being used to calculate their scores ..Much prefer top of head calculate from chalk board and something i learnt as i knew i had to learn calculate quickly for ways to go for Check outs and did learn and now my head is a calculator on its own and i was not so good at school but learnt much more through grit and determination to learn ..today Luke Littler just different , as dont see many players who can handle mental side of game , some very good darters but mental side is half battle won if u can handle nerves ..Young guy does very well and with ability on top is why he is doing very well Shall he continue to do so remains to be seen ^ as he shall see his pals going out to enjoy themselfs , shall he wnt to keep on practicing and travelling for the darts all time ? Shall he be taken away by his friend/s for other things in life ? Sure his parents shall put it to him best stay with the darts with all moneys he is making , and rightly so he should still very young as yet and got many yrs ahead of him can make a mint of money and later when he feels need to pack in but he may be aiming to beat taylors record of title wins , tough to do , even more so today id reckon But my fav times was Rees , Wilson , Bristow them guys and others way back , but games came on a load since Hearn seen £s signs as its went since Global again a good thing and who knows where it shall end up darts huge the now with young guys like Littler , Humphries and number of other top young players from all over the globe hs turned it into a very big thing Darts today . As for bullseyes ive often hit 3 x times bullseyes inc other night inc 2x180s just before the going for some bulls eyes all in fun practice alone in room , and yes it is a bu-g-er done on your own in the room Although i did hit 4 x times 180s on one evening in a tournament , but it is something id never go for with say 150 left really the 3 x bullseyes ..But if Luke Littler or Gary Anderson checked out 3 x bullseyes for the 150 check out you would not hear the end of it . By way i have played Jocky Wilson for £s way back when i was 17 yrs of age , before i even knew who he was before or seen on tv only just months after i seen Jocky on tv ..then later shared oche with him , both us alone and some fun was had re banter in Scotland , and did Jocky keek into an empty lounge bar except for myself at the oche when i was practicing and he then came in when told ye no probs in you come , to join for a time was all good fun and banter between us both with just bar lady in lounge bar at time me and Jocky . But ye Darts to me is just a game , a game i enjoy . But would not surprise me with way things are going if it is not brought into the Olympics
@CaptainMarvel84 look up the definition of sport. An activity involving physical exertion and skill. Aint no 60 year old sportsman beating a 21 year old sportsman at any sport, without getting extremely lucky
Just because you can play darts when you're overweight doesn't mean it isn't a sport. It's a sport you can still play at the highest level when your overweight so athleticism doesn't come into it. So if football is played in local parks by many overweight people, does that mean it isn't a sport. Many amateur Saturday and Sunday league teams have fat people playing, but it's still a sport
90% are overweight or obese Humphries, MVG, Price, Heta, Asp, Noppert, Dimitri, Schindler, De Decker, Van Veen, Pikachu, Ratajski, Woodhouse. That's 13 of the top 32 that are in good shape or at least not overweight. I left Cross out because he fluctuates a bit. Clayton has a bit of a belly but definitely not massive. Same with littler. If you include them it's exactly 50% of the top 32 are in "good/decent" shape. It's such a lazy argument to say it's a fat man's sport. Essentially "tell me you've never watched darts without saying it" The days of everyone being like Andy Fordham are over. Could say the same about footballers 30 years ago.
although true your numbers dont account for the thousands of players that are not in front of the camera which I am sure makes a difference. Still probably not as high as 90% but I'd bet closer to 80 than 50
@MartiEverton I'm stating the top of the game. We can go deeper down the field if you like. Doets, Veenstra, De Graaf, Meickle, Nijman, Hempel, Barry, O Connor, Mansell, Whitlock, Scutt, Souter, Sedlacek, Zonneveld, Razma. There's another 16 of the next 35 or so. My point is you're not going to dominate or even be successful in this sport/game/whatever you want to call it, if you're an overweight drunk. You know who's been falling down the rankings? King, Barney, Smith, Evans, Wright, Wade, DVD, Clemens, Mensur, Jose..... all the big lads. Even the kines of Josh Rock have plateaued since he's piled on the weight, same with Cam Menzies, Rydz, Dolan, Scott Williams, Gurney, Dobey etc. Again, it's really not like that anymore..... and if you want me to account for every single person that's picked up a dart, we can go the same with any sport. Not all Sunday league footballers are fit and healthy. Not all club golfers look like Brooks or Bryson etc etc.
@ChrisTravelss not all other sports with players at the top are being called out on their weight which creates a poor perception. the others you have mentioned have also been in front of the cameras and therefore more conscious. most of those you mentioned have at some point been overweight and still are if you apply the dumb science behind it. i believe its a sport anyway even if theyre all the size of andy fordham. the point made was basically many dont look at it as a sport because of the beer/smoking fat guy perception which still exists. a perception that most likely wont change unless the majority look like humphries or price unfortubately. end of the day its a sport for me, the mental toughness and actually standing on your feet for hours is quite demanding not to mention the entertainment and they perform with the crowd shouting unlike tennis/snooker.
@CaptainMarvel84 calm down sweetcheeks, try and understand a reply before piping up. he hasnt destroyed any point because the 'perception' still exists hence why those with the perception dont consider it a sport. 90% from simon is a tongue in cheek, exaggerated reply to get a giggle/response.
Turned into a 3 against 1 for this interview and while you can ask certain questions, I think darts is in a place where there are enough positives to focus on and shine a light on the hard work which goes in. Also, I would consider sport to be more than just athleticism, mental strength has to be more important in a world where anyone can hit the gym for 20+ hours per week. If you aren't there mentally, you won't win shit and that goes for all sports in the modern day.
Of course it’s a sport, it doesn’t need its players to be athletic but it requires great skill and also you need be very very strong mentally. It’s a SPORT, love how people are still looking down their noses at darts after all these years, their snobs. Darts is better to watch than the football to slot off people and it’s growing. 🎯🎯🎯👌
The you talk about leaving 132 and going bull, bull, double 16 to rub it in just shows you're new to watching darts. That's the way to go as if you miss the first bull in the 25 then you get treble 19, bull
The athleticism is in the fine motor movements involved in accurately aiming when throwing darts. It's more a sport (to me) than figure skating and gymnastics. Respond to my comment to hear my argument
i sense someone who can cook? try washing a cooking pot after making lasagna ..roast chicken and scrambled egg... they have to be cleaned perfect mind you...then load the same 3 pots up.... cook again .... clean again....wait for a friend to clean there pots better than you ... then clean again and again and again all the while they have to be perfect .... if you can do 9 pots perfectly clean in under 3 minutes and then do another hour of nearly clean pots ...but close to perfect ..without losing a gram and losing your mind because your friend cleans pots better than you..ill agree.....

@@rossrobson91 You cant really compare team and individual sports in this respect. Though I do think a penalty shootout puts a lot more pressure on than a darts critical moment.
Darts can help boost the economy n stop publicans from going out of business....Should be an olympic sport
I love darts....
But its a pub game like snooker pool simple as that
Indoor sports exist
It's a sport and that's a fact. What you think is an opinion
If archery is an Olympic sport why isn't darts?
I dont really care whether people call it a sport or not who actually cares. But i mean by this logic surely things like archery, curling or shooting arent sports either
Real archery took big men to use well, that’s why the English and Welsh longbowmen were the best in the world and also the best darts players in the world.
Ronnie O'Sullivan won the UK championship at 17, Michael Owen playing for England at a young age, world on his shoulder, there are other comparisons too.
Why talk about darts when they don’t know what they’re talking about. What they saying is insulting Littler achievements . Darts has more strength in depth than ever. Bristow at 22 was still 5 years older. Let’s just enjoy the brilliance of Luke and others coming through, instead of comparing pointlessly different eras.
The argument is very simple. Darts is a sport, BUT it's not an athletic sport. Why can't people recognise the two ffs.
Because some people are thick and dumb unfortunately, they think sport is purely about how fat or thin somebody is, it’s pathetic.
Correct...If clay pigeon shooting (aim and pull trigger) is officially an Olympic sport..so is darts
The snobbery on display is about as much as the disdain for darts. So they don’t all look like Michael Phelps? So what! Fat shaming these guys is uncool. It’s high skill with huge pressure, mental toughness and acuity, and massive entertainment.
Golf has a lot of what Simon would call obese people, not all snooker players are Athletes, there’s a lot of sports that aren’t full of Athletic people. Shame (again) on these ridiculous presenters. Dants was right to stand up for the people’s game and those that entertain the people.
It’s not an athletic game, but it’s a sport. Archery is a sport, snooker is a sport.
Am I the only person who is pissed off with Keown constantly checking his phone?!
Darts is as much of a sport as Golf, Bowls and Curling. Something people train to get better at and challenge each other in.
If snooker and chess are games. So is darts...And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.. Calling it a game should not be deemed derogatory...
It might not be a considered a sport by some people but they cover more ground in a match than Matt Le Tissier ever did.
Walking is a sport in the Olympics, as is pistol shooting, Archery, ski jumping, at a pro tour event you can be on your feet from 10am until 6pm. try to practice 6 hours and try doint it 7 days a week
Luke littler to sign for Manchester United in January transfer market 180❤
Darts on the radio isnt far away from snooker on the radio .pmsl
I'd rather listen to mime on the radio
These people who say it not athletic let them try to throw darts for an hour
It is a sport, lot's of back, arm, shoulder injuries etc. No different to Golf, snooker etc
Lmao
Rugby sport footy sport , tennis sport. Snooker ...no darts no... activity, pastime
Darts, like snooker, is a precision sport. I don’t buy the argument that sport requires athleticism.
Sir Lordship Jordanite = Top LAD Proper Clobber 💯 Facts
As a guy well in his 60s now , who has played darts from way back in the 70s , darts is a game not a Sport
although most young darters because they are lazy would like to make it into a Sport , they want it made into
wait for it ---> An Olympic Sport aye
Actually as you guys know Re-darts Its a game brought on from the pubs up and down the length of the UK
for the working class class . though its went more so middle classes today also . Certainly not as busy being played in bars all over UK nowadays to what it was like in 70s and 80s i recall , and even today young ones need a calculator ive often seen being used to calculate their scores ..Much prefer top of head calculate from chalk board and something i learnt as i knew i had to learn calculate quickly for ways to go for Check outs and did learn and now my head is a calculator on its own
and i was not so good at school but learnt much more through grit and determination to learn ..today Luke Littler
just different , as dont see many players who can handle mental side of game , some very good darters but mental side is half battle won if u can handle nerves ..Young guy does very well and with ability on top is why he is doing very well
Shall he continue to do so remains to be seen ^ as he shall see his pals going out to enjoy themselfs , shall he wnt to keep on practicing and travelling for the darts all time ? Shall he be taken away by his friend/s for other things in life ?
Sure his parents shall put it to him best stay with the darts with all moneys he is making , and rightly so he should
still very young as yet and got many yrs ahead of him can make a mint of money and later when he feels need to pack in
but he may be aiming to beat taylors record of title wins , tough to do , even more so today id reckon
But my fav times was Rees , Wilson , Bristow them guys and others way back , but games came on a load since
Hearn seen £s signs as its went since Global again a good thing and who knows where it shall end up darts
huge the now with young guys like Littler , Humphries and number of other top young players from all over the globe
hs turned it into a very big thing Darts today .
As for bullseyes ive often hit 3 x times bullseyes inc other night inc 2x180s just before the going for some bulls eyes all in fun practice alone in room , and yes it is a bu-g-er done on your own in the room
Although i did hit 4 x times 180s on one evening in a tournament , but it is something id never go for with say
150 left really the 3 x bullseyes ..But if Luke Littler or Gary Anderson checked out 3 x bullseyes for the 150 check out
you would not hear the end of it .
By way i have played Jocky Wilson for £s way back when i was 17 yrs of age , before i even knew who he was before
or seen on tv only just months after i seen Jocky on tv ..then later shared oche with him , both us alone and some fun was had re banter in Scotland , and did Jocky keek into an empty lounge bar except for myself at the oche when i was practicing
and he then came in when told ye no probs in you come , to join for a time was all good fun and banter between us both
with just bar lady in lounge bar at time me and Jocky .
But ye Darts to me is just a game , a game i enjoy . But would not surprise me with way things are going if it is not brought into the Olympics
If darts is not a sport then neither is shooting or archery, yet they are in the Olympics
He’s been practicing for over 15 years, hardly a phenomenon. Basically puts the pub hobby into perspective
Darts is a game. You can play it without changing your footwear.
These people seem to forget that Darts is watched world wide not just in UK.
Darts is global..40 nations competed in the 2024 world cup of darts,
Martin showing he knows very little about darts thinking two bulls is a special way to go for 132.
Its a game not sport. Great to see how the brand has grown and the player's are in the spotlight but a game it is.
Is archery a sport,is bowling,is pool,is clay pigeon, is snooker, i think they are,and i think darts fell into this category.
My dad told me when I was a kid. Anything that a 60 year old can beat a 21 year old at isn't a sport
If it’s not a sport why’s talk sport talking about it 🤷🏻♂️
"you can only have one world champion at a time" WDF seething
90% are overweight or obese
Humphries, MVG, Price, Heta, Asp, Noppert, Dimitri, Schindler, De Decker, Van Veen, Pikachu, Ratajski, Woodhouse.
Essentially "tell me you've never watched darts without saying it"
The days of everyone being like Andy Fordham are over.
Mvg shouldn’t be on that list 😂
Football is the 'beautiful game' not the 'beautiful sport'
If it’s not a sport, why is it shown on Sky Sports?
Anything you play inside a pub isn’t a sport .
Simon pulling percentages out of his arse again.....
Lets be honest, its on the worlds then it goes under the radar till next year.
Whys it not a sport because of the physical demands theres none in bowls or archery but they are sports
Last few years football has came a long second fiddle to darts over the Christmas period. Darts is on the up at some speed.
Jim White hardly let's anyone finish a sentence.
No one will ever beat phill Taylor world darts record!!!
No but seriously what is Keown doing? Like what's he writing?
The whole "paywall" thing is nonsense ; if you like sport you've got Sky or Now or whatever ; if you don't you're not going to watch it anyway.
The athleticism is in the fine motor movements involved in accurately aiming when throwing darts. It's more a sport (to me) than figure skating and gymnastics. Respond to my comment to hear my argument
washing cooking pots is more physical than chucking darts....a mere board game to me
i sense someone who can cook? try washing a cooking pot after making lasagna ..roast chicken and scrambled egg... they have to be cleaned perfect mind you...then load the same 3 pots up.... cook again .... clean again....wait for a friend to clean there pots better than you ... then clean again and again and again all the while they have to be perfect .... if you can do 9 pots perfectly clean in under 3 minutes and then do another hour of nearly clean pots ...but close to perfect ..without losing a gram and losing your mind because your friend cleans pots better than you..ill agree.....
@@EmmyG7 you don’t paid 500k for one event doing that though.
Darts like snooker or pool is simply a game not a sport.
Martin Keown out of step with the conversation as usual - they should rename White & Jordan “talking bollox with Keown”
Simon reminds me of a couple of mates of mine that know really successful people and are always borrowing glory from them by telling people about the amazing things these successful friends are doing.
Nobody cares about your rich mates, Simon. And also, nobody is buying the idea that somebody spent £300m on a minority stake in a company for darts. You’re talking nonsense.
No wonder this guy failed in business. If he told me it was cold outside I wouldn’t believe him until I got sick.
Forever in Eddie’s shadow.
Simon is out of touch, it’s not just about people watching it, the uplift in people playing it aswell has gone boom the last 2/3 year
Who cares if its a sport or not, it isn't really, but its a great game, best thing over the Christmas
Littler will be better than Taylor
He’s got a 10 year head start
It literally falls under the definition of sport
Why do people think Simon is the voice of the people!
I think darts is the most entertaining sport out there dont ever compare tennis to darts especially nowadays no nadal no murray no federer djokovic be gone soon its literally up there with football now and its accessible to the masses
They said the young uns were coming in snooker 10 years ago and its still same old faces winning most tournaments .
Its not a sport if you spend more calories celebrating than you do doing the thing..
