- Interviewing someone for the first time in my life, in a language that is not my native, was really scary! But I hope you are going to enjoy this video. In it, I talked to Emma @Pronunciationwithemma , who teaches Standard British English pronunciation. She's got a great channel that I have used and recommended multiple times to my pronunciation students. So, I thought, wouldn't it be great to talk to her about what and how she does as a teacher and try to make her answer a few questions that I have thought about myself, some of them easy and some of them not.

В моем опыте работы с произношением основные проблемы не со звуками как таковыми, а с ритмом и интонациями. Они совершенно разные в разных языках и даже если все звуки идеальны, то ритм остается из родного языка. Жаль, что не затронули эту тему. Очень интересно ваше мнение😊

14:52 I am a Brazilian living in France and I work as an English teacher. I lost an English teaching opportunity because they told me I have a Brazilian accent and they are looking for people who have native English speakers' accent! :( So I have no choice: I gotta sound British even though I am a Brazilian. This is a quite controversial topic, indeed. Sometimes I feel so weird imitating an accent which is not mine! But it seems I have to if I wanna have a chance as an English teacher here. Thanks for the video, you girls are amazing professionals!

I don’t think knowing the positions of the tongue and looking at the native speaker’s mouth when they make the sound is useful or anyway necessary. Blind people learn their own native language with the native pronunciation and accent without being able to see people’s mouths!
Learning something as the first language while you're a kid and learning a foreign language as an adult are different processes and unfold differently. Adults use a lot more analytical skills, they rely a lot more on metaknowledge (knowledge about the language) and explicit description and explanation. That's why most adult learners of a foreign language need to study and drill grammar rules while young learners of a first language don't (apart from the rules of spelling, punctuatio, etc which are of course not natural to any language but a social construct). So, adult learners do benefit a lot from explicit knowledge about the pronunciation of a foreign language as well. However, I agree that it is not absolutely necessary. Depending on the innate imitation skills an adult possesses, they may be able to learn pronunciation without getting into the technical peculiarities.
@@innainenglishit probably also depends on the type of learner you are. I learn languages by sheer immersion like a sponge, then if I want to know the theory I can study it later but to me it’s a further addition as I first absorb the language in the form of meaningful sounds, no logic.
