- This is an excellent wrestling match pitting Gorgeous George and Woody Strode. Based out of Los Angeles, this syndicated program traveled around the country via Kinescopes in the early days of television. Our host, sports talk pioneer, Allin Slate introduces this week’s main event match. Here we get to see wrestling legend Gorgeous George in action with the full ring entrance. George is a pioneer of the flamboyant wrestler and for a while was one of the greatest draws in wrestling. His opponent is UCLA football great, actor, wrestler and humanitarian Woody Strode. Strode made a name for himself on the gridiron at UCLA and the CFL. He then followed with a great career on the mat as well as the Silver Screen. This is a very enjoyable match and a great chance to see a longer match featuring these two. Thanks to information from wrestling historian Yohe, the match itself was filmed at the Wilmington Bowl.

For those of you who came to see Gorgeous George, let me tell you something about Woody Strode... dude played football for the NCAA, PCPFL, NFL, and CFL, even won a Grey Cup. Before he started football professionally, he served the US Army in the Pacific theater of WWII. Then he came home and just kept playing football like nothing happened. He defeated the most famous wrestler of the television era on television. Then he did acting and was one of the first African Americans to be nominated for a Golden Globe. And he didn't stop there, fuck no, he was still acting into the 90's, been in over 60 movies and he did it until he died. The Rock wishes he was as bad ass as Woody Strode.
Jeez. What a life. They just don't build them like that anymore.
I honestly came to see Woody, love him in 'The Professionals'
I visit Woody's grave every year. He's buried just a few feet away from my Uncle's grave at Riverside National Military Cemetery, across from my Uncle's last posting, March AFB. Both men are heroes of mine.
Thank you to the OP of this gem from the 1950s golden era of television folderol. Woody Strode had an amazing life and career. I was lured to this while watching Woodrow in John Ford's 1961 classic "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." Again, thanks for the memories.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the match. Woody was an amazing person.
Gorgeous George is a wrestling legend. Thank u so much for posting.
An amazing piece of wrestling history. Thanks.
SouthSeaSavage Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Gorgeous George has more charisma than the entire WWE roster
For sure
this was cool thanks
The best of the best a genius, what an instrion
Woody Strode is a legend.
I'm pretty sure that Woody Strode had a regular role in the popular comedy series of the early 60's , "Mc'Hales Navy" which featured celebrated actor , Ernest Borgnine . Woody was cast as a crew member , as far as I remember
Nice clean pin by Strode who you know could have taken George in around 5 seconds flat. He was a real stud.
Before the Rock...THERE WAS WOODY STRODE!
👏 what year was this
In the south they did not allow matches like this one white vs black to wrestle not until Leroy Mcguirk did one in Texarkana
I'm really surprised that Strode won, and moreso that it was a "clean" win; no outside interference or something along those lines. Someone must have thought Strode had the potential to make money to arrange for the match (and the outcome).
'Beautiful gown...or robe...or whatever it is...'
Ass one who was a martial artist for many years, I am impressed with the display of various legitimate holds. Obviously it is a work, but impressive nevertheless!
“He’s like greased lightening this boy”. Wow. Man, it was tough being black back at this time.
He was like greased lighting i have no problem with that comment
@@DavidSmith-oh3re These idiots are always trying to make it about race, ignore him.
@@DavidSmith-oh3re so you have no problem with overt racism and calling black men BOY
GET OFF THE INTERNET NOW!
woody strode, ..by far had a much better life the gorgeous George . where woody, went to college, .played football, became a actor..and a much respected person.... George became a drunk, and died broke... George was a shooting star , that burned out...
my grandpa said he preached at our church
I would think it must be hard to be George where "everyone" hates you. He put wrestling over though. My Dad loved wrestling and my mom didn't but she only knew one wrestler and that was the Gorgeous one. Woody played his football in Canada for the Calgary Stampeders. Home of Stampede Wrestling.
Wow I've never seen this match.
There's not much fooyahe of George left out there.
Woddie was lean and chiseled.
cassius Clay said that he copied George and his act.
yes,I heard angelo dundee, talking about that,so funny, thats when Ali had an interview with him, saying "yes this is a good idea",everybody came to see him get beat up,but Ali said he laughed all the way to the bank.lol
It's too bad it's in black and white.
what date did this air
Today Hollywood has "Pretty Boy" Ricky Mandel.
George vocal here and gave some manly grunts and groans as he worked over Strode...
from 24:10 all you see is Woody's ass as the champ slowly softens him up... until lucky body slam airs out the Gorgeous gut last second for win
Seems george was over with both male and female fans but in different ways. Men were amused by him, but the women loved to hate him. Perhaps his use of bobby pins , effeminate clothes, perfume, prima donna act etc... satirized and mocked female predilections in a way that enraged them. A ring psychologist indeed.
all these ppl are dead now crazy
death, the shepherd of all mankind...
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
wow with how they talked about the colored wrestlers
Woody Strode was a trailblazer
