    This video was released at a good time for me. My young juniper is giving me a great amount of concern, as it is turning a gray/green color. I had not repotted before and my wife suggested that I move it to a larger pot and add fresh soil. I’ve done that and I’m going to try a bit of fertilizer this week. I would hate to see it die off. It was a Christmas gift and it’s drawn me into bonsai. I’ll check your other videos to get more info about what to do.
    Thank you for posting, very informative and you present well.

    Aussie Dave here Josh, your video just helped me understand my juniper, I live in Brisbane, and 2 weeks ago i repotted my juniper and completely washed all old soil out and root prune severely, the tips started to brown 🤔🤨. But now 99 % of the foliage is green up. 😆. So your video gave me hope, thank you...🌲👍

    My juniper started getting brown on the lowest section since Nov 2023. Now the middle section is turning brown too. Top is still green.
    What should I do to save the tree?

    Bonsai-En, I made a beginner mistake and bought a Juniper from Nursery stock, come to find out when I repotted (pot slip) it because the original pot did not have drainage. There were two Junipers entangled, so I didn't mess with the roots since we are entering fall, when I moved them to a 6 inch training pot, they took off now I have two trees in one pot each growing in its own direction. Is there anyway to make these two wrap or do I just separate them next early spring?

    What about the scratch test on the lower trunk ?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  5 місяців тому

      You can do it on the lower trunk and that will be an indicator of the trees total strength and health. if you do it on individual branches that can be an indicator of that particular branches health so you can pin point issues if need be. the only reason i did it where i did in the video is because it was at the top of the tree and easy to film. The only issue you might run into with doing the test lower down on the tree is if it is an older tree the bark might be really thick at the base which makes it difficult.

    Thank you so much for this video. I bought my first bonsai earlier this spring before really understanding what it would take to keep up with it. I had started to notice a lot of browning on the inside of the tree about a month or so after I got it and started really trying to troubleshoot what was going on. Your videos have really helped me take the right steps towards really taking care of the tree as well as taking bonsai more seriously, and this video has reassured me that it is not dying. Again, thank you!!

    What if it’s still a pale green but crispy. I just got two about a month ago and I feel like I underestimated how much water the soil was holding. I feel like even with the two times a week and misting, it is dying or dead now because of lack of water. I now have them in a tray where they can bottom drink. Really hoping they aren’t goners. 😢

    Hey josh, I have a kind of a new tree I bought in a nursery and started to train it as a bonsai, I was arrogant and quickly repotted it into a bonsai pot although I wanted it’s trunk and nebari well developed, now I’m considering what to do whit it next, should I put it back in the ground? And if so, hoe much time after I last pruned it? And if not, what should I do? (Repotted in a bonsai pot and trained for 3 months)

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  2 роки тому

      i would leave it in the bonsai pot for now as you don't want to keep disturbing the roots too much, let it settle for a bit, next season you can slip pot it into a growing pot and keep it growing.

    Hi Josh. I have a same kind of Juniper but it has stopped growing. There no Browning or dead branches. We are in middle of Summer in my country.
    I fertilizer it regularly with NON 10-10-10 and Auxin and Cytokinin once a month and it's under full sun here at temperature about 32 Celcius.
    What should I do to make it grow ?
    Thanks Josh

    Great video, just wondering for the scratch test - For established, older branches - my juniper shows a whiter inner bark. Whereas some more juvenile branches are greener. Although at the trunk of my older tree, some time it does scratch as green as well. Thoughts?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  2 роки тому

      The branches showing more white maybe be weak, do they have less foliage on them then the parts that are showing greener? You may also see some difference between branches if there is an issue in the root system as junipers get nutrients and water through different roots, so if 1 part of your root system has air pockets or is getting root rot you may see parts of the tree get weaker while other parts being fed by different roots will thrive.

    Named my bird after the Juniper tree, 4 years later I have purchased a 2 year old Juniper bonsai when I randomly saw a Bonsai tree stand on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.
    I messed up already by putting it in the window due to storms. It has stiffened at the ends, in panic I am watching these and it is back outside. Branch is indeed dying. thankful for this vid!!

    Great video. Id like to see the progress of this tree as to the next step of wiring the secondary branches out and how they will look. I will ask though after the secondary branches are all mature are we trying to make tertiary branches also or sticking to just secondarys. I say that because it seems like theres not enough room to progress all of that work. Thanks

  • @Blaydrnnnr

    I would LOVE to see a really close up tutorial of you pruning the foliage on this tree. I have a few of these Junipers, and have had them a long time ( about 12 years ) and they have tolerated my mistakes, but they are growing like crazy this year, and I dont fully get how to trim the pads after massive growth spirts like the past couple months. I wired the branches ( again, really botched that up ) but have a huge amount of growth and as fall is coming, I thought I should be trimming back the growth to try to develop the pads batter, but I am completely lost when it comes to how to actually cut back the foliage properly....

      Sounds like you've taken some extra lessons from the school of hard knocks. What is good advice you'd give beginners? And what are the things you would do differently if you could start over knowing what you know now?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  Рік тому

      Every bonsai artist graduates from the school of hard knocks haha, if they say they didn't then they are lying! One thing I wish I understood from the start was timing is everything, the right timing for repotting, pruning, watering fertilising. Also understanding that there are 2 stages of Bonsai, development and refinement. These 2 stages have completely different goals and techniques but you can't do 1 without the other.

      Have you recently pruned the tree and cut through the needles? This can also cause the tips to turn brown. Another thing that can cause browning at the tips is spider mites. If the tips are dusty that could be sign, you can also get a white piece of paper and put it under a branch and shake the branch, if spider mite are present they will fall onto the paper. They are very small but if you look hard enough you will see them move around. You can also run your hand over the paper and you might see blood smear if they are there.
