Bonsaify | Kishu Juniper Air Layering: Win Some, Lose Some
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Eric revisits an air layer project he began in May 2022. He predicts that not all of his attempts will be successful, and begins by checking to see if the wire has girdled the growth on the layers enough that they begin to issue roots.
00:00:38 Attempt 1 is a no.
00:00:55 Attempt 2 is a small success with roots; it has potential!
00:01:58 Third time's the charm! Attempt 3 has a big mass of foliage and plenty of roots.
00:03:04 Close-up of success. Eric saws it off to plant as a separate tree. He'll put it in the greenhouse to minimize stress.
00:03:58 Attempts 4 and 5 are definitely no's.
00:04:29 This has been an interesting experiment but for these last two attempts, it's probably not worth trying again. Attempt 2 on the other hand, is worth re-wrapping and giving more time to root.
00:05:26 Closer examination of the new roots from Attempt 3.
00:06:46 Planting Attempt 3 into a small container, as it seems likely it will be a smaller tree, shohin perhaps.
00:07:29 Eric offers advice on what to do it you don't have access to a greenhouse.
00:08:09 Summary of decisions on what to do with the original tree.
How have your attempts at air layering a Kishu Juniper gone? Let us know in the comments below! As always, thanks for watching! Please subscribe; give this video a thumbs-up; and tell all your bonsai friends about our channel.
Thanks fir sharing.
Really interesting experiment. Great insight as to what is happening - and when. I love this kind of knowledge!!
I’m surprised after a year it still didn’t produce roots. I have a few parent junipers and get enough roots to chop in about 3 months
Which makes a nicer bonsai, kishu,or itoigawa ? What should i go after?? Great vid. Love junipers. Thankyou😊
Both are great. Kishu is easier to find right now at least in the US- we sell them on Bonsaify.com. As for Itoigawa - some people prefer it, and it's the only thing they graft onto trees in Japan (basically).
Hi eric this is paul james tan... Nice video❤❤❤
Hi James! Welcome to the channel. Hope you and your family are doing well!
An old man chopped a California juniper in half clearing out his yard. Asked me if I wanted it. Can I stick it in rocks n soil and water it everyday? Or is this a waste of time etc 🙏🏻🙏🏻🌳
Hmm. If there are no roots or root tissue at all it's unlikely - but give it a try. Keeping it under mist in a shaded location can help with rooting.
This method is safer but it takes considerably more time. Taking the ring out works best I think.
It's funny, I thought so also, but every time I try it the layer just dies on me rather than rooting. I'll try again.
@@Bonsaify I just did this year. There was visible roots after 8 weeks. I put a pot for roots grow until next year. I think you should mind not disturbing much the tissue under the bark while taking the ring out.
👍👌🙂
Do you think this method will work on Japanese maples
Yes they do well, no girdle required.
Do need to take a ring off.
Absolutely.

@@martifish cool because I really struggle with Japanese maple air layering I had 1 success out of 5 and the successful 1 was a thin branch
Heat plays a major role. So if you're in a colder area, that may be the reason.
