      I want to do a test from the top of "Tower of the America's" in San Antonio, trying to hit a repeater in Port O'conner Texas on the coast! I think the Tower of Americas observation deck is around 750' high and the POC repeater is on top of a water tower. That would be a cool video, almost 150 miles!

    • @truckinguy92
      @truckinguy92 7 місяців тому

      I agree. This test is very rudimentary and the creator has created too many variables. The radio should be set down in one place and then use a speaker mic to conduct the test. Especially on UHF, moving the radio a 1/2” in any direction can be the difference between being into the receiver on the other end or not.

  • @terryshrives8322

    I don’t get it. I sit in my house with my h8 and hit repeaters 15 miles away clear as a bell. I’m in the city. I have done 10 mile simplex test from in the house and sounded way way more clear then these did at 4 miles. I guess there are alot of factors. Anytime I have seen these test done in open flat ground, they do poorly. I just can’t imagine doing that shitty at 7 miles. I have alot of the same antennas as well, but I use my abbree whip the most because it covers gmrs 70cm and 2m with a 1:1 -1:7 swr acrossthose bands. I was going to tell you. With the swr meter that you have, to get a true accurate reading on power and swr, hold the radio straight up and down and the come in from behind it with your hand using your thumb, index finger and middle finger and grab it, then push the talk button. I was taught that by the manufacturer and it is extremely accurate. In my opinion, using a dummy load when testing a radio is pointless because you don’t use a dummy load to talk. The power and swr can change drastically with each antenna. Depending on what antenna I use, I can get up to 18 watts out of my h8 with an swr of 1:1. I realize people use the dummy load to find the true power of the radio, but it still don’t make sense.

      I can hit my repeater 29 miles away, but it's also 400 ft above ground level. It's easy to hit a strong tower. This also was my very first video. I urge you to watch my newer ones that has a lot more experience.

    For all you people who have been testing radios while seated in a metal car, this is how it should be done. Not only is the roof of the car blocking signals, your car electronics, radio, gps, heater, air conditioning, electric windows, back up camera all create electronic noise. @@ohtaren8052 I will do a video with all of these antennas on two separate meters. The only odd thing is some of them are the factory "extended range" antennas that come with some radios and they are for 136/440. Take that Baofeng for example, everyone on the planet has the $20 UV 5R, and that's where that particular antenna came from. It works surprisingly well, even though it reads high 2's on a meter with GMRS channels (mainly 15-30 readings). I just got the Abbree $8 15" antenna in (orange), which is tuned for GMRS, and it actually reads a 1.1, which blew me away. Even the Nagoya 771g's read 1.4 and up. The only thing I have done with it (Abbree) is "kerchunk" the repeater that's 20 miles away on a commercial tower. The signal back is much stronger than the Smiley 5/8 or the 771g. I believe it will be the best "15" extended range antenna I have so far. Can't wait to find out.

    Arnt they broadcasting units illegal? They basically make the band un-useable

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      I was transmitting on GMRS 7, way out in the country, and asked if anyone was using the freq before each location test. I see how it would seem like they would be "in the wrong", but it actually does not interfere with anyones transmissions. If you for example were out there and tried to talk to a friend on that same channel, it would pick up your transmission and repeat it back over that same freq. I'm sure most people who didn't know what it was would be very confused, but it doesn't interfere. Plus it was a Saturday afternoon in a sleepy little one horse town. It is mainly used for camping or hiking purposes to extend your normal talking range to "double" the distance. If you put that little repeater between you and another camp, it would simply receive it and broadcast it that much farther from that point. Hope that didn't get too over-explained. It's a simple "Simplex Repeater". But, it is completely wrong to set it to a normal repeater channel like 15-22. That would definitely make people angry! I used 7 because it's just a normal FRS/GMRS freq that no one uses.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      you have to have a GRMS license to operate on the GRMS frequencies at those wattages. GMRS and FRS are the same frequencies, without the repeater channels, but with different wattage. If you go to a camping store and buy a two pack of little walkie talkie's, chances are they are FRS frequencies. FRS and GMRS frequencies are the same in most cases, but different wattages used. You do not need a license for FRS to transmit at .5W, but you do need a license for GMRS to transmit 5W on that same frequency.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  5 місяців тому

      Baofeng has a wide range of radios, and for the most part they are decent. TIDradio makes a better radio, with more features, for just a little more in cost. All of the low cost radios will have the pros and cons, and I just like TIDradio more than Baofeng. I have the UV-5G, UV-5G Pro and the GM-5RH. They are all good, but the H3 receives air band, and also displays the frequency and the channel name. It's easier to memorize the frequencies if you are constantly looking at them, along with the channel name. Baofeng does not do that.

  • @NickFrom1228
    @NickFrom1228 7 місяців тому +1

    The thing about testing is consistency and controlling variables. This is a good example of controlling variables and producing usable results. There are a plethora of variables that can affect the range but the reason this video is valuable is because antennas are likely the number one thing to consider. You can get a mediocre radio with a good antenna and do well. Reverse that and not so much. What better radios typically bring you are features, not range, though that is not a rule.
    Once you have a radio and a good antenna what you need to become proficient with is:
    1. Utilizing whatever useful aspects are in your area
    a. Repeaters. Many repeaters have much more power than even mobile GMRS and they employ item b below.
    b. Terrain. GMRS and all other UHF as well as VHF are line of sight due to their high frequency. This makes foliage, buildings, hills whatever an issue. Therefore, elevation is king because it gets you line of sight and will help avoid many of the obstructions.
    2. Knowing your radio and what it takes to make a contact. Knowing that moving your position even a few feet might make a difference. Knowing that cars are semi faraday cages is good to remember (you can mount a good mobile antenna on your cars roof and hook your HT to it and do quite well). Antenna questions: I've been looking at options for vehicle antennas. In my searching, I've come across some that state "no ground plane". Does this mean ground plane not included or ground plane not required?
    Question 2 I'll preface with the old "there are no stupid questions" adage. Please understand that I come from a CB/trucking background. Is it beneficial or even possible to run dual matching antennas? I know it's not the best coax, but a lot of trucks now come factory pre-wired with a split coax with so-239 ends intended for dual CB antennas. Can that be used to run dual 70cm antennas?
    If it sounds too hair-brained and actually is a stupid question, assume I'm asking for a friend. 😂

    Thanks for the content. Was the radio you were calling to outdoors? Elevated? I bought a couple of Wouxun KG-UV9GXs to have ecomm capabilities with my daughter who lives about two miles away as the crow flies in a suburban environment. Mostly single and two story homes between us. Stock rubber duck antennas did not work. Bought the Smiley 1/4 and 5/8 wave aftermarket antennas from Better Safe Radio. They work a bit better. But no getting clear audio or the distances you are.
    What are you thoughts? I was thinking of trying a mag mount set up with a 239 to sma converter to use the HT.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому +1

      Suburban areas are always tough for one. I can tell you from experience that the radio you have will definitely make that trip, and the problem is your antenna. Go on Amazon and type in Midland Mobile 32" GMRS. I would attach the link but I'm on my cell. I just put one on my truck and I feel like I can hear Jupiter compared to the Midland Ghost antenna. It's $50, but it totally changed my mobile. You can put it at your house, and still run a jumper to the radio connection. The only downfall is you are anchored to wherever your antenna is. Don't want to run coax all over the house! The test I did was as flat as I could get it, no obstruction except for the 7 and 8 mile stretch. There was a small town between me and the repeater. Your radio surely has the power, and a mobile (mounted) antenna will work well. Oh, on UA-cam, search Ed Fong GMRS antenna. Some people are mounting them inside there house, at the window sill and talking miles!

  • @airshotsphotoco

    Inaccurate because the static could be on the transmit or receive side and you would not know which. It could even be on both. Also antennas MUST be held vertical.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      True, they must be vertical and I didn't realize it until I was editing. This is a basic example of normal antennas, and "normal" radios. Plus. Everyone's area will have different results, especially with other areas weather and electronic interference. Someone has already brought up the "vertical" issue, but all I can do from this point is correct it in the future. The base radio was a TID H8 with a Nagoya 771g, so that was a good setup. The repeater was a basic simplex repeater which simply broadcasted the same transmission back. I do understand there could be interference on the return though.

      A TIDradio H8 Gmrs is a solid radio for beginners. It displays both the channel name and frequency, which helps you "memorize" the channels. Plus UT has Bluetooth programming, which is very fast and works well. I like it. The new TIDradio H3 Gmrs is backorder, and it has even more features, like listening to airports and pilots talking (AM Air band). Both are good for beginners. The next step up would probably be the Wouxun KG-935g at $149 and the KG-935g Plus at $169-$179 or so. The H8 and H3 are simplified and I've learned a lot with them.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      I will do one. It's extemely simple, but the main challenge is getting the modulation correct before you drive off into the distance! Just to see a quick video, type it in UA-cam, and there is about a 3 min video where you see a radio and the sure com on a brown table. That guy explains it in less than a minute! Otherwise, I will get one uploaded this week! (I just uploaded Part 2 of this antenna testing video with new antennas. Check it out also!)

      TIDradio H8 with a Nagoya 771G, approximately same hieght as me, 5' off ground. In reality I can hit my local repeater 19 miles away (Repeater channel 23) with all of the antennas, except the 701g. That antenna is on a commercial tower though....

    So glad you did this video to answer the range questions.
    I want to do the same experiments with my radios but don’t understand the need for the two radios in your testing?
    I’m under the impression that the Surecom records your transmission and then sends it right back out to same radio.
    Is the second radio needed at the location of the Surecom?

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому +1

      Yes. The second radio (at home or wherever you set it up at) uses the standard programming cable to plug into the repeater. The second radio is the receiver and transmitter for the repeater. The repeater does not have the ability to receive and transmit with being connected to an actual radio. The "repeater radio" had a 771G on it, just to make sure it was able to receive and transmit at its best potential. But, I have new and possibly better antennas I will be doing shortly.

    I would do the same test... but also add in a "Tiger Tail" or "Rat Tail" to each antenna. Its just a Counterpoise ground for an HT radio. You just need one, depending on how the bottom of the connector is fashioned. They have the ability to extend you clarity ... a lot more.
    You all ready know each of these ant capabilities out around 7 miles... go back out to the same spot around the same time of day... and redue the test with a counterpoise tail... off... and then on.
    And try and keep the antenna pointed upright... that does make a difference.
    As for other antennas I might add.... A diamond brrand... they are just a little bit more at around $24 but are very good at longer distances.
    Had a question as well, what type of antenna are using at home on the "repeater", and how high is it, type/length of coax..? Thanks.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      You are right, but I was wanting to keep it as simple as possible. I found a site that tells the length based on freq, which appears GMRS needs to be 6". Is that what you have found? I will do a. tail on the next video. I am going to run through some trees on the next one, that way it's a little more realistic. I wasn't using my base at home as the repeater. That is a 35' tall Tram, and wouldn't be accurate for normal simplex communication. I used a TIDradio H8 with a Nagoya 771G as the "base". Thanks so much for all that info! I will definitely use the advice on the next vid! I will also order a Diamond this week! Check out the Part 2 I just uploaded!

      Hey bud, I have one more question about the tails. On yours, (which radio are you using), and did you attach it to the belt clip screw or did you put it at the base of the antenna and then screw the antenna back on top of it to secure it in place?

      @@thomaspolley4977 I will be doing another "real world" test soon. This one was just to see how far they would go on basically flat land. I know they go farther because I can hit a repeater 19 miles away and be clear. But, that repeater antenna is on a commercial tower, so the height definitely helps. These little tests I'm doing here have the radios at about 5' high, like a normal person would hold.

      I've been putting together a little communication system for my family. I installed a retevis rt97s Repeater and put their fiberglass antenna on a 10 foot stick of conduit on my roof. My kids were complaining about the length of the stock antenna on their radios, and they had high SWR on GMRS, so i replaced them with the 701g.
      Repeater performance has been underwhelming. I'm doing good if I can get into the repeater 2 miles away on an HT. It's semi rural kansas, about as flat as you can get. After watching your review, I'm going to pick up a few 771Gs just to have.

    • @FirstUnitedTactical
      @FirstUnitedTactical  7 місяців тому

      @thomaspolley4977 that's odd you can't hit that repeater. I can go through minor woods and some city to hit our repeater 20 miles away, but it's also on a commercial tower. Did you get the short 440 Signal Stick? How are you testing your SWRs on a HT? You won't ever get a true signal, but I've found that touching the 259 base will allow your body to act as a ground, therefore give you a more positive reading. I've found that if the antenna is just connected, the readings will be through the roof. Maybe you have the Surecom with the ground plate attachment?

      @RedeemedPrepper the dual band is the issue I believe. USPS says mine will arrive tomorrow and I will reach back out to ya with results. I'm not a fan of the H3. I can hit a repeater 9 miles from me with everything else, except the H3. It shows 4.5W on the meter, and 1.29 with a 771G, but for some reason it won't make it.
