Have a dobro hound dog, other three are just as sweet sounding. This guy has just shown it’s not an expensive guitar that makes you better but your practice and skills. Great review
Coyote red skies is my name it's demonstration was pretty cool to listen to the different sounds of these resonator over just for fun onstage as well as I appreciate your sharing the sound of these guitars sunhouse is a good example of a blues resonating all steel guitar 🎸 thank you for sharing
It is SO VERY RARE to come across a gear video where the demo dude can actually play. I was pleasantly surprised, as Joel is just ripping. Thanks for sharing this video.
This a good comparative review. I first bought a Luna;it was very well built, but was designed mostly for amplification. So, I exchanged it for the "acoustic only" Gretsch "Honey-Dipper." That did the trick for me. I build acoustics, electrics, do repair and custom set-ups to thousandths of an inch. My other acoustic is a vintage Westerly Guild D 40. That is my second of that model. My first was a 3 digit serial numbered from Brooklyn, the truly first Guild luthierie shop before Newark. I learned to build while in law school and I sold that extra-vintage D 40 to buy the material for a full-on custom acoustic. Just the rosewood had been dried over 60 years. It was a spectacular OM size guitar, loaded with pearl and abalone, and my favorite fretboard wood, ebony. Sold for tuition for my daughter, but no bitterness ; she graduated cum laude as a certified Special Needs teacher, later got her Master's in same, and is now the Special Needs curriculum director for a whole nearby district, having also served as a principal for a special needs school.
Gretsch are making some amazing sounding resonators for the price point. I bought. One a couple of years ago and it plays and sounds better than most resonators twice the price. One of my favourite guitars.
Hey captain. Jus wanted to let you know thats some serious sliding techniques your using.. honestly thats probably some of the best blues slide I've heard in a looooooonnngggg time!!
Very nicely played Sir and thank you for staying away from the usual cliched pieces people usually play when they pick up a resonator! For me the Gold Tone stood out a mile---the loudest and fullest sounding. Then I checked out the prices and can see why. Of the others I thought the Alligator had a very decent sound.
Great demo... really got a sense for the different characteristics of each instrument, as well as how you naturally reacted to each of them and how they sounded, played, etc. Very nice job. THANK YOU! 🤙🏼🎶😎
Really? I felt it nipping my eardrums. I did not like the sound of it at all. The bobtail however was another story altogether. Sounded 100× better to me. I wonder what you heard that I couldn't. This is why I love guitars though. People hear completely other things from one another.
I do as well! I actually like the "Boxcar" model that Gretsch makes a little more than the one in this video, which sounds a tad thin to me probably due to the use of the biscuit cone rather than the spider in the "Boxcar", but it's all about personal preference. Both I think sound a little better and are better constructed than the Epiphone-made Dobro "Hound Dog", which costs more only due to the brand name I think. Still a good reso guitar though!
Was expecting the run of the mill, punt your guitars vid, but man was I wrong, thanks you've made me fall in love pall over again with Dobro's again. Mine is now coming of the rack. 5*
Great little listen. Looking for my first reso, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be one of these two Gretch models. Trying to listen with my eyes closed, but it’s not easy. Very nice playing, too, sir!
Nice comparison and great playing! I bought a Gretsch Alligator about 18 months ago and I am very happy with it. I think the value for money and build quality outweighed others I tried, such as the Dobro. That could be just luck. It has a warmer tone than the recording would suggest 😃. Thanks for the vid!
Got a old finder drobro and it sounds so nice like it was new but I had it for a long time now keep up the good fight for the slide guitar love the vids guy
Great demo of spider vs. biscuit. I'm a blues player but I'm leaning toward the spider bridge. However, I think Joel could hook a broomstick to a fry pan, string it up and make it sound good. Does anyone know what tuning he uses?
@@mikec3777 ah ok, I kinda want bigger strings for slide because the 12s are too light but I like how easy it is to play regularly in standerd tune, I’ll probably just give the 13s a shot
I keep coming back here just listen to the tune at 2:13 anyone know what the name of it is, the style and any recommendations where I might here more like it on resonator?
If this guy teaches guitar lessons, sign me up. It's cool how different everyone's opinion of "the best sounding guitar" is. In order I would vote 2, 1, 4, 3
If I'm not mistaken, the still shot of the guitar while the Epiphone was being played was actually a National, with its signature 3 holes. Still very enjoyable.
Just wanted to say that I watched this vid soo many times and finally made a decision to get the G9221, not in small part to the amazing playing on it 🙏🏽 So please, what was the tuning (and based on which sings, guitarists). I hope that after years of woodshedding I can be even 1/10th of how good you are 🙏🏽
I'm torn between the Hound Dog and the Bobtail, the Bobtail has that unmistakable Delta Blues sound, but the extra warmth of the Hound Dog pulls me into it as well
I have the Dobro Houndog and it sounds exactly like it does on this video. You can't really go wrong with one. Makes even my slide guitar sound amazing!
Killer playing and demo my friend. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Firstly, can you say in your heart of hearts that you'd be able to discern the difference between a gold tone beard and a higher end beard if you were to hear each blindfolded? And even if you would be able to tell the difference [you may have heard both enough times to know], is this difference characterised by an objective inferiority/superiority in sound quality? Or let's say if you had never heard any Beard guitars before and were played samples of each, do you think you'd know which one was triple the price of the other? I'm just curious, cos I've been watching some blindfold challenge vids on the Andertons youtube channel lately and it's got me re-evaluating everything! When I first heard the beard odyssey demos for example, I felt certain that I was hearing a ''better'' more expensive sounding tone. And maybe I was right. But if I'm honest with myself I think a lot of it comes down to expectation too. And I personally don't think I'd be able to reliably guess correctly which guitar was 3k and which was 1k based purely off my ears. But perhaps that attests to my crap ears! Who knows, food for thought. Secondly- which of the four are your favourites? I'm torn between the gold tone and the steel bobtail.
There are obvious differences between these models and Nationals. This video is actually a follow up to a National Resonphonic Guitars overview, and knowing that those instruments aren't in everyone's budget, we wanted to show what else was available. The Nationals have their own, wonderful thing going on, and it's difficult to describe without playing one, but these instruments surprised everyone. Don't discount them because they don't say National on the headstock! - Joel
I have a gold tone pbs in worn mahogany and it's a fantastic instrument. It's my first reso that I've owned but I have played many. For the price they are hard to beat
@@johnnygoodwill407 Since posting this comment I've bought a Dobrato reso which is also mahogany. Gorgeous thick warm mid rangey tone. It also comes with a trem bar/b bender! Worth checking out :)
Gretsch Honey Dipper for me. Have one on order. Have had National resophonic and Republic resonators before. National was amazing, but I find the Honey Dippers sounding better than Republics. For the price, I think the Gretsch will do the job. The Nationals are just too pricy these days.
Guitars aside, this guys killing it over 90 percent of UA-cam blues guitar players out there
2:20 Gold tone Paul Beard signature
4:05 Epiphone Hound Dog
6:14 Gretsch 9240 (Wood Body)

Over £1000!! Hardly hardly on a budget!! 😱😱😱

The gold tone was my favorite, then the Gretch bobtail was a close second, great playing btw

I prefer the more twangy tone of the metal body Gretsch. BTW, great playing.
