Of course Russian elections are rigged, but you don't have to look to North Korea as the standard. Try Britain. Is the BBC unbiased? No, of course not. Sure, it's not as bad as RT, but it's biased. What about the Murdoch press. They're worse than RT and the are extremely popular and influential in the UK. Look what happens when an anti-establishment figure comes close to getting power in the UK. The establishment dealt with him quite nicely. How about the Westminster first past the post system? The parliament that results from that doesn't represent the will of the people. It represents the establishment parties. Then you have the House of Lords. How about the influence of the establishment educational institutions in the UK. The history of corrupt police. And I could go on, and usually do!

For me as a guy who is interested in politics, i can say that putin wants to make politics gray blackening democracy and hailing mild fascist authoritarianism.
Comparing US and russian elections it's completely obvious how tramp played his role in this putin's process, those are almost the same but completely different situations:
Blue - "US democrats" (good), "united russia" (bad, putin's party)
Red - "US republicans" (bad), "KPRF" (more or less ok, the main accessible opposition party)
Blue win - the USA (fair), Russia (fraud)
US Red - conspiracies and lies about elections.
RU Red - truth about actual stolen elections.
Frauds - US (no solid proofs), Russia (hundreds of clips of actual and clearly visible frauds)

Your comment merely shows how extraordinarily privileged you are, the fact that you have the audacity to even compare this to an authoritarian state like Russia where political rivals are killed and jailed, where there is no free press and only state sanctioned opposition is allowed on top of rigged elections is kinda cringe.

That is quite an interesting topic!
I, myself, am from Russia and also i participated in elections as a "watcher". The watcher's job is to make sure that elections pass at his polling station without any problems. Also, watchers are choosed from many different parties to exlude "teamwork". After the end of elections we were handed a document with a numbers of all chosen candidates. The strongest party was CPRF (Communist party of Russian Federation) with 148 votes against 111 votes for UR (United Russia, the party of Vladimir Putin). (Dont worry, this information isn't classified at all, I won't be sent to gulag 😆). But the next day, when all the votes were counted, it appeared that the UR won, having 42% of votes against 17% of CPRF. Well, can't say I was surprised.

The minimum requirement for democracy of ANY type is political choice. Yet we in the UK find ourselves
with the 'choice' between one neoliberal lead main party or another neoliberal lead main party or another neoliberal lead main party.
Thus the public is conditioned to vote against the very slightest difference and not FOR what they want.
The only way WE can obtain democracy in the UK is through proportional representation.

When there's coverage of elections abroad for not being "free and fair", it usually implies that the ones at home are "free and fair". In the UK, yes, most can technically stand for office, but unless you are content to be Count Binface you need serious political and financial connections to campaign at the level you'd need to even be competitive. Similar goes for the ability to vote; not everyone can even actually vote, such as prisoners. But even for the vast majority of adults that can technically vote, there still exist socioeconomic barriers, or just out right disenfranchisement caused by the two-party system. I think to presume a country has "free and fair" elections because of legal technicalities, without exploring the deeper implications, is extremely ignorant.
